Before “American Idol,” “The Voice” or “The X Factor,” there was Amateur Night at the Apollo. Based in Harlem’s Apollo Theater, Amateur Night is a talent competition recognized for launching the careers of icons like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Brown and Billie Holiday. But, before any of them became the music legends they are today, they had to face the wrath of one especially hard-to-please audience. Enter C.P. Lacey. For the past 30 years, he’s reigned as the Apollo’s resident “executioner,” kicking contestants offstage when the “booing” gets too loud.

apollo theater amateur night, where acts come to bomb. if ya get booed off the stage hold your head high and realize that ya just have more work to do, you wouldn't have been on the stage in the first place if there wasn't any value in your performance. they aren't going to put a singer on stage who doesn't know how to sing, they aren't going to put a dancer on stage who doesn't know how to dance. if you are up there on stage you have shown the apollo already that you got some skillz, you just gotta learn how to pay the billz.

I literally live 2 blocks from the Apollo Theater and I have never been there before, I know what the show is about but never been interested in attending. I guess is time to give it a try.

Esto es mas antiguo, de hecho creo que desde que se inventó el teatro siempre estuvo un trabajador listo para sacar a alguien del escenario por tener bulla o quizas pasarse mucho en su acto, se ven en caricaturas como un simple gancho largo listo para jalar a la persona, en ese tiempo no habia empatía xD; ahi salian los tomatazos jaja Pero en tiempos modernos lo convirtieron en un personaje como vez aqui y el chacal que hace cómica la escena c': y son mas compresivos a la hra de cortar el acto - w-

I remember being about 12 years old and watching Lil Wayne in one of his first performances with bird man on Showtime at the Apollo at like 3:00 a.m. He must've been about the same age as me.

Fruit500 You know you might actually be right. There has to be video of it somewhere it was at the end of the show I think when they bring out up and coming artists and I think birdman was there specifically to show of his new protege, Lil Wayne.
