What’s up guys! In this video I compare the Core Home Fitness Adjustable dumbbells to the Ativafit Adjustable Dumbbells. I go over why I prefer and think the core home fitness dumbbells may be a better choice than the nuobell flexbell adjustable dumbbells for most home gyms. I also speak on my experience with Ironmaster dumbbells, Bowflex 552, Yes4all and some safety and convenience issues I’ve experienced with them. I will be getting the nuobell flexbell adjustable dumbbells soon to do a real comparison and let you guys know what I think!

How have the Core held up? I’ve seen quite a few reviews about plates chipping/breaking.
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
They’ve held up great. The only way to break or chip anything would be either dropping them or slamming them down when trying to put them back on the trays. Once in awhile when you go to put them back it might be a little off so you got a pull back up like an inch and then go down so it slides in correct instead of forcing it down which is where you could break something. Basically if you take care of them they will last along time, if you plan to be ruff with them like a real dumbbell eventually something will break.

Matt, Really appreciate the breadth of your comparisons and comments that touched on the various brands! I won a set of adjustable dumbbells from work, where I can select either the Bowflex 52.5 option or the Core Home Fitness. Prior to your review and GamerBody review, I was leaning towards Bowflex. No, it seems clear that I'll be opting for the Core Home Fitness set. Love the compactness, in that they are only as long/bulky as the weight you're lifting...compared to Bowflex and others that have a bulky, rattling-like frame when you do not have the weight in the carriage maxed out. I noticed this as a major pet peeve in using my NordicTrack adjustables that were included as an incentive to buy my treadmill. I also loved and agree with your recommendation, that if you're going to be lifting more than 50+ lbs for dumbbell exercises, adjustables may not be the best option. Again, thank you! I subscribed and look forward to more reviews. Keep it up! and Live strong.

That’s an awesome setup! Had that setup for a bit, just the safety issues I was having with the plates easily able to dump off and changing all the plates got old for me. At least you don’t have to change them for the lighter lifts though. For people who need to save space that is one of the best setups you can get.

Hey no problem! No need to really get 5-50lb dumbbells when you can just get the core and save all that space and probably some money. They change weight so quick and as long as you don't plan on dropping or being super ruff with them they will last along time. If you have the space and wanna wait, you still can't beat real dumbbells. I just have a feeling it's going to be a good while until they are in stock but I could be wrong.

The Nuobell is a better design and much quicker to change weight between sets, but has the issues I addressed in video. The PowerBlocks will most likely last longer, just not a personal fan of the design or adder weights. They are both hard to find in stock without paying a ton

For me smaller the plates the better is in terms of mobility options. But between both theres not such of a difference. Also i hate those ironmaster square plates due to the fact that if it drops on you the sides hurts more, and since i do a lot of failure sets im always hitting my chest, legs, shoulders and even the head once in a while when doing triceps over the head lifts. At least isnt toblerone plates.

Hey Matt: what happened with the Ironmasters that you think causes it to fail? By chance did the plates or dumbbells hit each other when doing incline or flat chest press or shoulder presses? I could see it coming loose from that. I always make sure they are tight before using them and try not to clank them together. I think the only adjustable dumbbell I have confidence of not failing is a Powerblock elite or personal trainer that is al metal. I had nuobells fail on me once, the last plate came off. Luckily I wasn’t injured. But that one time was more than enough to put doubt in me of it happening again. I read someone else experienced the same thing on the 80-70lb weight. I believe it happens because there is so much force being exerted on the last connector pieces at this weight speeding up the wear and tear on the plastic. On the lighter 50lb set it won’t happen as fast because there is not as much force on the pieces. What do you think?
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you've said. With the Ironmaster when I'd go to tighten the screws some would over tighten and then instantly become lose as I'd try to make sure it was tight before lifting. So I'd have to purposely not tighten to much. Hope that makes sense

