Lady Kier is the Nicest person you ever want to meet. My son toured with her in the later years. He and another dancer. When my son passed away in 2017, Lady Kier came to his service she loved my son and she paid her respects. This was the song back in the day, and that's Bootsy Collins in this video....he's also an ICONic!!

Linda Simms, Wow. Harsh world. My condolences. What a lovely, bittersweet fact to know your son lived what sounds his best life! My first love died in 1991, and our favorite Dee-Lite song was "Who Was That?" It stings but still makes me smile to hear, "Who was that? Mr. Bubble; middle name must be Trouble." Hank was Trouble In A Bubble Of Love! 💖💔💝

As a Gen-Xer, I totally agree. I've gone back to the 80's as well and found so much experimentation and one hit wonders that rocked. Today, though, there's so much out there it's options overload. Some really cool stuff that doesn't make it to the "mainstream" but is great to listen to.

Hey I’m a boomer and I love the 80s-90s music. I was living in NYC at the time, and it was quite a time. Not to forget that it was also during the AIDS epidemic, so people were partying to get through some tough stuff about that era, too.

He’s the one who explained how funk bass works in a video, how he hits it on the first beat, then spices it up. Every time it starts on the first beat. This song is pure joy. I cannot conceive of a time it won’t put a smile on my face. In the late 80’s/early 90’s I was going to dance clubs a lot, and this was HUGE. My butt was on the floor whenever it came on. I know no one who dislikes this song.

Man, I miss prime MTV. You could see videos like Dee-Lite, followed by Ice Cube, then the Traveling Wilburys ON THE SAME CHANNEL. You could discover new music effortlessly. Things were so different - voices were real, instruments were real, faces were real. Crazy, nostalgic times.

Dee-Lite, made up of Lady Miss Kier (primarily vocals), Supa DJ Dmitry (keyboards, guitar), and Jungle DJ Towa Tei (keyboards, turntables, programming). On this song, they had the legendary Bootsy Collins from Parliament Funkadelic on bass, Fred Wesley on trombone, Maceo Parker on sax, and Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest performing the rap. Interesting piece of trivia: DJ Dmitry is still the only person from the Soviet Union to have earned a gold record in the US (for this song, in fact).

Yep. Also Bootsy Collins was also a Member Of James Brown's Band back in the day. She could have been as big as Lady Gaga but it never came into fruition, the same way that Alison Moyet could have been as big as Adele but the timing was bad.

An absolute classic and you two were adorable reacting to it! I grew up loving this as a young teenager, grew up to be a drag queen heavily inspired by the lead singer, met my idol years later, and actually ended up performing this song with the Lady Miss Kier herself onstage. (you were correct: Deee-LIte is the band's name). If you've done much looking into them, the band is incorrectly labelled a "one-hit-wonder." They came from the same NYC club scene as RuPaul in the late 1980's to 1990's and a majority of their amazing work remained in clubland and later in the early rave scene. Up until he signed on with James Brown, Bootsy could only afford a standard electric guitar strung with 4 bass strings. James bought Bootsy his first real bass guitar. James took the guitar back when Bootsy moved on.

In 1989, I went to the ROXY in NYC for the first time. The dj started playing this song, the crowd went nuts, and I swear he kept playing this song Over and over all night long. I then found out the DJ was Towa Teri, from Dee-Lite. Six months later this song took off and was a top 10 hit. Thanks for playing & reacting to Groove is in the Heart.

I was there then too. The Roxy, Warehouse, Palladium, being a club kid starting 1985 was awesome. Smoke also meant the were smoking hot & super funky. Not as much or only a drug ref

WOW! It was Memorial Day weekend '89, if I'm not mistaken. I was there! With Linda Evangelista on the legendary Roxy swing, flying on psilocybin. I get chills remembering those nights. Dee-Lite then played Wigstock in Thompkins Square Park on Labor Day '89, and Junior Vasquez opened Sound Factory shortly after that. The GOAT!

Deee-Lite were disco babies. Given that disco took in so many styles, it's not a surprise their's was so varied. Don't expect the trio's other songs to be like this one. There is an undercurrent of '90s House and Garage, which is mixed in with '60s Lounge, spoken word, r&b, and the psychedelic sounds of the early '70s. Some of their other non-pop songs are Runaway, I Had A Dream I Was Falling Through A Ozone Layer, Power Of Love, Good Beat, Thank You Every Day, Picnic In The Summertime, and Bittersweet Loving.

I heard this song at a disco in the Philippines while still in the service. I've heard bits and pieces of it on TV shows since but this was the first time to see the video. Unfortunately for me these days the funkiest thing from me comes after eating asparagus. Fun video and did make me dance in my chair a bit.
