Your expensive flute experiences mirrors something similar that happened to me in the 1980s. I was instructing electronics at a 2 year community college and attended a lecture by a PhD chemist about violins, various chemical theories, and their wood structure. He OWNED and brought with him a Stradivarius violin he had purchased some years earlier when they were "cheaper" and allowed anyone to hold it and if they played the violin to play it. I don't play violin (I dabble on flute and clarinet) but I gingerly held it and was amazed when I left a finger print impression in the varnish. He told me not to worry, took out a small cloth, rubbed the area and the impression was gone. He told me that the varnish on the violin never truly hardens. I'm now 75 and still remember the fear I felt thinking I marred a Stradivarius.

Gahhhh, thank you!!! I actually have wanted to draw/animate more in my past videos, but I always felt like I ran out of time. I recently made the decision that I'd rather put out fewer videos that I am super proud of (and that I feel are "complete") rather than a bunch of rushed, half-finished videos. I suppose that's the real reason why I appear to have retreated off of KZfaq. :) I'm actually still here--I just want to be proud of my content on my own terms from here on out. ^_^ All that to say: Your comment makes me feel so appreciated!!!!

Very fun chat. I was in Vangroovy, teaching kids and fixing student flutes at Prussin music. I missed the flute festival and Galway’s concert, had a gig that night. I can highly recommend taking apart an old flute and putting it back together, I learned a lot doing that. Just leave the pads on, don’t take any screws off, and be gentle removing the right hand keys. It’s tricky, and rewarding.

Hilarious stories 😂 . I was at the NFC in Washington DC,and took a master class with James Newton.After it concluded, I talked to him about his Muramatsu gold flute,he takes me to the Muramatsu booth and I tried a gold flute,beautiful..he asked if I was going to buy it, i was shaking and he was laughing saying I turned totally white , I didn’t buy it 😂🎼

My own flute horror was when I was 9 and it was my first year playing. I was ready to quit because all the notes sounded the same and I went to extra help with our band teacher and he immediately determined that one of the pins was missing. He put an elastic band around the key impacted and suddenly play. The reason why it was never noticed was because there were more than 10 of us in the regular flute class in the public school and it sounded bad.

This collab made me think of your old with with David Eric Ramos, the first of your videos I saw That then inspired me to teach myself flute Fast forward just 3 short years and I'm already in music school for composition, teaching people music and outright making and selling my own ceramic flutes. But if I hadn't have learnt flute so quickly thanks to your videos, I would have never have passed the audition and I wouldn't be earning a cent from my music. Just a pleasant reminder of how big of a positive impact you can have on peoples lives without ever knowing ;)

I actually would kinda maybe slighly LOVE to have a professional flutist's opinion on my ceramic flutes if you wouldn't mind too much (don't want to push anything but that would be SO COOL). I've only just started selling them and have had positive feedback from lots of people including a couple of my first year flute buddies and even a harpist who's first time playing flute was on one of mine (so cool to watch :D), but to have a fellow flute nerd but with as much experience as you give a listen would be awesome!

So good to see you!! Question: what is damaging about buzzing into a flute? That’s a trick we used to do in middle school band a lot and I never knew it was bad!

It's mostly that it's a LOT of spit that makes it into the barrel, and I had been told that that much moisture is terrible for the pads. Could be other terrible reasons too, but that's what I was warned about before my buddies taught the trick to me 😂 Thanks for watching!!

That whole conversation about a gold flute costing 10K USD... wow. In the irish flute world, the best, top-level instruments are around the 3K-4K mark, and it's more of a matter of preference if you compare it to a 1.5K-2K instrument, they re not necessarily strictly "better".
