Growing up in Harlem without a father. Sandman was the father of the neighborhood. Took the block to our first Yankee game. Was a coach for each one teach one too. Very active in the community to help the youth. I sent this video to his only son Jr and he's so delighted to have his father honored. We appreciate the love y'all giving to a great man. I remember the day I met him Garvey Park. I was somewhere between 8 and 10 years old and there was an event in the park that day. My father would to take me to events celebrating our African and African-American heritage every chance he had. The look of awe and Joy on my father's typically stoic face, made me smile. I had been taking tap lessons for almost two years at that point, but the three-step (as childhood me has named it and never bothered to look up) and heel click that I learned from him on a summer day in 1990-something ain't left my repertoire yet. Foot note (no pun intended): my Dad took it a level up and learned to double-heel click that day. Something I still can't easily do. Thank you for giving me and Pops a memory we both value to this day, as family, as artists and as fans; Much obliged Mr.Sims ✊🏾😌

I loved Showtime at the Apollo as a kid. I loved the acts that came, but I couldn't wait for amateur night because that Apollo crowd was ruthless!! Sandman would push them off stage and do his dance set to get the crowd back in order. Then I remember that old lady that sat in the front row every show and woukd run up to the stage when the artist for the night came out. Man, I miss that show!! It was for us, by us!!

I used to tap for 10years in the 80s, so my mom took my sister and I to see that movie TAP with Gregory Hines in the theater. I also remember that episode where he was on the Cosby show and would *CHALLENGGGGGGE!!!* Cliff; but I never knew he was the same guy that'd shuffle acts off the apollo stage with that broom. Nice episode to tell us a little bit more about the history of this man and his talent.

I used to live on 118st and Lennox ave in the 90's . I used to see this old man riding a small bike, he would ride down to the corner store on 118st and Lennox, all the old timers would wave and say hello. I wondered who was this dude, why all these guys know him. So I asked a couple of old timers , who is this dude. They told me that's the guy that would escort you off the stage and the apollo if your show was weak. The said he was a know hoofer back in the day, they called him sand man. One thing I can say for sure I've seen quite a few entertainers in Harlem. I mean guys who paved the way for so many others. Sand man is just one in a long list. What a charismatic character. R.I.P. brother.

This was a great story for You to tell...I remember seeing that scene from his younger days when he was dancing with that young lady , probably around the time ...I did a college paper I did on Black Vaudeville performers and the Chitlin Circuit as well as the racism they faced as they tried to transition to mainstream nightclubs, TV shows, and movies...the Apollo Theater should have never been shut down...it was a American institution ...not just for people of Color...it was the launching pad for entertainers who left a impact worldwide!
