Glad to see 'The Great Missdirect' get some love. The only thing "negative" ever about the album is that it was cursed to follow up 'Colors'. I remember at the time it came out all anyone ever said was "not as good as Colors", meanwhile people like me were jamming the album on repeat anyway because it was great regardless.

Definitely agree. TGM is a fantastic album. It was, at least IMO, when they really started to figure out their sound and tie it into the concepts/stories they tell. Colors is obviously a fantastic album, but yeah, I agree, TGM gets left in the dust sometimes.
@ghostrobot3714

This is the record that made me love them. It felt like they had fully realized what they had with this particular lineup. Alaska and Colors, while still great records, sound in retrospect to be searching for something they knew they had in them, but needed to further cultivate, at least to my ears.
@LouisR56
@LouisR56 2 жыл бұрын
@@ghostrobot3714 Couldn't have said it better, I think TGM is a massive improvement in terms of songwriting in their discography. Colors is amazing, but with TGM they really learned to write more cohesive and digestible songs, while maintaining the high level of complexity of their song structures and arrangements. TGM is a brilliant album.

It is very fitting to compare this to older prog rock because aside from being heavily influenced by them (see their cover of King Crimson "3 of a Perfect Pair"), they also wrote this album as a full concept and story. The drastic swings in heavy to melodic and back are in keeping with the story line. This is the album that sold me on BTBAM and I absolutely loved seeing this bass solo live.

This was already one of my favorite tracks ever, but seeing this in August 2021 when they played the entire album live was absolutely amazing. The atmosphere was electric (for many of us there it was our first live music in over a year and half so that’s probably part of it) but they came out and put on a really freaking great show and this track was a highlight.

One of the things I love about this band is that you can hear obvious influences but they take it and make it completely their own. Half of the time, I hear that clashing yet synchronized guitar riffs that is a dead giveaway for King Crimson but it's always done in an unexpected way. And the mashup of genres is so much fun! I would highly suggest the song "Fix the Error" from their latest album. It's basically a metal song with punk rock lyrics and big gospel energy. Such a treat!

If I had one band to tell someone like yourself to check out, it would be The Black Dahlia Murder. The song I would recommend is - I will return. They're one of the greatest melodic deathmetal bands of all time in my opinion. They've had a ton of member changes over the 15+years they've been doing it but the Vocalist and Rhythm have stayed the same. Big ups from Canada.

You said the words I have always felt about this band, "..of how musicians (BTBAM) can take you on a journey". I have felt it since Silent Circus on songs like Mordecai and Ad a Dglgmut. On Alaska, the song Backwards Marathon, I have always said "They lift you into the heavens and then drop you into the pits of hell.... and you love every second of it". My favorite band and I believe they forever will be.

That clean vocal section around 6:30-7:00 sounds like something Porcupine Tree would do. I love the variety you get with BTBAM. check out Voice Of Trespass from them. I know it's not the most requested song, but I love it.

Hey Geebz. I just discovered your channel by way of Draconian and then I was hooked at how well you get it with some of these amazing metal bands. I’m a musician myself of many years and appreciate how you can look past what others may write off so easily as noise. You are able to pick up on every single nuance and describe the music with awesome analogies. Love the channel and you good sir. As a new fan would you please please 🙏 dissect some Stratovarius (Finland). I think you would be just as blown away by their compositions as you are with Nightwish. After all they were a HUGE inspiration for the guys in NW. Keep up the great content Geebz. Mahalo! 🤙🤘
