New to the climber world and put it to use this hunting season. kzfaq.infoUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs I felt safe while climbing up and down a tree. It did take some time getting used to climbing and descending the tree. Once I figured it out I was comfortable going in climbing a tree knowing I was going to be up a tree quickly and most importantly quite not scaring every deer out of my area. I am 6’2” and 240 lbs, fit and comfort were great. I bow hunt and found no issues hunting from it. It is a little bulky to carry in and out of the woods vs some of the smaller open front climbers but I thought it was worth the bulk/weight due to ease of climbing (using the rail to sit on) and comfort for long sits.

Good video! Shows good detail of everything! One thing I also do is I have about 10" peice of paracord tied around the top of the stand just above the batwing, then I use the lone wolf quick hook attach to the tree and hang the stand with the paracord on. This allows for your hands to be free so you don't have to hold the stand with one hand and try to buckle the strap with the other. After I get it hung I then loosen the hook and move it up the tree and hang my pack on it. Great video! Keep em coming!

Great info. Thanks for making this video. Preparing to get into deer hunting for next season and can say I've learned a lot from you. Your method of setting up the tree stand is what I plan on using, albeit at a much slower pace. The tips you give such as which side the initial step should be facing for easiest transition to the stand for both three and four stick setups is huge. Watched a video from the manufacturer of that stand and it was never mentioned. Also noticed some issues with how the guy there setup, such as lineman's rope below him as he ascended the tree at times, as well as below the stand when he was setting it. Every aspect of your videos are educational and safe. Thanks for what you do. Happy hunting!

Great video, Jason. I have a Millenium M100u stand and Ameristep aluminum rapidrails...wicked comfortable stand, but not quite as "mobile" of a setup as the lone wolf rig you're running. I think I'll switch over! I'm going to start with the sticks, then eventually try the stand. I'm fairly comfortable about up to a mile depending on terrain, but not more than that. The packs I've run are the biggest downfall-the EXO system looks amazing. I've also considered Outdoorsman, and Stone Glacier.

If you ate not packing deer out on your back at the same time you are packing stand and sticks I'd also recommend checking out the kuiu 1850 icon pro with out the frame just the suspension system (hipbelt and shoulder straps and internal stays). Love how fast I can strap the sticks and stand to the compression straps on that pack and it is so comfortable with the sticks and stand on it. Alos the price or about 250 bucks is a steal for the quality of pack you get plus the whole pack and suspension weighs like 2.5 pounds or something

I bought 3 extras when they stopped and am on my last one. So in a year or 2 I will have to get a new more modern harness make my own.

Piggy backing or in place of craig's suggestion below: Tie your tether above where you'll hang your stand and hang your stand from it. Now, both your hands are free to MORE EASILY tie/set your stand. After you're finished, unhook your stand and attach your harness to your tether and continue. You tie your tether anyway after you step on to the stand, so it's not an additional step.

Love your videos. Very informative and easy to follow. What do you recommend for climbing sticks for a novice hunter? I’m a big guy (6’2, 230lbs). I currently have the stepladder kit but I feel a bit like it’s too narrow for my liking when I’m standing on them. I can’t tell yet if that’s because I’m too big and clumsy or if it’s just because I’m too new to it. I’m gonna try again this week when I make your custom lineman’s belt with the parts I ordered off Amazon. Appreciate your insight.

Hey Jason, I appreciate everything you do here on YT, I think I would use the safety harness strap or rope all the way up also because if a step or something breaks I don’t think the lineman belt will prevent a fall down the tree, it will keep you close to the tree but your still going down I believe? Thanks again you have made my mind up on which sticks and stand to purchase 💪
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow Жыл бұрын
The lineman belt would hook on the sticks on the tree and stop you quick. Had it happen twice. That's better than hitting the round but still not fun. And if you have a way to run a lifeline and want to take the time it's definitely safer. But you still want the lineman belt to hang sticks and stands hands free.

Jason... Just found your videos and really appreciate them. You bring out some good points that are re-grounding my hunting. A bit frustrated with the last two years of deer hunting. Question. Do you not hang your stand above your top step? Why not? Don't you loose some height?
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you are enjoying the vids. I do hang my stand above my top step. Usually about a foot or so above. You don't want it to high or you will kick the stand out trying to get into it. But in videos I show that the stand is level or below the top step on purpose. 2 reasons. 1 is that it is the safest way and I know not everyone is wearing a lineman belt. Stepping into and out of the stand is where most people fall. 2. Is because people will ripp me up in the comments if I show that I put the platform up above the step for reason 1. KZfaq can be a brutal place and you would be amazed at the comments people make when you don't do something by the book!

I dont use the bottom strap and never have. But it's great lone wolf gives you the second strap to use if you want. I'm always connected with a lineman belt or the safety line so I'm not worried or feel I need the second strap. But it definitely cant hurt to use it.

Your video made me buy a assault 2 package with everything and i made the linesman belt like you have and i love it! Just wish there was a easy way to carry it with my pack or even by itself. The padded shoulder straps i bought extra still suck and theres no chest strap and a waist belt would be nice also but for now a chest strap would really save the shoulders especially where i live in Virginia. Very hilly so i need all the support i can get lol. Any ideas on how to make it easier on the shoulders?

Great questions! When I'm in stand I just hang my lineman belt on a branch or clip it to my pack. I have never used the bottom stand strap. Just never saw the need and all my other stands only ever had one so I figured it was just extra security if wanted. That was 20 years ago and I still have never used it. Not that you should not use it. Bit me personally I'm just fine without it. Less to carry and faster set up and take down with out it.

