Great content! I live in New Zealand and split pine & gum for firewood. I use a Fiskars X27 for most rounds and a 3kg Sandvic Barco for stubborn bits. And I always play something doomy like the music you’ve put on this video. Good health bro.

Nice work my friend. I have the Adler, Fiskars, Granfords, and Helko. So naturally I enjoyed your vid! I too don't care for the Fiskars. I didn't know the Adler and Helko are forged from the same factory. Interesting.

Thank you KnotBreaker for a great video well produced too. I appreciate the hard work and time it must have taken to edit this and doing the voice overs and adding music etc! This is the first video of yours I have seen and your channel was an instant subscribe. And I love your rambling style narration: you sound like a Buckin' Barry White! All the best, Phil, Snowdonia, UK.

I end up splitting a fair bit of Elm, often with lots of knots since they aren't usually forest grown for me but from people's yards. I tried a few splitters recently. I've found the Wetterlings to be better than the Gransfors since the Gransfors has more of a hollow grind and just ended up sticking in the wood a lot. The traditional American pattern is too convex and does poorly even at 8 pounds. The German pattern punches above its 6.6 pound weight and has a simple straight wedge design. The Fiskars is kind of hollow and the steel is softer than even Council Tool, but it did better than all of them because its heavier. I think the German pattern is the best but I want one in about the 8-9 pound range. Muller makes the German pattern in heavier versions but the next step up is 11 pounds which is heavier than I want/need because at that point I'm moving to my bucket of wedges and also I'd have to order from out of country. I might try the Halder Simplex 9 pound maul when I can. I'm going to reprofile the American pattern this spring more in line with the German and play around. A twisted splitting maul like a twisted wedge would be fun to try out. I've liked the twisted wedges.

Hey man, I commented yesterday and found this video today. You said that the Helko, Adler, and Bison are made in the same factory and then the fit and finish is all done by the respective companies? You recommended the Adler but I was curious about the handles on these pieces. The Bison handles are treated with linseed oil and I would prefer that over varnish. How is the Adler handle?
@knotbreaker
@knotbreaker 2 жыл бұрын
All 3 companies heads are forged in the same foundry, yes. Doesn't mean they all go through the same process. However, once the head is forged, it goes to the individual companies for finishing and hanging. As far as the Adler handle, I'm not 100% sure because I don't have one. That may be a better question for @killinger

You're well able to swing KnotBreaker. Now try this: as the axe/maul is dropping down towards the wood, drop your hips and bend at the knees. That way you get more power in the strike, because you are using your body weight.
@knotbreaker
@knotbreaker 2 жыл бұрын
Solid advice. I think I do this but, backwards. When my hands are at the peak, I push my body upward to get that extra umph.
@schmojo33
@schmojo33 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. People don't bend at the knees. Not only does it add more power, but it helps keep the handle parallel with the ground so the head doesn't come toward you and if splitting on a stump, keeps it pointed into the stump instead of glancing off the stump and into the ground. Putting the piece to be split on the far end of the block usually mitigates that part.

So please bear w me on this bc I’m new to quality axes, and I’m gonna be camping for a week in Sept - I finally drew a black bear tag for WI. Took me five dang years, but finally drew one. I know I’m gonna need to split firewood bc buying enough wood for a week is gonna be a nightmare. As is cooking on a propane stove the whole time. The two I’m between are the Saxon Splitter (Helko) and the gransfors long splitting axe. The Gransfors you showed was the maul, not the long splitting axe. Would you say their splitting axe is equally as nice as the helko?

Fiskars I like is completely different?? Think it’s called the super splitting axe 36 inch ! I’m 6,4 250 . Long for a lot of head speed razor sharp with a nice profile.
