I had no idea I was taking a master class when I started this tutorial, wow! This is the most comprehensive waist alteration I've seen on KZfaq. I messed up the rear seam about 20 times, and almost threw my machine out the window, but I kept on. Lots of self doubt, broken threads and poor measurements, yet I couldn't stop. Towards the end it all started coming together and it felt like magic. My rear seam is nothing like the demo (how does she do that), and things are mostly straight, but I gave one of my old favorite shorts a new life, and I'm really proud of my work :) I learned so much, and it was great practice. Thanks so much for the help!

Thank you so much for the kind words! The rear seam magic is alllll about the iron, youre really heating and molding it into place before the final topstitching. Great job for sticking with it!!

When you're undoing the seam, instead of putting the pointy, sharp end inside the seam so slide down, use the end with the red blob on it. It's there specifically for this job - it prevents the point from slicing into the fabric and allows you to rip through several stitiches at a time. :)

Yes, that is what I just did... I used a thrifted pair that were too big in my butt and took the butt in with this method and it is pretty darn good. You need top stitching jean thread though bc it's thicker and will look best in the end. I am going out to buy some later so I can go back over the stitches I have in place for now.

Using a hammer to flatten those heavy seams before stitching will help with the sewing. Also I double my thread, lengthen the stitch length to better match the look of manufacturer stitches.

Using a hammer on my sewing machine will help with my frustration of not being capable of learning to sew haha. And I'm not an interent baby. I actually take classes, as in, drive the car even in snowstorms all the way downtown, park, walk 4 stories up to some warehouse space where actual classes with humans are taking place. You know, the ones you can touch? And I STILL can't learn sewing. I've mastered much more complicated classes like Belly Dancing. But sewing, nope

If you steam the thick seam you can take a pair of pliers and squeeeeeeeze it! I put a cloth on top of the fabric to reduce the impressions from the pliers. The hammer works but pliers apply pressure on the inside and the outside at the same time.

I am extremely impressed with your patience during the video. As someone else said “this really was a master class” in alterations. I like the way you showed everything you did. You didn’t start something and then stop the video and show the results. Where there was a small area that didn’t match exactly but you showed how to correct it and everyone learned that we can all make little mistakes but we can fix them too. In sewing, I’ve found that patience is one of the biggest asset to have in learning to see. I have been sewing since I was in 7th grade when you had to take Home Economics and learned to see. I was anxious to learn because my mother made all our dresses for my sister and I when we were small. Yes I’m old enough to have worn dresses made of chicken feed sacks and they were beautiful. My mother was an excellent seamstress and made not only our clothes but her own as well. Never change how you do your video’s because they are the best I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. ❤😘😘

I am so glad to see this. I thought I would have to recreate the flat fell seam, I never thought of serging the raw edge and then just imitating the look of a flat fell seam. My alteration chore will be easier than I thought! On some of my pants, a feature I really prefer is having two belt loops at the back waist, just to each side of the center seam. It holds the belt in place much better than just one center back belt loop, and is much easier to attach the belt loops without being on top of the center seam. If there is extra fabric from raising the hem, I will make an extra belt loop and sew the pair beside the center back seam.

Great tutorial! One thing I would mention about denim though...please pre-wash your jeans before having fitting and alterations done. New denim tends to shrink quite a bit on the first washing and altering before a wash and dry could leave you with a too small garment after it's eventually washed. I always tell clients to wash and dry the Jean's first to take care of the initial shrinkage.

I'm a diy beginner type sewer. Basics. I needed to take up my sons shorts. On mine, I would have just thrown a dart in somewhere and not worried about a wrinkle. But he's picky. THANK YOU!! I watched numerous videos until I found yours. By far the most patient and detailed instructing. My only issue is there is only one side to the waist band. The back fabric is the other waist band. (If that makes any sense.) But I'm guessing the same technique will work. Just a bit different. At worst, I'll buy him a new pair. Lol. But he has 5. Weight loss. Your wonderful❣️ I will check out other videos too.

here's a tip on how to correctly use the seam ripper with the red ball: "What is the red ball for on a seam ripper? The red ball is meant to go down towards the inside of your project. The ball protects the fabric and allows you to smoothly slide the seam ripper through the stitches. If you place the pointed edge down towards the fabric it can get caught and rip the fabric. The sharp edge should go up and away from the fabric. Jan 6, 2021

Very great tutorial! I’m inexperienced at tailoring and garment sewing but my jeans turned out very nice. I don’t have a serger and so I just used a zigzag stitch for that part. I also had to trim out some excess fabric in the waistbands at the end and flatten the seams down with a hammer, but that worked just fine. I didn’t have the high expectation of actually wearing these jeans afterwards due to the learning curve but am pleased to say I very much can wear them. They fit my waist perfectly now and they look darn cute!! Thank you for your clear instructions. I’m so happy to have found your videos.

Although, the technique of blending gradually will always look nice, as the daughter of an old time tailor and a seamstress, I'd like to share that the way my parents got the angle of how far to take in was always measured on the client, as some clients are more rounded than others and the angle will not always be exactly the same.

Thank you! I have a pair of pants that I want to take in at the waist, and I was trying to imagine how I would do this. Learning that you cut 6" down from the waist (or halfway down the pocket) helps me understand how you can make it look more natural by angling down. It's also helpful to see how you merge with the seam that is doubled over near the seat.

I appreciated the manner in which you explained each step . I have never tailored anything, just did home garment construction , and repairs . Many repairs on denim, as we lived on our farm , and husband and two sons were rough on work clothes . They never wore those clothes in school , so just work Jeans needed repairs . Thankfully the daughter never needed repairs ! What size machine needle did you use ? I use a Singer . One son lives with his family on the farm , and I do the repairs on his work pants . I caught myself clenching my teeth , so obviously my brain remembers repairs” back in the day “ ! Thank you !
