An amazingly easy way to make a great looking wooden bird box out of a log. I share another green wood project with you and show how I make to most out of some of our lower value wood by making some great looking, natural Bird boxes.
Once you have your wood and the tools, with this method it only takes a few minutes to produce some fantastic rustic wooden bird boxes.
Below is the list of tools I used.
-Hole cutting set amzn.to/2ojqxvd ,it is worth noting that it can be bit of a pain removing the plug from one of these hole cutters when wood is green.
-SugiHara 14" carving bar, chain and sprocket kit for Stihl MS171, MS181 rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Dewalt DCD795M1 Brushless 18v 4.0AH chordless Drill

You should have put in some vent holes and a few holes in the bottom in case any water gets in there so it can go out.

Perch never recommend. because predators stand on it. That’s great box design

Great idea, simple and good looking. Yes, no perch because predators use it.

I have seen loads of similar bird boxes ending up wit fungus inside. Might be a good idea to let the wood dry a bit before closing it

Nice job and the joint provides drainage with no need for extra holes to ruin the overall look .

Great work! I like the idea. But i do not think the sitting pin is necessary, it will make it easier for predators i think. Would be very interesting to see pics of bird nesting in your boxes

You are quite correct with regards to the perch. Sparrowhawks have been witnessed gripping the perch while reaching into a nestbox with the other leg to extract the tiny occupants. The most common attack on nest boxes is the woodpecker who can gain purchase on a verticle surface with ease to peck away at the nestbox to attack and consume the small inhabitants. So in most cases, the use of a perch is best avoided to give the occupants a slightly greater chance of success.

I've seen new recommendations that a "cage" made from hardware 1/4" cloth , placed at the opening will prevent birds, raccoons, and snakes from reaching the chicks or eggs. 4-5 inches protruding out, 2-3 wide for the adult bird to land and walk in, with spikes around the perimeter that result from cutting the hem. Thats a very nice looking box, I'd be concerned that the nest could be reached easily.

Beautiful design, but make it deeper, too easy for predators to get at the young especially with the perch for them to use.

I have looked at lots of ways to make bird boxes and yours is one of the most attractive. Can you confirm that you actually have birds nesting in them, because as far as I can tell they don't have the minimum recommended height in them. Thanks.

Hey there, Thanks for the compliment.. I must also say, great question!.. So basically I had the same thought as I was making these boxes and decided with these small ones to try an experiment 👍. I made about 20 of them and the 10 I kept I placed at a verity of heights ranging from roughly Ground level - 15ft. In hedgerows, on trees and on sheds, all as south facing as possible .. The results last year were quite interesting. We found that the boxes in hedgerows and on trees below 5-6ft were populated either by rodents or Wrens. We saw lots of Blue Tits investigating anything over 6ft. We do have a number of larger boxes made with this method and 3 out of 5 of those were nested in by Great Tits, the larger ones are all between 6-9ft... Sorry its a bit long winded but I hope this helps... CHEERS 👍

Thanks bud, I have to agree with you on that. Ply and chip board are like the plastics of the wood world 🤣. Cheap and nasty.

Hello there great design. Have you found the best wood for not cracking?
@PeculiarFinds
@PeculiarFinds 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers bud, that is a good question! For this particular project I used "just cut down" Alder and out of 30+ boxes I made perhaps 4-5 of them developed splits in them quite early on, The ones I put up (10 of them) have been up almost exactly a year now and are fine.. Although Alder does not split or crack too bad, it does decay quite quickly outside for a hard wood!!! Failing to find any Alder to used I would perhaps try using a very knotty or burly grained wood in an attempt to avoid cracking or splits. I could see softer woods like Pine, Larch and Conifer or even maybe Poplar being quite good at resisting cracks. Although these do have less durability outside much like the alder.

Easy to make - provided you happen to possess/have access to a chainsaw and know how to handle it. I honestly do not believe the common household owns a chainsaw.

Fair point 👍🏼. Fortunately for me chainsaws are like rats in my part of the world 'your never more than 6ft away from one' 🤣

You shouldn’t put a perch on the outside of box, as other birds can perch on it and intimidate the parents to flee the nest, birds don’t need a perch to get in or out of a bird box

Why do people who don't know what they're doing making instructional videos? One of the golden rules when making nest boxes is never to put a perch by the hole. All that does is allow predators to climb in. Maybe do some actual research next time.
