if the customer doesnt have the funds to lay it, how on earth can they pay it out. betfair have nothing to do with the wins/losses of exchange bets. the exchange was broken, the customer laid £21m with only £1k in their account. the site was broken, so they have to void the market. nothing outrageous or deceptive here imo.

If you are backing a horse at 29 with a clear lead and a few hundred yards to run, you know there is an error. While most of your bookie vids show them up for what they really are, in this case however most fair minded people would or should side with Betfair. If people have lost money through arbitrage bets that is a risk they have chosen to take.

Having watched a few of these videos now, it's clear to me that anyone who spots a pricing/technical error favourable to the punter and dives in can expect the inevitable brick wall put up after the event. Probably best to stick with successful trading strategies and avoid believing that corporations will honour any bets unfavourable to them as a consequence of their own error.

I live in NSW Aussie n can’t seem to find an online booking agent to take bets about 4 days ahead of race day. I travel a lot n would like to place a few bets prior to travel but can’t seem to find one. I notice Sports bet n others show fluctuations that indicate betting movements from a Wednesday for racing on a Saturday but those agents don’t offer fixed betting that far in advance. Do u know of any that I could open an account with. ? Thanks Paul

I do wonder if they provide liquidity or what sort of relationship there is between the betting exchanges and the main liquidity providers? Like this "error" was it really an error on the part of a liquidity provider rather than Betfair? Was this a feature on the part of Betfair? For example, if someone were to provide liquidity to multiple markets on Betfair, inc lay bets, you'd have to lock up a lot of cash, they know liquidity providers make consistent profits - did they allow some liquidity providers to actively trade without having to put up the funds theoretically required to cover all their positions? If that were the case and some "fat finger" type error occurred on the part of the liquidity provider then that could explain how they allowed those bets and resulting liability to be matched I guess.

Similar thing happened to me on Betfair exchange a few years ago - granted expected winnings much lower. I placed a e/w Canadian bet at a rather routine evening fixture at Wolverhampton, and all five won. Expected winnings when I placed the bet was £2,400 and looking forward to dumping that back on the debit card. Only got back £143.90. Because that's all the punter had in their account. BFair refused to cough up the rest, and I even recieved no response when I helpfully pointed out it's software should only match and place punter v punter, when the expected payout of the bet matches and or exceeds the balance held in the other account.. Now only place Sportsbook bets with Betfair and take their money instead..

This is why I dont bet or trade on sports anymore. Its not worth it.

Blatant insider trading error...there is no way betfair would void a bet for a "customers mistake", especially as this "error" wouldn't cost them a penny and would have actually made them money from commissions. A bet could never be placed by a punter if the funds aren't available (doesn't matter what software you are using) which further shows it couldn't have been one of their customers. Doesn't it seem strange that every exchange has the exact same odds, never any price variation between them which further proves they aren't just peer to peer and do in fact have insider trading to profit & manipulate the markets.

I know this has never happened before this occasion, nor again since; but the bigger question here is "how on earth was this able to happen at all".

Suppose, instead of £600 million, they'd accrued a liability of £600 billion due to this rogue bot.
