Better Call Saul table read for season 2 episode 1.This video is taken from the blu-ray extras of season 2.
BCS is one of my favorite TV shows and I just love how well-acted it is. And seeing the actual behind the scene footage and the real process of making the show is so interesting and inspiring. That, I think that every fan of the show must see them.

It's interesting when you just hear the script read, because you realize how much Mike and Nacho are more visual roles versus verbal roles. They convey much of their character through presence, facial expression and internalizing, which makes the viewer kind of feel what they're feeling, without words. Them reading the script makes their role seem simplistic, but once filming it, you can see they must really convey and evolve those few words into something way beyond that. Pretty awesome.

It's also just a question of how people approach the script. If you watch the Breaking Bad table read for Blood Money, Aaron Paul is super emotionally invested in his scenes and delivers every bit as truthful as he does on screen, whereas Dean Norris is very restrained, compared to the actual scene they shot in where he is A-MA-ZING. Some people handle the table read as if they were in the actual scene and some people purposefully avoid it so they can hit the raw emotional spot on the day.
@thejew1789
@thejew1789 4 жыл бұрын

I'm listening to the behind-the-scenes podcast right now and the amount of love and care that goes into every single detail of the show is just incredible. There's not a line that wasn't sweated over by writers, not an acting choice that wasn't carefully considered by the actors, not a cut that wasn't agonized over by directors and editors... The sets, the costumes, the music, every second of this show was done intentionally and with love. It's a great podcast if you like to know the behind-the-scenes of shows.

Often on television shows the actors get so little time to rehearse. I'm sure Rhea was looking at this table read as a kind of dress rehearsal, so she has already studied her lines inside and out. Remember too, Bob Odenkirk is not a traditional actor, but an improv, sketch comic, so he gets into his roles a little differently.

I love Kim as a character. It is an example of how to include strong and complex female characters that feel natural rather than adding one in there and forcing their development just so the studio can feel good about themselves.

What's interesting is how close to his final reading Johnathan Banks always is. He's reading the lines for the first time but his instincts for how Mike should talk is so correct, he pretty much has it right away. In contrast, the way Jimmy ends up doing those lines is way different than how Odenkirk initially says them.

This makes me want to see the Table Read of the episode where Kim rages, unjustly, at Howard in his office. That scene, even if she was absolutely wrong in doing so, was so powerful that it made me cheer her on as if Howard was in the wrong. That performance by Rhea has stuck with me ever since that episode. I really, really, really admire her as an actress! None of Rhea's acting felt wrong, even though Kim was absolutely wrong flaring up at Howard the way she did right after Chuck's suicide.

Heh...See why they do these. They trimmed down the edges of the Ken Wins section. No Cain from Kung Fu correction. A lot of Ken's bluetooth dialogue happens offscreen while Jimmy and Kim were talking. And they play the dialogue faster in the actual episode. More bouncing off each other. Less pausing. Plus is good to see what the directorial choices do to add to the dialogue. Like in the episode while Jimmy is doing his work on Ken, you get a lot of asides to Kim's expressions as she slowly gets mesmerized by Jimmy just spinning this web of lies. That really helps to keeps the dialogue from feeling as long as it does here. Also after Jimmy asks Kim is she's okay just talking to Ken, and both of them look at her...they cut off her to the Jimmy sliding into the booth. Without the connecting dialogue of her saying yes. They yes is more implied by the outcome than by dialogue. So they first time you really see Kim warming up to the situation is when she throws out her fake name. Just a bunch of little touches. They all do great work.

Im surprised to see that the whole cast sits through a reading of an entire episode because I thought it wouldn't be time effective but I can see it helps with building a sense of each character within the whole show even if they don't share screen time together. Its also interesting how some of the actors do the lines in character and others just read it out without any expression.

It’s actually extremely cost effective. It costs them basically nothing to practice and have a table read so that they can fix imperfections, and change aspects of scenes that might not be quite right after hearing it out loud. But it costs them tens of thousands per day to hire film crew, transportation to filming sites, build props. So it’s much more cost effective to simply do a table read and then only need a couple of takes per shot on the day of filming:)
