Cyclocross is often seen as the eccentric uncle of the cycling family. It's too far from both mountain biking and road cycling to be familiar to either of these groups of riders, and yet, especially in winter, it's quite possibly the best way to enjoy riding a bike!

Just bought a CX bike and went for my first ride today. Paths, roads, gravel...and then I came to a snowy park that still had sled jumps built. You better believe I got airborne a few times on those jumps! As a roadie (mainly crit racer), it will be a great way to continue to ride outside year round while at the same time, maintaining the same position and riding style as road. I have an old MTB, and it’s fun too, but it’s just so different. My cross boss is basically my road bike with fatter tires and that I can ride pretty much anywhere except single track

KevB Gravel bikes are most of the time heavier bikes meant for long exploring rides. Light cross bikes you use in the mud on a parkour that repeats itself multiple times with plenty of obstacles you have to know inside out.
@nstrug
@nstrug 3 жыл бұрын
@@pieterm.7615 yeah, I think this is the thing that some people miss. Cyclocross is a race discipline. A cyclocross bike is like a WRC rallye car - great at what it does but you don’t want to use it as your daily driver. A gravel bike is the practical version you would actually want to use for everything but racing- like a Ford Focus RS.

A CX course is typically less technical and faster than an MTB XO course. MTB courses are also designed so that you can ride the whole thing whereas CX courses are designed so that you will always have some running. If you want to take an analogy from running, then CX is cross country whereas MTB is trail.

@@nstrug exactly -- in CX races the getting off the bike, running, and lots of slow-down then sprint up to speed features of CX (tight corners, off/on bike, etc) are literally designed for that huge test of cardio/fitness that these slow down -- speed up cycles requires - it like doing 100 sprints in 30 mins. It's intense - a single 45 min CX race will leave you on the verge of puking, tasting metal, etc. But it's addicting and fun -- i love the bike handling, riding obstacles challenge that CX presents.

You don't need to ride with the pros, there are plenty of clubs that do cyclocross events. My club, welland valley, runs local league races. There are also mtb events that you can ride in. I have seen a few crosses in the friday nights summer series, which is mtb racing. Also mountain bike orienteering events will see a good smattering of crossers. One note. Those tyres are more summer issue. You want a bit more nobly to get up that grassy hill. You can get just as much fun with an entry hardtail mtb. 1.8s for winter.

Awesome fun going over that varied soft-muddy-terrain. Do-able on a bike with rim brakes but much for predictable with disc brakes. Great to see GCN team highlighting the need to have fun and not just speed. Also great point about riding on road producing greater wind-chill because of the sustained speeds of the bikes on the roads.That's why typically MTB and road riders can have differing clothing and layering systems. 👍

If a jetwash doesn't necessarily breach bottom brackets or sealed bearings in general, why would a mere dip in muddy water? Obviously it's a different matter with open or ceramics & bushes etc. I'd be more worried about cables, drive trains & derailleurs than bearings, plus ingress into the frame, seat post & headset areas.
@luukrutten1295
@luukrutten1295 3 жыл бұрын
@@1JemPot The water ingress in the frame attacks the bearings from behind which usually isnt containing much effective sealing, plus it doenst really dry in there unless you take the bike all apart. Freehub contains water now for sure. It is al and good if you pull the bike apart to clean and dry out the water immediately after the ride. I wouldnt be worried about derailleurs too much hit them with WD40 to displace the water. I can tell you if you leave that bike for a week without maintenance and store it directly after you will have rusty bearings all over.
@1JemPot
@1JemPot 3 жыл бұрын
@@luukrutten1295 Sealed bearings are sealed both sides by definition. You're right that a lot of set ups don't have adequate seals or protection on the inside though, good point. Also I must admit, I meant to include wheels, (esp. cup & cone), in the things I'd be more worried about - and I hadn't considered the free hub specifically; that will definitely suffer in pretty much every case. Although if you leave any bike like that untreated for a week, then you're a muppet & should know better lol.

Hey...if you ride your bike, things will eventually need to be replaced! You wouldn't think of NOT driving your car too much because it would mean you would need to change the oil...right?! I love it! It's exactly why I didn't know what type of bike to buy! (got a hybrid in April, as it was similar to the old Mountain bike I grew up with, but just ordered my first road bike) Old school mountain biking! The old Rigid frame, no big jumps, just speed and a bit of slip, but on those cross, does require more skill than a modern mountain bike. I take my hybrid on similar tracks, with 32mm slick's, or 42mm minimal grip. It's fun, but with the proper tires it's faster but more boring! I think it was invented because, you were either a roadie, or not, and as time has gone on the gap widened making the old Mountain bike, either a modern Hybrid or a the road version, a Gravel or cross bike, which with except for the handlebars is exactly the same as my OLD Rigid Mountain bike.

All credit to you guys, looks like you had terrific fun & Hank's level of commitment to get the furthest across that pond was epic! But wouldn't it have been a bit easier on bikes with more knobbly tires & wider bars - e.g. an MTB?

GCN, it's time to get an electric motorcycle for the camera crew. Hearing that petrol engine was fine in the beginning, but it's starting to get a bit annoying.

I've never been able to understand the appeal of cyclocross.....getting freezing cold, soaking wet, and covered from head to toe in mud....that's what I used to do as a kid !. Aaahhh...NOW I get it ! 😁

Got a bunch of bikes but my cheap, 8000km+ cross bike is the Swiss army knife of bikes and affords big smiles all the time. Anyone that asks me about 'getting in to cycling', I steer towards a cross bike.
