Career Q&A with Chita Rivera. Moderated by Richard Ridge, BroadwayWorld.com.
Panelist Bio
An accomplished and versatile actress/singer/dancer, Chita Rivera has won two Tony Awards as Best Leading Actress in a Musical and received eight additional Tony nominations for an exceptional 10 Tony nominations. On Friday, November 6, 2015, WNET/THIRTEEN will air the Great Performances special Chita Rivera: A Lot of Livin’ To Do, a retrospective on her extraordinary life and career nationally on PBS. She recently starred in The Visit, the final John Kander/Fred Ebb/Terrence McNally musical directed by John Doyle and choreographed by Graciela Daniele on Broadway (2015), following the acclaimed production at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 2014. She starred in the Broadway revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, the Broadway and touring productions of The Dancer’s Life, a dazzling new musical celebrating her spectacular career, written by Terrence McNally and directed by Graciela Daniele and the revival of the Broadway musical Nine with Antonio Banderas. She trained as a ballerina (from age 11) before receiving a scholarship to the School of American Ballet from legendary George Balanchine. Chita’s first appearance (age 17) was as a principal dancer in Call Me Madam. Her electric performance as Anita in the original Broadway premiere of West Side Story brought her stardom, which she repeated in London. Her career is highlighted by starring roles in Bye Bye Birdie, The Rink (Tony Award), Chicago, Jerry’s Girls, Kiss of the Spider Woman (Tony Award), and the original Broadway casts of Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Seventh Heaven and Mr. Wonderful. On tour: Born Yesterday, The Rose Tattoo, Call Me Madam, Threepenny Opera, Sweet Charity, Kiss Me Kate, Zorba, Can-Can with The Rockettes. Chita was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009. She received the coveted Kennedy Center Honor in Washington, DC in 2002 and is the first Hispanic woman ever chosen to receive this award. In May, 2013, she was appointed to a special Kennedy Center Honors Advisory Committee. Chita’s current solo CD is entitled And Now I Swing. Her most treasured production is her daughter, singer/dancer/choreographer Lisa Mordente.

I saw her in person in "Mr. Wonderful." She had a solo number "I'm Available," which was great, but that's all I remember her doing, so it's strange to hear her referred to as the co-star. Of course I've seen her on film and in videos since then, but when she first walked on in this video, my mind flashed back to her at 23 and I felt pang of sadness; I can never quite accept that vibrant beautiful young people grow old. And as wonderful as these stories are, there is no way someone like Chita is going to tell you she couldn't stand some other dancer or choreographer. In the Robbin's biography "Dance with Demons: The Life Jerome Robbins," it's written that she did like Robins and she was one of his favorite. But the rest of the cast considered him Hitler's evil twin and tells of him being beyond despicable to Mickey Callan. I love that without actually saying it, she points out that Gwen besides being a great dancer had "star quality" -- the impish face, the quirky voice -- that something that makes one performer a star and another, with just as much talent in every field, a great second banana. At least that's my take on it.

Fount of gentle wisdom, bubble wrapped in joie de vivre. with compassionate kindness oozing outta her maestro pores. Yet every atom of her frame displays a zillion rehearsals' perfection, delivered in bouquets of genius ease. GOD probably grinned after completing this creation. Perhaps His grin is the glow we perceive from her? - Must be several thousand slivers hard won over the years. Those boards have been blessed. Peace be with you...Lukerdog