What is the secondary belt called that you used to go around the branches as you disconnected the linemans belt? I have always been a climber user but have found myself interested in these packable lock ons. You can hang them in any tree as the climber i dont feel safe in hard wood trees and have lost bottom platforms before.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 5 жыл бұрын
The second belt is my safety line. It is connected to my harness between my shoulder blades and once I'm in the stand I use that to keep me safe. The lineman belt is to keep me safe going up and down the tree. The safety line keeps me safe when in stand. All safety harnesses come with the safety line. The reasons you mentioned is why I only use lock on stands and no climbers. Finding a climber compatible tree inside of tradbow range is often hard to do. The lock on will let me hunt any tree.

One of the few videos that show setting up the tree stand and carrying a pack. In your opinion, is it better to pull up the pack or the tree stand from the ground? I hunt with a rifle in the gun season, wonder about the weight of pulling up the pack and the rifle at the same time. your thoughts?
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 2 жыл бұрын
I have never hunted with a rife from a tree stand. I've only killed one big game animal with a gun. It was a doe last year I stalked with my open sight 45/70 lever gun and shot her at 25 yards. So im not the best advise on that. But if I were to gun hunt from a stand I would probably pull the gun up on a second line if it was scoped. If it was open sighted like my lever gun I'd pull it up on same line as my pack I think. Again I say that from thought, not experience. When bow hunting my pull up line has 2 loops in the bottom. One on the bottom and one loop a foot up the line. I loop thw bottom loop over my top bow limb and connect my pack with a carabiner to the top loop. So I can pull my longbow and pack up at the same time. I also lower them the same way. My tree stand is on my back as I climb.

Then disconnect tether and go doen.

Great ideas and appreciate you mentioning them here as it gives people choices! The xop sticks are great and the are a couple inches longer. But the have some cons as well. Attaching the other sticks to you to haul up is good as long as you follow a couple rules. 1 leave the rope long enough to get up on your first stick and have your linemans belt set correctly. If you have the sticks hanging vertically right below you or on your belt and you fall from that first stick you will most likely land a stick that is vertical and get pretty badly injured. Most climbing stick falls are at the first stick as people stretch trying to get on it. Follow those precautions and you will be all set! Again thanks for the great comment!

I have learned a lot from this video, but it seems this could definitely be an issue.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 жыл бұрын
Great point. You could always take the carabiners to quiet them. But I personally do not like the tape on them. But I make a huge effort in the woods to not let those carabiners clank on anything as I'm climbing up. That climb up is the only time I'm concerned with the carabiner and keeping it quiet. On the way down and out I make a ton of noise as I'm not coming back to that spot for a few weeks if at all that season. But if you really want to make sure they are quiet use hockey stick tape or golf grip and it will make them quiet. Heck even duct tape works perfect.

Have had does and button bucks come up and sniff them but by the time they got that close to those they already were smelling my tree sticks hanging on the tree. Im not a big fan of camo because it doesn't work, everyone uses it, and i dont like how the camo you wear today is looked at like a status symbol like gucci, etc. Its just my personal opinion and honestly I dont like the image that a big majority of hunters portray and act like today. again just my opinion. I have killed more animals in a pair of khaki pants and flannel shirt than i can count. Yes I cut the wire off the ropeman #1. dont need it, just use your thumb on the cam lever. its faster, easier and safer than using the little cable.

Hi Jason. Really informative and helpful video for us beginning bow hunters interested in using sticks and a tree stand, many thanks. I have a couple of questions if i may. a) i notice you only used 1 strap to secure your tree stand, on the top versa button. My Lone Wolf (as does yours i'm assuming) has 2 buttons and came with 2 straps. Just wondering, have you ever used both straps and if not why, and if so, why did you decide to go to only 1? I will assume it's safe with just 1 strap? b) could a person climb 1 step higher (stand on the top 2 steps) on the third stick and thus hang the stand that foot and a half higher up the tree? What's the reason you put your stand level with the middle step rather than at the top step height? Thanking you in advance Jason, hoping you find my post and questions. Continue to stay and hunt safe and i look forward to more superb videos. P.S. I can't believe i haven't already subscribed to your channel. Going to do so right now. Peace.

Excellent questions! I only use one strap as the bottom strap is not load bearing. The bottom strap is just to prevent the stand from kicking out sideways as you climb in and out. Setting the second strap takes quite a bit of time. You have to hang the stand with the first strap and get it set nice and tight and cammed in the add the second strap after that. Otherwise the stand will not sit tight to the tree and although safe in that situation because of the second strap it will pop and creek and make noise as you move in the stand if you didn't set it correctly with just the first strap. So for me I just use the top strap and make sure the stand is cam set tight and good. Reason you don't want to put your platform much higher than you top step is the angle you need to step into your stand. You do not want to step up into a stand with too much angle or bend in your knee. That causes kick out of the platform and also if something is gonna go wrong with the stand you ate already committed and can't back out. Where as stepping down on level to the stand you can still have all of your weight on the step and gradually apply weight and pressure to the platform making sure everything is safe and solid.

Not crazy at all! Matter of fact that is how many people do it. The stand haul line should be a bigger 6mm or 7mm rope as the stand can be heavy to lift and might snag some branches. Run 2 haul lines. One off one side with your bow and pack and one on the other side with the stand. If you want to run just one line put a hook on the end so you can lower the hook and catch the stand, bring it up and hang it, then lower the hook to grab your bow.
