Tuning your rates might be the single biggest way you can affect how your quad flies. Betaflight has several rate parameters: S. Rate, RC Rate, Expo. What do they do? And how do you tune them to actually get the rates that fly the best?

I've spent 3 years constantly experimenting & pondering these settings (and pids). Even though I know this stuff, I still have to stop & really think about it sometimes especially when trying to explain it to others. The way you articulated it all is just fantastic man (especially summing it up at 17:13). VERY appreciated.

Thanks for everything you do Josh. This vid helped a lot. I'm 6 months into Fpv and used my rates, Dribs rates and Stingys rates. Tried yours today, and with a little tweaking I feel I'm in the right spot now. Understanding is key. Love the way you explain things. 👍

Man, you can not imagine the funcking big impact on the race performance I got moving the rates as low as you tell!!! I have flown not for a very big time, but its unbelibable, than i did not realized that before this video. I have seen tons of your videos, but this one made my day. Not made my entre flight time. Thanks, Joshua. I watch almost all of your videos. This was definitely one of the most enlightening for me. I learned recently when playing around with them that I prefer slightly slower rates for my freestyle. I think Le Drib is similar but I actually prefer slower more fluid movements and they are much easier to achieve with slower rates. I've flown mostly with rates over 1,000 deg/s and turning them down to around 500 - 700 made things feel much better to me. Now that you've taught me the theory behind each I feel very confident in dialing them in to my exact preference. Thank you very much for making this video. 👍

Hey I just wanted to say thank you for the videos!! I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything and have it make sense. I just bought my first drone from a friend who races/freestyles and tuning it down made it much more manageable. I felt like there was a huge disconnect from the simulator to the real drone and i found it in my friends tuning. I can not wait until i can fly it comfortably in those values.

since i read your blog i have been trying to race with race rate. i have not been successfull until i watched this video. i was using s rate to get the degree/s i needed.. the problem was the middle is too sluggish and i had to more the stick further away from centre and then the rate jump. today i used rc rate to achieve the degree/s i wanted and used a bit of expo to slightly soften the middle while keeping the rest of the curve relatively linear. oh man it was great. thanks so much!

Excellent job on explaining these values. I am definitely more of what I would call a "precision flyer"/park flyer, flying through tight areas, like through the neighbor's gazebo, through tree branches, etc. I realized that as I approach the target (neighbor's porch door) and the space narrows, I have to make small, precise movements to accomplish this. The sticks are mostly at dead center at this point and a little too sensitive for me taste. Now I understand that I can change this through those settings in Betaflight. Thanks for the video, Joshua!

After watching this video, I went to Liftoff and played with the rates. I increased my rates for freestyle flying and decreased my rates and tried racing. Holy cow! You're right, with the lower rates I shaved several seconds off my best lap times and with higher rates my freestyle flying felt more like how I want it to. Thanks for the education!

Thank you, great video. I used the settings from your BetaFlight ultimate guide tutorial to fly in simulation with my taranis, I ended up bumping the pitch and roll to 1080dps and the yaw to something between 7 or 800dps. Worked wonders! To top it off today I went out with my neighbour to fly his drones, it was my first time flying a drone whilst my own talon is waiting for last parts to complete it. He congratulated me on the amount of control I had over his drones and how I was flying, all I said was “Joshua Bardwell tutorials and simulator time” I was honestly surprised to how well the flights went, it was only line of sight but now I have the confidence to maiden the Talon, all thanks to your advice. Honestly these videos are so so valuable. I’d say 80 to 90% of what I know is because of your channel from software & hardware to soldering techniques.

Well over due ,but a really good straight forward and short explanation video. I have been really trying hard to get an understanding of this and about a week ago I decided just to spend a entire day playing around with rates and tweeking my PIDS and as a result accidently discovered how much of a difference in flight performance this made between using 5" props RC rate low Super Rate high and 6"props RC Rate high Super Rate low ! I had been trying to tune and reduce vibration on my quad when flying 6" props and getting nowhere ,but after reversing the rates and slight tweek in the PIDS ,it made a huge difference ,no more vibration and smother rolls and pitches.Funny thing is just prior to your video Timmy RC made a similar video "I think from my request" and explained the subject really well and I agree with you ,to understand this you have to just play around with rates to see how they feel for you as its a personal thing ,everyone is going to be different .

great video! somehow all week, topics that I have been researching or looking deeper into, you've released a video covering. bags, smartport, cmos cams and now rates (which i've been toying with all week.) one thing I've been doing to try to get a better understanding of the feel of the changes was tweeking numbers in the liftoff simulator, which uses a copy of betaflight and is pretty accurate, at least enough to feel differences and figure out what I want to try out in real life.

Another excellent video JB. I've been looking for a decent video that explains Rates well for a while and tend to only come across PID tuning videos which assume everyone understands Rates. I actually started out setting my rates based on the Freestyle Dynamic preset in the Liftoff simulator as that's what I got used to in the simulator and it actually worked much better than I expected, but based on your video I have a lot more idea on where to go from there now, as I'm still not 100% happy with it and I also need to do PID tuning on my quad, but have held off doing so as most videos suggest using your normal rates to tune with and I don't really have a rate I'm 100% comfortable with yet.

