I experienced that show stopping performance. It was my first trip to NYC. My first Broadway show. It changed my life. The audience initially held their breaths and gasped followed by thunderous applause and a standing ovation. My goosebumps had goosebumps and tears were streaming down my face. I get emotional today thinking about it. I remember almost nothing after that performance. ❤

if they bring Cats the Musical back to Broadway they should get Betty Buckley as Grizabella , Stephen Hamm as Growltiger , Brian Blessed as Bustopher Jones , Dianna Agron as the insidious Griddlebone , Frank Thompson as the wily Rumpus Cat , Kenneth Ard as the Wicked Macavity and Kevin Cahoon and Stanley Wayne Mathis as Macavity's hench rats and Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy . cause Macavity in the Cats Revival looks like a cat that has been shaved and it wasn't scary enough . just silly . He looks like a Ginger cat version of Mr. Bigglesworth from Austin Powers when Mustafa made an error on cryo freezing process on Mr. Bigglesworth

I really respect Betty as a performer. But I have a different take on the story. Memory was just another song in cats, hence it didn't stop the show. Then something happened. Barbra Streisand released the song memory, it was vocal perfection. Immediately it was the song of the song, people went to watch cats just to hear the song live, thus the song became the show stopper. I think if u research on the timeline, this would be accurate. Remember before Sunset Boulevard opened in London or anywhere else, Andrew Lloyd Webber offered anything Barbra wanted from the score. Barbra picked 2 songs for her back to Broadway album and those are also the 2 show stoppers of the show.

Weng Fong : if you are a singer, give Memories a try. This is a very difficult song to sing.

Who should I trust more? You who claims Barbra Streisand supposedly made it the show-stopper first in an album or the woman who originated the role of Grizabella who made it the show-stopper during live performances? I trust Betty and her explanation of how it became the show-stopper. Oh, and Barbra's is not vocal perfection. I've heard her rendition numerous times.

Well, I never heard Betty sing Memory, but I did hear Barbra Streisand sing it and I always thought Barbra was the main person singing it. Not everyone back in the day (or even today) had the chance to hear anything from Broadway. Not everyone belongs to that world, but almost everyone knows popular singers like Barbra. I only knew Betty from Eight is Enough. I had no idea of her Broadway career until recently as I was looking her up. She will always be Abby to me. She was perfect in that role. She's an amazing person overall. There is much more to her than I ever knew. Love this interview with her.

Nope. I was there. Betty stopped the show. When she finished there was dead silence for a moment then a collective gasp followed by thunderous applause and a standing ovation that lasted many minutes. I’ve never experienced anything like it before or since. It changed my life. Thinking of it even now I get emotional.
