It is nearly impossible to find a Canadian who was a teen/preteen in the 90s who can’t manage the ENTIRE rap part of One Week. BNL are Canadian icons who go from lightning fast pop rock rap to nearly acoustic songs of loss. They are so worth digging into. Their first four albums are full of bangers. As a 🇨🇦 viewer suggested already & I’ll second…Bring on Maple Mondays!!! Explore the world of Canadian music. I can’t wait for the range of Jane Child to Rita McNeil to Swollen Members to give you whiplash.

Fun fact. The fade out at the end repeats “it will still be two days till we say we’re sorry”. However the very last line doesn’t say that it says “Birchmount Stadium Home of the Robbie”. It is so cool that their first big US hit has an obscure Scarborough reference. Scarborough is the section of Toronto that BNL are from.

Yayyyy I knew you’d like this one! I loveeeee this song. It’s one of those few 90s ones that stays on my playlists to this day. The lyrics are full of references that are pure 90s pop culture (“watching X-Files with no lights on, we’re dans la maison, I hope the smoking man’s in this one”) and a little bit of local Toronto lore. I have read that the song is about a big fight in a relationship, which BNL has confirmed as well. Fan theories take it further and say the couple are going through a period (one week) where they’re both too stubborn to apologize, and she won’t be intimate with him so the fast lyrics are his stream-of-consciousness as he’s trying to get his mind to think of anything else so he doesn’t end up being the one to cave and apologize. I don’t know how true that all is, but it makes the song more entertaining for me. I would put BNL in the same “geek rock” category as Weezer. Check out “The Old Apartment” by them as well. Not the same vibe as this one, but still a great song.

We love BNL!! We've seen them live a few times and they never disappointed. They have SO many good songs! I'd recommend If I had a $1,000,000 for you next. It's another really fun one. We compiled a playlist of BNL songs for my wife for when our kids were due. Our oldest was born to Brian Wilson and the youngest was Call and Answer. Both times the docs commented on how much they enjoyed the playlist, too. Oh, and the choice was extra fitting because both our children were girls!

This band is from Canada, just outside of Toronto. They were pretty damn popular in the Northeast of the U.S. in the early 90's. They came to the Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany area every summer. Straight across NY then through the New England area. I have seen them, at last count, about 9 times. Total party band. So much fun. Their concerts were so much fun. EVERYONE having an awesome time. Everyone knew all the words to their songs and all sang along! They would come to CMAC, the venue in my home town in NY, every year and one of the lead singers Ed Robertson ( the one with the black hair and guitar ) said he loved coming there because it was a beautiful area and they sold out that outdoor amphitheater every time. The other lead singer Steven Page actually met a girl in Syracuse and moved there after leaving the band. As far as I know he still lives there. Great reaction. They have a ton other great songs. Check out their live album " Rock Spectacle"

Their music is diverse. Their lyrics are usually quite clever whether it is at this speed or slower. I would suggest some of their tunes in this order. If I Had a Million Dollars Pinch Me It's All Been Done The Old Apartment They are a great band, funny guys, and excellent live. Their videos are creative. Some videos such as, this one and Pinch Me are pretty big productions and match the songs brilliantly.

I especially like “Jane”. That song always reminds me of this girl I had a crush on in college who was way too cool for me. I married that girl a few years later. We’re happily married after 25 years, and she’s still to cool for me.

I'm such a huge fan of these guys. They put on an amazing live show, they're just fun to see perform. And they do silly stuff like they'll have a bucket of ping pong balls, and on each ball is written the name of a song they haven't performed live in at least a year. And they'll just reach in and play whatever it is, even if it's a deep cut from one of the early albums and the lead singer isn't sure he remembers the lyrics.

Fun Fact: When this band was first breaking out. The Mayor of Toronto banned them from playing in that city simply because she found the bands name offensive. Given their success since then, I bet she kicks herself thinking back to her poor decision. Great reaction you two!!

The first time I saw them in concert was for their "Maroon" tour. It still ranks up in my top concerts. They had a huge amount of audience participation. They talked to people in the audience and stuff. One guy in the audience had one of those lighted boards you write on with wax pencils like you see sometimes in restaurants with the daily special on it. Ed stopped the band and asked the guy if he could borrow it for a few minutes and of course he let him. Then they spent the next probably 10 minutes playing with the board... they were singing a song and Ed would write something on the board and show it to Steve and Steve would incorporate whatever it was into the lyrics they were singing. Eventually Ed gave the board back to the guy. They did a bunch of other improv stuff, too... even making up a song about this one particular guy in the audience (a nice song, not being mean). I was genuinely sad when Steve left the band. I like a ton of their songs but I think the ones I like the most tended to be Steve on main.

Some of the best people I have ever met were when I was on my bike. My first time in Sturgis was when I was 17. Did'nt get back there till 25 years later. As you have seen yourself there is a huge difference in the view from the bike to the view from a car. Threading the needle is a major difference. Glad you got to experience it. On a bike, we are all brothers. Ride on my friend. There is so much more to see. From the Florida Keys to the PCH. Death Valley at dawn is a sight to behold.

Barenaked Ladies were a collection of high school band nerds who decided to form a rock band. The name was a joke because they were booked to play a show last minute and didn't have a name yet they just made it up on the spot and never bothered to change it. The name worked in their favor a couple of years later when they were booked to play a new years eve show in their home city of Toronto and the mayor cut them from the show because their name was offensive and it made national news across Canada and was their first big break. My favorite song from them is "What a Good Boy".
