P.J. Reilly covers eight basic safety tips to consider when using a climbing tree stand. (Yes, we know he only climbed about 10 feet up the tree. That was for video purposes, so we could film from the ground.)

This video should be reviewed every year by those who use climbing tree stands. I use mine a lot and had scenarios where “they only happen to the other guy.” The 2 scariest for me was where the seat fell out from underneath me and when climbing down the platform slipped out from both feet. Both times the harness was instrumental in keeping me safe. My lesson when the platform slipped out was not to adjust the tether so long that you don’t have to fight trying to bring the platform back up. In my case, the teeth kept biting into the trunk. It took awhile to maneuver the platform back to my feet. If you don’t believe it can’t happen to you try going up without a harness. Don’t look to me for sympathy.

Every year, I look for tree climbing videos. Just to remind myself to take my time and be as safe as possible. Thank You for sharing and reminding us. I read a comment that said, "This video should be reviewed every year by those that tree climb". I agree 100%!! Make sure you tell someone where you're going, what time you're going in and what time you should be coming out. Even let them know you made up and down the tree. I know a lot of guys that hunt by themselves some times, and that's what they do. The stories of people falling are sad, but real! I'm about to start my season in a couple of weeks. I'll be back again, right here, next year. God Bless.

Treestand Wingman controlled descent device. Pretty affordable, adjustable for weight and reusable. You fall out of your stand, any stand, and it safely lowers you to the ground. I test mine every year. Worth every single penny because I KNOW I’m safe.

I do rope access work in my profession and safety is the number one priority. At times I have become too comfortable in working in elevated positions and have foolishly neglected some safety protocols while using a Lone Wolf hand climber. One, being attached to the tree during the ascent. My main reasoning is that it takes a little more time and can make unwanted unnatural sounds each time you loosen the tree strap. But IF I were to suffer a crippling or lethal fall, then hindsight would be the wisdom that'd beat me up. Thanks for the sobering reminder. I'm going to take the extra time and risk the possible noise factor.

Soooooo many years I have climbed trees with a self climber. Never had a safety harness. Now that I know what’s out there for safety, I always climb with this harness.

very informative as i'm new to climbing tree stands. The only safety thing you missed which is critical would be the foot harness if you do lose the bottom. its very important to have ,most come with the strap now. So for those who don't know, its a strap that connects to your harness, and allows you to take the pressure off of your legs by making a loop and allows you to stand while you find a solution or wait for help. also a Vietnam veteran friend recommended a whistle as the sound travels for 7+ miles.

I lost my bottom to my climber about 20ft in the air. So I had to wrap my legs around the pine tree and slid down like you would a pole. Only injury was on my head when the top fell on top of me when my feet hit the ground. My hands stung for a few but it was better than broken legs.

I'm definitely one of those that get dizzy with a higher I get unfortunately a lot of my hunts stay to the ground , but I have been very successful and learned a lot through The Years doing this method.

Nicely done PJ. Been away for 3 years and thought I would review. I had forgotten the basics. My new stand was broken (from the factory with improper welds in the framework and I didn't inspect it before use like I should have). Just because it's new doesn't mean it ready to go. Because I was doing it by the book, I still survived. These stands aren't toys or gimmicks, they're tools that if used properly will result with venison on the table. Done badly, they can help get you killed or hurt. I agree with what you said. With the right sized tree, you generally won't have problems or major ones. No short cuts and don't hurry. Do it by the book and you can come home at the end of the day. Thanks! O, by the way, get their catalog. You wouldn't believe the archery equipment they carry.

Been using all styles of tree stand for over40 yrs, Yes I prefer my climber. You should always pay close attention to the condition of tree, Don't climb trees with broken branches, dead limbs or dead fall trees close by the one you want to use. Great video!

I really like seeing you putting this out, but would like to see the next step - actually hanging from the tree in a traditional harness and trying to rescue yourself. I'm a fan of a mountain climbing harness and use one in my climber.

Good video. Instead of the cam strap around the tree, I prefer a lifeline with a prusik hitch. Makes it sooooo much easier to climb and descend. $29 at Bass Pro.

