Keep in mind that some walkmans have screws on the back that you have to unscrew first! The right way to open up a Walkman to replace the belt and lubricate the mechanism.

Always be patient and take your time while opening your Walkman, and before you do. Try to locate the possible screws on the back and the tabs in the cassette bay. I hope this video helps!

Wish I found this earlier, but it still feels like these things aren't designed to be serviced - period. I used a flathead and pushed them all back (the side one down) and while it did unclip the back shell, it did a number on the small tabs and left them covered in war scars. Nothing structural I hope but if worst comes to pass then they may need replacing eventually. Other than that great vid, applies to basically everything as you say and this is a must-see for anyone
@galacticboy200923 күн бұрын
I was never able to make the one on the left side unclip, no matter what I did. I sat and pushed on it for hours at work, nothing would make it unclip, so I eventually just pried that corner open. The area of that clip is absolutely mangled inside, but the unit still works.

OMG! This so helped me out when i had to open up my EX-12 model. pretty much opens in the exact same spots. what was funny that once i popped it open and put the belt back on (so glad it didn't snap or stretch out beyond the point of it being good), but i saw EX-10 printed on the circuit board inside it. my only recommendation is that make sure the flathead is the right size to pop it open. the one i used was just a few mm big, but it worked and got the job done.

There was only 1 belt. The path it took I think is in an L shape. I ended up throwing it out. Whatever issue it had, it got way worse and died. Gonna guess it was an issue with the motor. Because I switched belts and it still wasn't playing right. Figured it was time to give it up. Which is sad. I only had it for maybe 4 years, and who knows how much play it got before me. But I found mine in a thrift store for 50 cents.

Techmoan gave me the idea to try to service my old Walkman and you saved me with this video about the little tabs. I broke off the smallest of the three on my MX-122 but no real harm done I think. As expected, the belt is all weak so I'll be ordering a replacement.

Sony Walkmans are definitely made to be easily serviceable. Their black Walkmans are definitely worth repairing because they have no crappy battery saving tech which somehow reduced the amp quality. They tend to sound really good compared to late models. That Aiwa you have also worth saving. They sounded great and the heads are of higher quality compared to Sony.

That Aiwa at the end is actually kind of easy to open. There are tiny screws around it, and you also need to pull away the battery plastic cover. The problem is that in order to replace the belt you need to desolder the board

I've had lots of Sony electronics since 1968, reel-to-reel tape, cassette, CD, radio and TV... all still working. I played cassettes at home and only used my 1980s Walkman for radio commentary at race tracks. It is now 2023 and out of curiosity I tried the cassette player for the first time and it wasn't working. I found your video and felt confident to open up the Walkman. The belt was off and jammed under a pulley wheel so it was a very simple fix. Thank you for your superb video.

That is a nice video. I found an old walkman from my father and when i put bateries in and a casette i can see that the reading thinggi goes down and i can hear that something is moving inside but the two knobs to move the kasette itself do not rotate so i supose some gears are ill aligned. Im by no means someone that fixes these types of things. But with this i want to give it a try becaue it seems like it is not an difficult issue to fix if my theory is right

This is typical of my luck, I found my old Sony WM-B10, The belt has perished and needs replacing but there's none of these clips in mine! I forgot to check the volume when I tried it, Fitted new AA's and stuck a cassette in, Pressed play and almost shattered my eardrums!, It was on at full belt!, It only rand for a few seconds though!! Luckily i've a yellow Sony WM-B52 Sports that was with it, This one plays perfectly!! 👍

If the walkman is too slow, what would you recommend I do?
@myprofilenameis4 жыл бұрын
Usually it's the belt that needs to be replaced. However if the belt seems fine you could try messing around with the potentiometer.

I just replaced the belt of my Sony WM-2051 but now it plays too slow. Was it the wrong belt?
@myprofilenameisАй бұрын
It could be the belt is too tight or too thick, but you could also see if adjusting the potentiometer for the speed helps. I think the potentiometer is located next to the dc jack on the board looking at pictures online.

I can't get this to work for love nor money for my WM-116. How much force should I apply. Do you push down or pull up the little tabs 😭
@stevenwilson77522 жыл бұрын
Push the tabs towards the battery compartment side, the 2 bigger ones should stay but the smaller one pops back. I had to work a plastic plectrum opening tool around the seam to pry it open. Start prying at the corner next to DC in. You should hear lots of cracks as you work it free from the claws. WM-EX116 has the same service manual as WM-EX120 freeservicemanuals.info/en/servicemanuals/download/Sony/wm-ex120.pdf

Unfortunatley I only have one camera so that's why it was off camera (out of view) All I did was push with a screwdriver. It takes a bit of practice though but the case should just pop open. What model walkman do you have?
@mateuszmaciejewski8873 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, they made something belt driven which always means you will have to replace the belt at some point, and designed in the only way they could to prevent people from safely opening it knowing they didn't damage something, are screws that expansive?

With all my respect to Sony but, it's a stupid conception when it comes to open this walkman.
@DrunkHog3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's not ENTIRELY idiotic. The problem is that those plastic clips can break. But on bolts alone it's not enough. Bolt holes are drilled in plastic, they can break too. You need a combination of sorts. Also, the more complex it gets the more expensive it becomes.
@DrunkHog3 жыл бұрын

@@myprofilenameis Thank you. Will try to see if I can find something. I also have a Sony, but a slightly different model. The belt is still there, and still has SOME spinning capability to it, although it is a a bit stretched out. I got another weird problem. I press play, i hear the motor spinning but it is as fi there's a tape in there at its end, and the auto reverse (the equivalent to flipping the cassette over) kicks in and tries to spin it the other way around. When the system gives up on trying to spin, the pulleys spin for a a couple of revs before stopping. I'm hoping it's just the belt. AAAnyway, thanks for the vid.
@myprofilenameis3 жыл бұрын
@@DrunkHog That could have to do with the belt yes, but I would also recommend cleaning the pinch rollers and capstan. While you have the walkman open it might also be a nice idea to replace the old grease with new grease to make everything run smooth again.
@ramchickedy95709 ай бұрын
Compared to other older walkmans, this one shows how it started to go downhill with thrir quality in the early 90s. This one is technically serviceable, if you know how the locks work - I don't know. I'm unable to get it open it, without breaking it. 10 years later (+/- 2000) Sony is just planned obsolescence garbage.
