Check out Coby's first time watching Beverly Hills Cop movie reaction.
Supercut of Coby's reaction to Beverly Hills Cop and its sequel, Beverly Hills Cop II.
Eddie Murphy's mega-movie star status was secured after 48 Hours when he played the iconic role of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop.
Released in 1984, and directed by Martin Brest, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, Paul Reiser, Ronny Cox, Jonathan Banks, Lisa Eilbacher and a cameo appearance by Damon Wayans.
The sequel, helmed by the late and great Tony Scott, was released in 1987 and was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song "Shakedown". Starring Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Ronny Cox, Paul Reiser, Brigitte Nielsen, Dan Stockwell, Gilbert Gottfried, and a cameo appearance by a very young Chris Rock.

This is one of those rare R rated comedies from the 80s where the lead actor and supporting actress don't go to bed. There are movies where that works, but it would have complicated everything. I really like Axel and Jenny's relationship. They're friends, and Axel is your standard young, horny guy, but they're not trying to sleep together. The movie keeps the focus where it belongs and it works to the movie's benefit.

Axel using the alias "Richard James" is a nod to '80s Funk/R&B icon Rick James, who was writer and producer of Murphy's 1985 Pop/Funk album "How Could It Be," which included the hit single, "Party All the Time." Also, the entire dialogue about the parking tickets was improvised by Murphy and Gottfried. Dean Stockwell (Cain) also played Al Calavicci on Quantum Leap.

YES!! One of the funniest action comedy movies ever made! Originally, Sylvester Stallone was going to star in the film and even did rewrites to the script, as he wanted the film to be darker, violent and more action packed. When Paramount executives read the script, it was rejected and Stallone turned his script into the 1986 action thriller COBRA.

The single red emergency lights on top of the Detroit cop cars were called "gum ball" lights, i.e., they resembled gum ball machines. They are still available but are smaller & more aerodynamic. If you enjoyed "Beverly Hills Cop" then you have to watch "48 Hrs." (1982)with Eddie Murphy & Nick Nolte.

The reason Bogomil had Taggart and Rosewood following Foley was because Foley was out of his jurisdiction, investigating a crime without the permission of local law enforcement. They couldn't just have him running around without authorization. Since there was no active investigation into Maitland at that point, all they had was a harassment complaint against Foley (as far as they knew he was the one in the wrong).

I remember hearing that, a few friends were truckers. The single light vs light bar seemed to be a regional/financial thing. They all started out single light (or bubblegum machines) and later transitioned to the light bar. Depending on how well the local PD or sheriff's office was doing probably determined how quickly they made the change. The ones they have now are almost indistinguishable from a luggage rack.

Gil Hill, who played Inspector Todd, was the Inspector in charge of the Homicide Division in Detroit during these two films. He had risen to national prominence through his ability to obtain confessions, as well as his participation in the task force investigating the Atlanta child murders eventually linked to Wayne Williams. After he retired, he moved into politics, becoming a councilman and having an unsuccessful mayoral run. In 2016, an allegation was made by a former hit man that Hill had tried to pay him $125,000 to kill drug dealer and FBI informant "White Boy Rick" Wersche, Jr. to avoid uncovering corruption in the Detroit PD, detailed in the documentary "White Boy".

From there he went on to do other great movies like The Golden Child, Coming To America, Harlem Nights, Boomerang, and The Nutty Professor 1&2. Mikey's death really hits people in how unflinchingly the cold-blooded murder was shown. The first movie was at the forefront of pop culture at the time, from the soundtrack to happening at the right time in Eddie Murphy's career, in a year that was heavy with pop music in soundtracks and in the mainstream. It came a year after the "Thriller" video while MTV was expanding, "Footloose," Ghostbusters, Purple Rain, and the beginning of "Miami Vice". The style of the sequel is a result of how impactful "Top Gun" was. Producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer clearly wanted Tony Scott to do what he did with "Top Gun." Being a baby boomer in the 1980s might have some perks, but you might have a better appreciation of the 1980s had you been younger and without adult responsibilities, like born in the late 1970s. It was excellent for kids regarding toys, arcades and video games, the thrill of early MTV, cartoons, and kids movies.

fun fact the public/trucker slang for the big single red or blue light on top of the cop cars back then were called Bubble Gum Ball Lights...because they looked like/resembled a Bubble Gum Machine.

I think the big, janky-looking cop lights on the Detroit cars might be accurate for the time. But mostly I think they wanted to emphasize that everything in Detroit, including the police, is old and run down, compared with Beverly Hills where even the police department is lavishly funded and high tech.

I also appreciate a show it launched called _Family Matters._ The actor's name is Bronson Pinchot and he played Balki Bartokomous.

@3:29 - Yes, that's what "cop lights" on their police cars looked like until fairly recently (1990s and later). There was a nickname for those lights - bubble gum machines - because they resembled, well, you guessed it. You don't see many bubble gum machines around these days that actually dispense bubble gum, but that's their legacy - LOL 🤓

I remember as a kid when this was premiering here in Finland. Me and my twin brother (8 years old) wanted to go and watch it. 😬 They did not let us in to the cinema even thou our mom was with us. It was a bummer. Luckily our parents got VHS player later when those were new and got to watch it as VHS release 😆

47:26 "Why doesn't he just park the car somewhere safe... park the car somewhere safe, and... then hide out, then go to Beverly Hills and he's deep undercover so nobody can look for him and that's fine?" I think they were making a joke about 1980s Detroit not _having_ any safe place to park a Ferrari. You either kept it moving, you drove it to another city, or you let it get stolen.

Those outfits you recognized as MJ, Eddie Murphy wore in his Raw comedy tour. He was more famous as a standup comedian than an actor. He had a really hot start to his movie career. 48 hrs, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. Three home runs.

22:15 "Lieutenant's bad." The lieutenant has higher-ups breathing down his neck. And it's a defining trait of _every_ good protagonist that he be at odds with the authorities. If he _is_ the authorities, this means he has to be at odds with his immediate superiors. Not necessarily because one of them is ethically crooked, just because it makes the story more compelling.