@@MattTolbers I didn’t experience this problem but did feel one of the handles something was loose inside. I reached out to Ironmasters and they sent me a set of 4 shims or washers. These seem right up my ally due to the size being reasonable, but, reading a lot of amazon reviews where the mechanism that changes weights breaks rendering them useless. Kinda makes me nervous for that kind of money. Granted most if not all were people who dropped them (albeit from a very small height) but still. I don't drop the spin on old school type weights I have now but I also don't want to have to pussy foot around 600 dollar dumbbells either. Has your experience been good the last few months?
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
People always find a way to break things. The overall rating is 4.5 stars on Amazon which shows most people like them a lot. Mine work perfect still. There are no perfect adjustable dumbbells yet, I could go through them all and name flaws. I just think core have the best design and safety of them all. Just don’t drop them or slam them back in the tray and they should last many years until there’s a new better design which eventually there will be. So I definitely still recommend them, just be someone who takes care of your stuff and don’t let any of your ruff friends come over and start throwing stuff around lol

They are a new company and don't have much going on that I see yet. Their Bowflex dumbbell knockoff seems like a good price if that's what you're looking for. They also sell the old version of the nuobell which I wouldn't get.
@lmoragon
@lmoragon 3 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, I would first get a pair of 80lb Nuobells before claiming that the Core dumbbells are better. Both of them you can't drop, period, so no advantages or disadvantages there. Placing the Nuobells back in their "holders" is not difficult at all unless you're being careless, which applies to just about any adjustable dumbbell. Now, as far as savings are concerned, do you know how much a pair of 55,60,65,70,75, and 80 lb dumbbells will cost you these days? I'm sure anyone who is setting up a home gym this year knows! The money savings alone makes the Nuobells a superior choice IMO for those wanting to save on space and money. Get yourself a pair of 80 lb Nuobells and a pair of Ironmasters that go to 120 lbs (that's my current setup). Because the Nuobells go up to 80lbs, you won't have to waste time with the Ironmaster DBs going below 75 lbs, and you can just focus on setting up the weight between 85 lbs and 120 lbs. Less space, less money, and weights that go to 120 lbs, which is more than plenty for even serious bodybuilders. Get the Cores if you don't want to lift more than 50 lbs, period.
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis, I'm not saying they are better "period" I'm saying in my opinion they may be a better choice for most home gym for the reasons I explained. I've watched a bunch of reviews on them and can see where the issues may lie from experience with many different types of dumbbells. Any time you have to set down more weight like 80lbs compared to 50lbs after a big set it will be harder to set down into the slots gently. With the groves being smaller and only at the top on the Nuobell that makes you have to be a lot more careful on top of it being harder to set down gently with more weight which results in them getting jammed and possibly breaking easier. The Core's lighter weight and grove design make that way less likely. Not saying everyone has problems with it, just a general truth. You are corrects neither can be dropped, which is why heavier adjustable dumbbells can be an issue for many because that's what they tend to drop after a big set of chest press or should press. Why I use core for my 5-50lb lifts and real dumbbells I can drop and be ruff with for weight over that. Also Adjustable dumbbells have a chance of something breaking and dropping on your face or head which is another reason I'd prefer real dumbbells for the heavier lifts. Yes core+ 55-80lb dumbbells will cost more then just getting nuobell, but for the reasons I've stated it's worth the investment in my opinion. Your setup is very good though and I appreciate you giving your opinion.

A Nuobell review video shows the interlocks that hold the plates together are plastic!!! That’s a bullshit design. When you have a full stack, the interlock on the inner most plate will have to carry the total weight of the outer plates, for example if you hold the dumbbell vertically when doing behind the head triceps extensions. This is especially dangerous because I can imagine the plastic interlock on the innermost plate failing at full extension and dumping the stack of plates, which would come crashing on your head. Am I wrong about the plastic interlock? It would have been great if Nuobell designed their plates with an iron interlocking mechanism; for example, formed as part of the plate, like with the Core Fitness plates. Having said all that, I way prefer the Nuobells over the Core Fitness because of the latter's 50lb. max limit. I am reluctant to buy the Nuobells, however, for my reason above.
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct, wouldn’t recommend having the nuobell dumbbells vertical for exact reason you stated. The amount of weight on the nuobell and small plastic grove area that keeps them all connected could easily break eventually. The core home fitness are lighter and have a much bigger grove area so much smaller chance of that happening. The nuobell can become the best adjustable dumbbell with minor tweaks which I’m sure they will do in the future which is why I’d personally wait on them.

