As a black man I can tell you that almost nobody black was bothered by Dan Akroyd in blackface. We thought it was funny as heck. Movies used to fight racism with humor by showing how stupid it was. Now everyone is way too over sensitive.

If you haven't seen it, next movie has to be "Coming to America" - there is some character crossover from this movie. And it's amazing comedy!

"The Black Face " was funny,.I'm a Black Man in my 40s. People take things way too seriously.

Trading Places is legit one of the funniest comedies ever. Such a classic, at this point. Eddie and Dan the Man absolutely kill it.

Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd were both so essential to the foundation of SNL.

I love the story of how Don Ameche was cast in the movie. John Landis wanted a star from the ‘40s, and thought of Ameche. His casting director thought that Ameche was dead, so Landis did some digging and found him, called him, and asked him to come in and read. He hadn’t made a movie in over a decade, and Landis later asked him why. Ameche had been doing local dinner theater. He told Landis, “Well, nobody called!” as for why he had not been working. And this movie kickstarted the second half of his career.

If you haven't seen it next you need to do Coming to America and see what happened next to the Dukes.

Eddie's first movie, "48 hours" is another classic.

If you guys like Jamie Lee Curtis, then I HIGHLY recommend you watch "A Fish Called Wanda", starring JLC, Kevin Kline, John Cleese, and Michael Palin. It's hysterically funny, and while Jamie is great in that one, it's Kevin Kline who steals the show!

I hope "Coming To America" is next. There is a scene that ties the two movies together. "48 Hours" and "Another 48 Hours" with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are also a good movies.

Ralph Bellamy, who played Randolph Duke, was a pretty decent star of Hollywood's golden age, though he tended to get stuck playing the forgettable "other man" who the leading lady would dump in favor of the movie's big star. It's nice that he got more noticeable roles like this in his old age (and don't worry, he was nothing like the Dukes in real life and would even only say the n- and f-words once due to how uncomfortable he felt about them).

This movie is the whole catalyst for Coming to America. It's so interesting to see how he doesn't have true friends once he is rich and that's when women throw themselves on him without getting to know him.

This movie always reminds me of my late mom because she would randomly say to me "is that your purse? Thats a nice purse." Even 5 years ago, Then bust out laughing. That part tickled her so much.

I don't know if you've seen Downton Abbey, but there it explains that even thought you can do things yourself, you should let people do their job, so that they can feel achievement and self pride. It's the butler's job to open the door. If you look, you'll see Louis waited patiently while Coleman (without hurry) put on his gloves, walked around and opened the door. So know how much effort you need to finish Harvard? Trust me, Louis is not lazy or stupid and full of himself - he can open the door.

The cop in the police station inventorying all of Winthrop's stuff ("What a hairline") is Frank Oz, who voiced Yoda.

Duke and Duke return a few years later in the movie Coming to America as homeless people in which Eddie Murphy's character Akeem gives the Dukes a big wad of cash as they lay on the sidewalk. After that 1 Duke says to the other, "Mortimer, we're back".

This movie is a classic

The blackface scene is an utterly hilarious bit that would absolutely not fly today because of misplaced wokitude. It works BECAUSE it is insane. Valentine comes in with a lunatic "Cameroon" accent; then Coleman with his wildly broad "Irish" accent. Then Ophelia as Inga from "Sweden" with lederhosen. So Winthorpe topping it all with outrageous blackface as an utterly unconvincing Jamaican is just pure gold. I am so happy that it exists, even if it never could now. Staggeringly funny stuff.

Some fun facts about some of the supporting actors: 16:28 Did hairline dude's voice seem familiar at all? That's Frank Oz. He was with Jim Henson and the Muppets almost since the beginning. For years he voiced and operated Fozzy Bear, Miss Piggy, Bert, and a bunch of others. He also voiced and operated Yoda. He is also a great director. He directed movies like Spies Like Us (another awesome comedy with Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase). He also directed Little Shop of Horrors which if you haven't seen, you definitely have to! Also, did you recognize the butler? That's Denholm Elliot, he was Marcus Brady in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Just to clarify, The original intent of blackface has a good article on Wikipedia which shows: "Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used predominantly by performers of non-African descent to portray a caricature of a dark skinned person of African descent.".... Caricatures are offensive by their very nature. They are meant to insult the target (person of African descent). Once people started to become oversensitive, they started considering ALL things of that nature as blackface... regardless if the intent was racist or not. This is part of the problem with today's society... lack of critical thinking skills. Instead of teaching kids HOW to think, they indoctrinate them into a specific FORM of thinking that is rigid and unyielding and overly sensitive about most subjects. In this film, specifically, he was not portraying a caricature, but a character and for a specific purpose which has nothing to do with racism. People getting offended, just like you two did, over things like this, is part of the problem, not a solution.

One movie that has always been one of my favorites even as a kid was Brewster's Millions. It's a hilarious movie with Richard Pryor and John Candy in it. It's about a dude that is forced to spend 30 million dollars in 30 days or he loses his inheritance. It's brilliant, trust me.

Nature vs. nature, in this regard? I have a book from a business professor who once met a boy living on the streets in India, which had the basic principles of business better down than some of his students. So Valentine being able to do Winthorpe's job is not that unrealistic. BTW, said professor has gotten into business as well and is in what he does rather successful. Mostly by questioning 'that's how it's done'. Not a millionaire mind you, but his first niche he created has been profitable for the last 30 years. And he still teaches. The way his business goes does not need much oversight and is extremely difficult to beat even by large companies.

It wasn't, that they didn't care. It was, that back then all races, black, white, and East asian, thought that Dan Aykroyd playing a Jamaican was hilarious. People weren't so politically correct or thin skinned back then. They had a sense of humor.
