As someone who's been influenced massively by Cornell, something that's always fascinated me is how little he opens his mouth when he's singing(outside of his wailing highs of course). I can't say it's something that I've ever noticed with anyone but Chris, he's just one of the most relaxed singers I've ever seen even though his performances sound like he's putting so much into it.

@@Trautman26 Saying that it's the "Pearl Jam" lineup completely misrepresents what is going on here, and with Temple Of The Dog itself. It was a band to honor Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone (who Gossard and Ament were in, with Andrew Wood). Cornell was Wood's roommate. Why Matt Cameron? Simply put, at the time of Temple Of The Dog, he was in Soundgarden. While I know you were pointing out that they would all eventually be in Pearl Jam, saying they are "actual[ly] Pearl Jam" is a great disservice to their non-Pearl Jam careers.

All the big "Grunge" vocalists, Cobain, vedder, Staley, Weiland are/were phenomenal talents. Cornell moves my soul. His upper range at the time of this performance was peak for him. No human being on planet earth could ever speak to me like he could. Plant in 68-71 comes close, but cornell is king. It's the tone, the range, the power and the distortion. My list of the greatest drummers I've seen stands at 3, and I won't even try with guitarists, as it would be more than 10(20? 30?). For rock singers, off the top of my head I'd say Chris, Maynard, Eddie, Freddie, RJD. The one I've never seen, but I've always loved listening to, is Chris Thompson(Manfred Mann's Earth Band).

Chris wrote "Reach Down" with space for long guitar solos, but before Mike played it, "we thought he was just a nice little kid." After hearing him fill those spaces, "he's got something in there, he's infected, and that's gonna come out again somewhere." Mike's reaction, "That's 100% accurate." A guitar solo should always be an expression of the way the song makes the player feel. Mike pulls those emotions out of himself and when we listen intently, makes us feel as well.

It feels like he shows more vocal similarities with his "grunge" brethren in this version. The "Rs" you were referring to are often known as the grunge "yarl". Eddie and Layne both employed that technique as well... Chris to a lesser extent (especially in all of their heydays). It's interesting to see Chris using that, because I don't really remember that from him in his studio recordings from that period.

This song is actually dedicated to one of his best friends Andy Wood who had his own band named Mother Love Bone until he overdosed on heroin in the early 90s. The guitarist and I believe the bassist in Temple of A Dog were in Mother Love Bone and after their singer passed they took out an ad in a paper for a new singer and recruited Eddie Vedder and became Pearl Jam.

Temple of the Dog was formed to mourn and honor Andrew Wood's death the Seattle musicians that knew him and all wrote songs and then decided to get together to share with the world. RIP Andy you were the founding ledgend without Mother Love Bone the world may have never known.

Beth you are talking about the King here 👑 i feel honoured to no end to be born at the time this angel sang and came to be famous, im 52 years old very privileged for being there from the beginning, please understand how this sounded in 1991, I in my youth called him the Jesus Christ of music/voice, and im not even religious :) the whole Temple og the Dog album IS my favorite of all time, i still cry listening to it, "four walled world" is another miracle he sang or "call me a dog" or or or or.....this is the only human i listen to sing love songs or romantic songs, i dont like them, but Chris Cornell is no ordinary singer is he now? This is the BEST singer of ALL times! thank you for your words. RIP angel 💖

This song is a tribute to Andrew Wood, lead singer of the Seattle grunge band Mother Love Bone. Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990, and his band mates Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard joined Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden to form Temple Of The Dog and release one album in honor of Wood. Cornell wrote the song.

This far from Cornell's best performance, but it gives a glimpse into his greatness to come shortly later. His peak live was '92 to early '95..

This song he wrote for his friend and once roommate__singer of the band "Mother Love Bone" (MLB)__Andy (Andrew) Wood who died by OD before the release of MLBs first album. Also, in this "Temple of the Dog" band are past members of Mother Love Bone along with Andy; bass and rhythm guitar players - Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. Chris Cornell once said of Andy....that he believed Andy, if anyone, would be 'THE ONE' who would get the Seattle music scene noticed. I still love playing my Mother Love Bone CD. It is so good. Sadly though, I've yet to see MLB getting any attention by reactors. Nor much mention of in comments when this Temple of the Dog song is reacted to. There's some, yes, but the song is a deep and loving tribute to their lost friend, Andy.