Interesting to see Joshua. That bit at 14:45. When people started getting accustomed to using super rate, the unwritten rule was "don't use expo". I never bought into that and I've always added extra expo. This simply because you can get a curve with rate and super rate, but there are specific curves you can't get without adding expo. The math only adds up to so much. I like a lot of expo, because I freestyle and race with the same rates. At one time I was running 1.4/.72/.45. I've been pushing my rates further and further down to improve my racing, yet still be able to freestyle. Now I'm at 1.25/.71/35... But as you can see, I always add some extra expo.

It seems people adjust stuff on the right first before the actual individual pids, then like everything they adjusted is more so for "to the plastic" or near full stick movements. Then its like well are you adjusting your rates to how you prefer to fly, or are you adjusting then trying to manage flying at some rates your not accustomed to. I guess technically you could do either or if your a hands on person and can understand and dig down to realize what to tune or back off/add onto.

Steele has high rates at full stick deflection but he uses Super Rate and RC Expo to change the Rate curve so that the center is more doughy. Look at Stingerswarms rates, his are exactly like Steeles but with a load of Expo added onto it.

I have 2 profiles - 1 freestyle, 1 racing. Racing is ~450 deg/sec and freestyle is ~900, but they feel nearly identical in most of the stick travel. I basically tuned my freestyle rates so that the middle to ~75% stick deflection feels pretty much the same as my racing rates. This way it is pretty easy to switch from racing to freestyle as they feel nearly identical apart from the very ends. You can do this by setting a stick to a certain position in 'race' profile, looking at the degrees and then trying to match it in your freestyle profile by adjusting expo/super rate. Do this in multiple stick positions along the curve.

sure, here they are: Racing: RC Rate: 1, Super Rate 0.56, RC Expo 0.0 Freestyle: RC Rate 1, Super Rate 0.77, RC Expo 0.3 All axis are the same (Roll, Pitch, Yaw). D Setpoint Weight is at 2.55 and D Setpoint transition at 1. Racing rates are pretty similar to what EnvyAstro flys with. Freestyle rates are a bit milder/less direct in the middle. If you try them out, let me know how you like them :)

Joshua, great video per usual. One point I'm not sure you got across quite clearly. RC-expo actually softens the quad movement around the center of the stick. In other words it gives you a wider band of stick movement to be more precise within. If that's what you meant then I just didn't pick it up that way when I listened.

I know this is old, but you should do a video on throttle expo and midpoint as well. This is what has helped me the most since the very sensitive throttle is what I was fighing the most. My early simulator flights and then again when I moved to my physical quad were full of throttle over correction. Put your throttle position on your OSD with a flat curve, find out where your quad is neutrally bouyant for both your hover in place and where you fly level. Then set the midpoint somewhere in the middle of those number (worked well for me) and then add in some throttle expo. the more expo you put there, the more 'sticky' your throttle will get to that mid position. So you can more easily hold a level line. This was actually quite hard for me on my physical quad because it was so damn touchy on throttle it hovers stable at like 15% throttle. That is WAY too touchy for my stupid fingers, heh.

I've watched this like a hundred times. It's finally making sense. I lowered the rates, for me, it felt a whole lot more in sync with what my brain was trying to do. I upped the rate and it was like "oh my God". I'm not there 100%. More playing with settings and tons more stick time. I won't be the best FPV pilot ever. But, well, whatever... At the end of the day, I'll have had fun flying and that my friend is worth GOLD. Now get out there and rip balls!!!

I am fly both fpv and simulator but in the "sim" flying in carpark is like impossible the throttle is so hard to control i try for a few hours and i tweak my throttle curve it make it easier to control. Can you share some point u feel that can improve throttle management at tunning? I also try out your firgure 8 pratice on real FPV my throttle is like so bad that it go up and down the turn. can share some tips here Beside keep praticing and other way to train or gauge the feel?

Very helpful. I've had a hard time tuning rates, keep bouncing up and down looking for the feel I want. I almost had what I wanted using radio rates, but transferring them to Betaflight has been harder than I expected. Betaflight doesn't translate from standard "radio" rates well and seems to require a different approach. I think now I understand the Betaflight tools better. I'm hoping once I learn how to use them properly, I'll find that Betaflight outperforms my radio setup, and it will be nice to be doing it as intended. Thanks!
@patrickcol

Which kind of begs the question, why did you transfer them from the radio?
@scottmarshall6766
@scottmarshall6766 6 жыл бұрын
A couple of reasons, I'm looking for a better setup, to free up a switch on my radio (a secondary concern), and Joshua recommended that I use the Betaflight Rates during a livechat. I should have started right out using the Betflight system, it's the "right" way to set up a quad. I started tuning rates in the radio back when I began to get serious about quad flying because it was familiar and it helped my control a lot, especially having dual rates. I've now progressed to where I think the Betaflight system would help me fly better, additionally, I don't want to train myself to use only my unique system.

IN the video you talk about freestyle and race rates. What would you lean more toward for indoor flying? Race rates will give control, but freestyle type of rate will give the quickness to avoid objects.

I would lean towards lower rates for Whoop-style indoor racing.

The idea of zero S.Rate and adding expo for racing!! I must try that 👍💪

Hi Joshua, I think tuning rates depends on whether you are a pincher flier on the sticks vs. a thumb flier. Less precision makes the rates seem more out of control and perhaps faster/ harder to control. I use slower rates because I am a thumb flier. What do you think? Thanks for the great instructions!

what kind of changes do you recommend in rc, super and expo rates in a stock betaflight configuration, for a 2-inch brushless quad, in order for it to behave more smoothly for indoor flying those cold days of winter..? is it possible to tune it in way so that it could fly like a whoop?