Can you link me bro, so I can check it out? Only ones I’ve seen by them are plate loaded screw on ones which are super time consuming and can’t really rest the bar on your leg without stabbing it. Like the Yes4all dumbbells I had for like 2 days before selling. If that’s what you mean I’m glad it’s working for you. I just hate unscrewing all 4 sides between each set, putting on or pulling off all the plates and then screwing all 4 sides back on before the next set. You also have all these plates laying all over and have to count the weight to make sure it’s what you want to lift. It is a nice way to get a lot of weight for cheap, just to time consuming between sets for me. Thanks for watching bro!

So it sounds like they use add on plates like I mentioned but instead of the screw on style it uses mini collar to hold plates on? If so I could see it being a little quicker then screw on but a lot more dangerous when you turn it sideways the plates could push the collar right off.

I say Powerblocks are the best deal since they're the most affordable dumbbells and are long lasting. I've heard of people having the older models for over 10 years. They also have 5 year warranty compared to other makers only providing 2. And the 90lb option is a good enough weight for most people. Core Home Fitness I've seen reviews of people claiming the dumbbell plates are hold by some type of glue substance? So I can imagine the life span won't be as much as PB's or even Bowflex probably. But that's just an assumption. They are however, the most convenient dumbbells out there. The biggest problem for me is that they only have a 50lb option. Nuo's are kinda a ripoff. You're paying $750 for only 80lbs, when you can get Bowflex 90lbs for $650 or PB Elites for $570 - 90lbs.

I've heard of people having the powerbocks for many years no issues also. A guy commented the other day he's had his core fitness dumbbells for 6 years which is the most I've heard of and has no issues and love them still. These are good however the issue I find is these only go up to a certain weight of 50-60 Ibs however Bowflex and power blocks go up to 90ibs and Ironmasters even further. If you're covering your 90Ibs in adjustable you then don't need many dumbells after this point you can get a set of 100Ibs and 110 Ibs dumbells and you're pretty well covered especially if space is an issue. It will also keep the cost down as well. Good video and good comparisons.
@MattTolbers
@MattTolbers 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Richard, I agree if you're really tight on space and need to go up to alot more then just 50lbs Core Fitness dumbbells might not the best choice. For me personally the Ironmaster are just to time and energy consuming to switch the weight plates on all 4 sides between each set. Also the safety issues where the pin could over tighten and instantly become lose which dumps all the plates was a huge concern for me. I have heard recently that Ironmaster may be sending new weight pins to people who are having those issues which is good news though. The Bowflex 1090 are super bulky and awkward for many workout, especially using them for lighter workouts because you still have the whole handle no matter what weight you chose. Not really a fan of the Powerblock design in general or the adder weights it uses. I will say many people have told me they've had them for 10+ years so they do last along time. Adjustable dumbbells aren't meant to drop, which is why when you start getting to heavier weights like 90lbs it get harder to set down gently or put back on the stand correctly which can result in accidently being to ruff with them and breaking them. Not saying this will be an issue for everyone, just a general truth. That's why I love the Core Fitness dumbbells for the lighter lifts because it saves space and it has the quickest design to change weights, while staying compact and similar shape to real dumbbells. Much easier to set down 50lbs after a big set then 90lbs so less likely to drop or set back on stand to hard. In conjunction with real dumbbells that you can drop for the heavier lifts. Now being super tight on space and needing to lift alot of weight I'd say Core for the lighter lifts in conjunction with Ironmaster for any workouts over that since they can go up to 165lbs with add on plates. Just make sure you don't have issues with the pin, if you do make sure to contact Ironmaster and get one that doesn't come lose easily. If I only had space to get one set of adjustable dumbbells and 90lbs was enough I'd go Powerblocks
@274halo
@274halo 3 жыл бұрын
@@MattTolbers Yeah definitely some valid points, I use the Bowflex 1090 and agree it is bulky, but was one of the few dumbbells available up to 90Ibs. Was gonna look at Powerblocks but here in the UK at current times, even last year stock was low and overpriced. A lot of places sell it at base unit of 50ibs then you need to go by the two more extensions on top of that, making it super costly. Had an eye on Ironmasters but find it's so much easier to have a visual weight representation and simply a lot quicker to go up and down in weight on Bowflex and like the Nuobell and Core ones. Yeah these dumbells are not meant to be dropped so this is a valid point since a heavier dumbbell needs more strength and control. It would be nice if companies like Core and Nuobell could offer up to 40kg since the overall design and functionality is very good. Also, it probably would not look as bulky either since these styles closely match a dumbbell more.