Good idea to carry cell phone and also an extra screw in step in case you did fall out of your stand.This would at least allow you to take the pressure off your legs from just dangling until you can get help

Thank you for providing some great advice. However, you need to ad content about how dangerous Suspension Trauma is and what you can do to prevent dying from Suspension Trauma. The full body harness must have Suspension Trauma relief foot straps. The hunter must practice using these. After falling out of a treestand, the hunter must have a means of getting back into the stand or getting back down to the ground

I was thinking the same thing. I’m not a stand hunter, but I’m considering it. I wonder how difficult it would be to rig up your harness to a length of line so that in the event you fall, you can repel down.

The relief foot straps is how I get back to the ground.

Relief foot straps are usually when there'd nothing to grab onto or relive pressure although great to have if you do this properly you would be able to grab your stand and pull yourself up.

The buckle of the tree strap is supposed to be on the side of the tree not in front of you, which could result in the strap unthreading in the case of a fall.

Use stabilizer straps on the climber and you won’t have to worry about the bottom or top section disengaging!

You have a couple options. Climb back into the stand, which should be within reach. Or call for help. There are other self-rescue options suggested, but I've never tried them, so I can't verify their validity.

@@LancasterArcherySupply My harness, although its a cheapo Game Winner, comes with a tucked away strap that has a loop on the end and acts as a foot hold to help you get back in order.

You forgot to strap the top section of the climber to the tree once you have it in your hunting position ensuring the teeth do not lose contact with the tree - very important.

Buy a buckshot Equalizer climbing tree stand with the leveling cranks on the upper and lower section , nothing safer , you can just this while in the tree safe , i bought it last year and love it .Why not talk about that ,i bet you know about it

Hello LAS. What was 5 years ago to you seems like only about 2 minutes to me. Got a question. The one that must never be asked. IF you fall out of your stand, and you're swinging in the wind....then what? How would you go about getting down safely. Let us assume no hunting buddy and no cell service. Your blood pressure begins to rise after 20 minutes. What is your solution? Checking here and other vids I see the presenter doesn't often answer back. I make my question to anyone reading. It is NOT a trick question. What is your plan?

Well……if you fall “out of your stand” and you are properly wearing your full body harness, one option is to climb back into your stand. If that’s not an option, you can pull out your self rescue foot strap which enables you to descend safely.

Ok...this is a climber and it's not an option to climb back in. What is a self rescue footstrap? Did a search on here but I did not find it. If you're talking about the little gizmo to step in to take the weight off your thighs temporarily...well it;s not a get down kinda rescue device. Fact is that there is NO get down device that I'm aware of. It's the dirtiest little secret in the treestand industry. I'm working on a way using a 'figure 8' hitch carabiner, of sorts. Saddle hunters use it. With zero way to get down except dropping like a rock If you way up in a tree and the unthinkable happens you're either gonna die or live real hurt. This has to be addressed by the safe hunter. In Alabama recently we have had years when the only reported hunting deaths were the result of climbing accidents. @@LancasterArcherySupply

@@OvGraphics Between your safety harness and your foot strap, you absolutely can descend the tree. You attach your foot strap and "stand up" in it to take the pressure off your harness strap. Lower the harness strap and sit back down so that you hang from it, which takes the pressure off your foot strap. Now lower your foot strap and repeat until you are back on the ground.

Sounds like you're onto something. So there is such a thing as a rescue strap? Would you be kind enough to send me a link or point me in the direction of one? I assume we're not talking about the relief strap that is hooked to the harness. Looking forward to hearing back. @@LancasterArcherySupply

The one thing i have YET to see is how sturdy these summit climbers are. I use a Buckshot Bigshot and have used it for YEARS, it's super sturdy, you can lean to either side and it will not lose it's grip... this climber, while i've heard good things about them and am considering getting one, it does not look very sturdy? are there any videos out there about the security of these climbers compared to other brands? I want to know when Im in a tree climber than im secure and that thing isn't going ANYWHERE!

@@beantown_billy2405 I'm hip. I own one of those and getting in and out is the unsolved issue of owning one. And I'm an arthritic 72 year old who seems to think he's 25. Stay safe in that thing.
