I had a question I was gonna ask Josh however since you built it it maybe best to ask you. I was interested to know why no steam instruments were included as a backup, if there was a complete electric outage. There would be nothing to fly by, correct?

@@InstrumentPilotBartram hi, the standby g5 has a battery in it so you would have attitude, altitude, and airspeed display that would allow you some time to get the aircraft on the ground.

Those are gorgeous instruments. Unfortunately, if I were a passenger, and something happened to the pilot, I would not be able to see a lot of those displays with my vision. Nice panel makeover. Great choices. I do think something isn’t quite right with your terminal guidance. Both approaches you shared had a right of center deviation within 1 mile to rwy. The autopilot should keep you center all the way with that equipment.

I own a Piper Cherokee 140 and it's so easy to get caught up in the need for speed, or additional useful load. But I watch what you're doing with 991 and you are demonstrating that the limitations that I feel with my airplane are all in my head. You're doing so much with a similar engine, load and airspeed. It's a reminder that, instead of focusing on the next airplane, focus on how great it is to just have an airplane. Thanks for that reminder.

Your comments re autopilot were on point. Yes, it’s important to not get lazy or complacent and just let the autopilot do all the flying… you need to do enough hand flying to stay competent. (As an example, AOPA has a tragic video about a pilot whose GPS stopped working as he was trying to land with Bingo fuel, and his inability to fly the approach by hand ended up costing his life.) HOWEVER… your autopilot reduces pilot workload and fatigue dramatically, which frees you up to concentrate on nav and comms, and the autopilot can and will fly your instrument approaches (and departures!) more precisely and safely than you can by hand. It’s a fantastic tool and I predict you are going to love it, especially in this amazing new avionics suite you’ve installed. Congratulations on the project’s completion!

Smiling! Very Cool! Great looking navigation system. My son started his journey a few years back but life got in his way, that and building a new house. How often I wished I could pay for his training but just never had the money. Well I got my wish, and last Friday Aug. 19th 2022 after church his mother and I gave him a check that should cover it. God blessed us with a pretty good check on some family land stuff and we were able to pay it forward. He is 51 and me 72 so can't wait to fly with him, maybe I can do a plane next time. I use to fly with my ham radio friend in the 70's and 80's in his Mooney and took him along sometimes, guess that is why he got the bug. His boss our pastor Keith Moore Faith Life Church Branson MO. Sarasota, FL. has been flying for years. He just made a trip to Africa in his Falcon 9 to spread the good news. So cool for sure.

Really enjoy your videos and exciting to watch the new systems in a 172. I have not been able to fly for almost 10 years now because of age and health problems, but I still get excited watching your videos in a plane I learned and loved to fly almost 55 years ago. Would love to get a chance to fly one with the equipment you have put on yours....but I'm pretty sure I never will, so I just do it vicariously by watching your videos.

Had my A36 done last year, 95% the same choices. You’ll love it, as you said ….choosing to hand fly is the toughest thing as the automation works so well…but a servo going out on the way to Oshkosh (fixed under warranty) this year forced me to have 5 hours of (overdue) IFR by hand practice in all but 30 mins of VFR…saved my life as i had a much worse than planned stationary front and 4 hours of heavy, bumpy at night IFR on the way back to Dallas……main message…hand flying the hard parts regularly is a must,…and you will have to make yourself do it.

What a game changer! She (80991) turned out Beautifully indeed! You've mentioned pilot fatigue and how your new avionics package will help reduce these symptoms. I would imagine that in the interim all of the new systems will add to your workload. Of course with all of your experiences I very well could be mistaken. I was not being judgmental man, I was just making an assumption, right or wrong. Can't wait to see all that lay ahead for you and an amazing new full set of instrumentation packages. Thank you for letting us tag along for the ride!

Well Josh, 991 looks really awesome. My ONLY question is why did you keep the sidewalls the same brown color as before? Personally, I think they would have looked better in a couple of shades of grey. :D You did a really great job designing and laying out the panel, and I think the upgrades from where you were to where you are now are amazing. It truly gives an older airplane a new lease on life, especially in today's airspace system.

So my secondary CFI looked over at me before a one pattern, kick out (if you know, you know) and asked, “can we swap headsets?” I wore his beat up Bose. He experienced my Lightspeed. The Bose was only a tad more quiet...... but we both agreed the Lightspeed was leaps and bounds more comfortable. I inherited my dad’s old Jeep, sold it to buy my Zulu3, and haven’t looked back yet..... and the CFI confirmed everything I had been experiencing.

Hi Josh, now hear me out, first I’d like to congratulate you, and Daytona, on 80991. What a fantastic airplane it turned out to be since you and your Dad acquired it, and with the new panel now, I’m sure we all can’t wait to come along with you on all your up coming flights! Now, about the side panels, leave them "as is", they seem in good shape and still look very good, their color is neutral enough so they don’t clash with the new interior, they show where the airplane is coming from, like a kind of pedigree, and, in my opinion, they add loads of character. Anyway, just this guy’s opinion. Enjoy this amazing magic carpet of yours, now with Garmin Glass!
