Quick Note for people doing the belt change on these model walkmans. If you are still noticing the speed is too slow or too fast there is a white screw adjustment next to the motor. Slightly turn that while playing a tape to get the speed just right. I replaced my belt and still noticed it was playing a little slow still so I turned that pot slightly while listening to the same song on my PC and now it's working great!

I have Sony Walkman wm-ex102 cassette player which was a gift from my grandfather. I used it for quiet some time in 90s. Recently I needed to play an old tape that has my grandmother's poems and I pressed few buttons to rewind/fast forward and it worked. As soon as hit play, tape wouldn't move. I figured it either got ripped or slipped. It was the latter. I found your video and opened the player and corrected the issue. Thank You!

99% sure this is the exact model of portable cassette player I lost when I was a kid. I only had it for about 2 months and it just disappeared, never to be seen again. We tossed the whole house and our cars looking for it. I distinctly remember that style of auto-reverse switch and that no other portable in my childhood had anything like it. I also remember the mega-bass switch which did nearly nothing for sound so I ignored it. Anyway nice to see this thing again.

I love my WM-FX33 😊 That was my “teen” model, and I missed it, so I bought mine brand new off eBay still sealed in packaging since 1990.. so beautiful. But yes, I still needed to swap the belt. Only $6! ❤

Something i saw in other videos, its that they use white lithium grease (applied with a small stick or an ear swab), so it helps against overheating gears. Regards from Madrid and thank you again!

Was considering picking up a walkman from eBay, and wanted to get an idea of how hard it would be to replace the belts. Didn't look too complicated, so now I got a WM-FX45 + new belt on the way. One thing though. When replacing the belts, it's always a good idea to clean the pulleys with a q-tip drenched in alcohol. This removes the rubber residue left by belts that have gone sticky, or rubber dust from belts that dried out. Always a good idea to do some maintenance while you're in there anyway.

I listened to music for about half an hour and suddenly it stopped and even though I changed side it wouldnt start again. I didn’t know what to do so I searched up this tutorial and I could thankfully repair it without accidentally breaking something. Turns out that I had the exact same problem. I was doing this for a friend with this same unit. I knew how to change belts but i needed this video for reference on how the belt needed to be installed. Thanks for this. I was so confused about the 2 capstans. Why are there 2 when it only plays in one direction?

With my model WM-FX443 there is a circuit board in the way, but I found a video on how to unscrew it, gently unclip and release the 2 ribbon cables and lift the board out. The video is for a WM-FX 271 but the principle is the same.

i have an old model sony that hs been infixed by me for a few years now and it does have a new belt but this video just inspired me to work on it again, wish me luck.

In this video you seem to repeatedly call the take-up and supply sprockets (or pulleys) “heads.” You did later redeem yourself by referring to the actual heads as “heads.” Good job on the repair. I wish all decks were that easy to replace the belts.

The belt that went off the track may be good. Instead of replacing the belt , you could have tried the old belt and see if it works bro.

19 Feb 2023. Thank you for the belt change information and video. My wonderful WM-AF42/BF42 purchased in 1989 has quit. It looks very similar to your model. Neither tape nor radio function. Would the belt size be the same as the one in your video? No sign of life either from the radio now. External power and/or new batteries have no effect. It’s lifeless. Just wondering if you might have pointers? Thank you.
