"Axel F" is the name of the theme and it is Foley's theme. The variation of it in the warehouse scene where Axel and Jenny got caught is called "The Discovery." The Thriller jackets were a popular thing that year. They had lots of zippers with no pockets. Even kids in elementary school wore them. This movie came at the perfect time in 1984. It is one of the definitive years of the decade and one with multiple major movies and new hit shows. "Miami Vice" had just premiered, which is somewhat of a companion to this movie with the pop music (just as MTV had become mainstream), glitzy style, machine guns and cocaine smuggling. Beverly Hills use to be synonymous with rich excess back when only the wealthy and the celebrities shopped at places like Gucci.

This movie reminds me of my childhood. The black gentleman who played Todd, Eddie Murphy's boss, was a real life cop in Detroit. He went into politics as a Detroit city councilman. He was also allegedly somehow involved in a scandal involving the infamous White Boy Rick case when he was a cop. He never faced charges on that though because no solid proof. Saw it in a documentary.

Loved the reaction fellas! One of the things I don't think gets enough attention, is how wonderful Eddie balances humor AND drama. When he visits his "sister" to tell her that their "brother" is dead, I get choked up because of Eddie's delivery. His mission is so dead serious and yet he gives us a funny detective but his mission isn't a joke. I can't think of an example of a black detective that's funny but also tough and cool. That young kid is goin places. ;p

It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars as well Sylvester Stallone was the first choice to play Axel Foley, but had a falling out with the writers as he wanted a dark and serious action film rather than a comedy. The Beverly Cop series are absolute classics. I liked #2 better than the first. Again, very hard for a sequel to be better than the original. You guys will enjoy that. The "assistant" at the art store who can't pronounce Axel's name is actually Bronson Pinchot who plays Balki Bartokomous in the TV show Perfect Stangers, where he co-starred and it ran for 8 seasons. Very well known back in the day.

When Axel rolls up to the hotel lobby and the girl starts typing to look up his claimed reservation, the implication is that this hotel is FANCY, 'cause even the front desk has a computer. 'Cause this was 1984 and computers were mostly limited to certain middle class households but rarely in, I would say, most hotels or businesses except fairly large ones, and mostly only for things like accounting, and there was little to no networking as is ubiquitous today, probably not until the late '90s.

Did you recognize Rosewood as the stepdad in the Tim Allen "Santa Clause" films? The laid back Beverly Hills Police Force...you can see how they developed into the police force in "Demolition Man" The 'lemon twist espresso" art gallery assistant Serge is Bronson Pinchot. He made his name in the TV comedy series "Perfect Strangers" where he is a Grecian named Balki who comes to live with his male cousin in America. He went on to do great bit parts (some film, but mostly TV), like the interior designer in "First Wives Club" (a great film you two might like). Oh, and he's on Twitter, and he's just oddly weird? Modern art? Like Lydia's mom in "Beetle Juice"?

Serge the art gallery assistant was played by Bronson Pinchot. Bronson was great at doing non-descript European accents. When I was a kid, he played Balki Bartokomous with such an undeterminable accent in the TV show Perfect Strangers. I loved Balki. Fun Fact: Family Matters (with Steve Urkel) was a spin off of Perfect Strangers. I remember hoping that Balki would guest star on Family Matters and teach Urkel the Dance of Joy ("Now we are so happy. We do the dance of joy!"). But it never happened. ☺ Btw I hate to tell you guys, but espresso is often served with a lemon twist, wedge or thin slice in Italy. It's called espresso romano. But I adore your tirade about lemon in coffee drinks. 🤣

Love how Rosewood goes from naive cop here to a shotgun wielding badass near the end of the 2nd movie. Goes to show the positive influence Foley has. Also, love how you went from "This guy is so lame." to being horrified of him getting shot in the second movie.

Loved the reaction. I think you'll enjoy Beverly Hills Cop 2 just as much. Billy has gone through a major "transition" that you will love.

Beverly Hills Cop Axel Foley drops on Netflix this summer. Eddie Murphy, Paul Riser, Bronson Pinchott, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton are back in their roles from the previous films. Joseph Gordon Levitt joins the cast as a young Beverly Hills police officer who idolizes Axel Foley and Kevin Bacon is playing the bad guy.

This movie is sheer perfection. Cast, story, soundtrack! Just perfect. Victor Maitland is imho an underrated villain. He was as cold as Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars 💯

YESSS I love this movie, and what fascinates me is the fact that there is ZERO romance in it, especially between Axel and Jenny which is rare Now the next movies to watch are Fletch and the sequel Fletch Lives, I feel like a lot of people don’t know much about these movies but they’re gold mines

I believe the whole 'lemon twist with espresso' came about as a way to cover up bad espresso. Espresso was not hugely popular in the US in the mid-'80s, so I imagine there was a lot of bad espresso floating around.

Fun Fact: Foley's Police Chief in Detroit was in fact a real-life Detroit cop named Gilbert "Gil" Hill. Mr. Hill was elected to the city council and even became it's president in 1997, before losing a mayoral race in 2001. As a police officer, he was notoriously effective as an interrogator, able to get confessions out of several serial killers, including the investigation of the Atlanta Child Murders in 1979. He was a real-life badass even before he became the hardcore badass from Beverly Hills Cop.

I haven't seen this movie in a while, I almost forgot how fun it was,FYI the sequel isn't that bad,I liked the fact they kept the same characters. That's a plus for me.I hate when they make sequels and have different people playing the original characters. But this franchise did the right thing and kept the original characters, even the small ones. FYI great reaction another old eddie Murphy action movi to check out if you haven't yet is 48hours.

Great reaction. This is my 6th favourite movie of all time. I first saw it when i was about 7 in 1987, i loved it back then too. You clearly find most of the same bits hilarious as i do. In my opinion this is Eddie Murphy at his best.

Fun Facts: Sylvester Stallone was suppose to play Alex Foley. Damon Wayans was in this movie as well. Eddie Murphy was the biggest comedian of the 80s. Not only did he do stand ups & movies, he tried singing as well. He made a song titled Party All The Time with Rick James. He & Rick James were both in life. Please watch the following movies: Apocalypse Now Krush Groove Wild Style Beat Street Hollywood Shuffle

Damn. I was 20 back when this came out and I was a movie usher so I’ve seen it a hundred times. I hope you guys will do “A Bronx Tale “which I feel is a low key story of a young Robert DiNero ! And even the song played at the start of the end credits was none other than Patti LaBelle . The main theme was also a pretty modest hit and was played on the radio.

Fun fact: the truck they used at the beginning of the movie to plow through everything, they uninstalled the bumper and fitted a factory grade I beam to the front of the truck before refitting the bumper back overtop of it so they could achieve maximum damage.
