Thanks for sharing, Greg. It looks like those calves were really unable to get to the round bale at all. I wonder if that feeder is designed around a very high quality hay product so that the cattle could be convinced to eat more of it? Would you say you're feeding a premium hay product, or more average?

Hi Josh. I’m not sure about that. From my research the entire motivation behind the design was to prevent hay waste. In my area we call the prairie hay. It’s just native blue stem grass from the flint hills of Kansas. Decent grass, but nothing that would be considered horse quality or expensive. The calves get some but at the end of the bale everyone is struggling. Thanks for watching!

We raise American Aberdeens, same size as dexter and what work for (us) is the feeder from tarter with the skirts, not much hay wasted because they're so small that they start eating from the outside all the way to the center, then when that happens we lift the ring and they finish the leftover that is on the center and after that we just place another round bail in a different location, a little bit more tedious but you can see new grass sprouting from the previous locations. Ps: the tarter ring feeder with skirts is also like 8ft in diameter but it works fine because the bail of hay tends to expand once they start pulling on it

Thank you sir. I will take a look at that one. Is it a closed bottom model? I’m sure tater makes a few different ones? Thanks for watching.

I had put plastic pallets in the bottom of mine to fill the bottom void to prevent that build up and waste that can happen. I do go out and tip the pile over once it gets to that point and my herd gets its cleaned up before putting the next bale out. I would be interested in buying it from you if you would want to get rid of it.

Hey Tony. I might be interested in selling it. Not positive. Was going to go look at some tarter ones that were recommended. Do you not have the situation with them not being able to reach the middle?

@@dexterranch I have to go knock the leaning tower of hay over and sometimes use a pitch fork to move some of it towards the sides. Not ideal with the smaller frame but still way less hay on the ground than any other feeders I have used. My other problem with other feeders is that once the bale gets down far enough the smaller animals start to climb in the hay to sleep on it and urinate on it thus ruining the bale. I've never had one get in the Bextra feeder.

Was wondering how that was working out....................I have yet to find one that works really well for Dexters, as I probably mentioned I have been processing my hay and feeding it like we would small squares in our bank barn in our full length feed bunks..............Because of world affairs and disasterous energy policy, I am back to feeding out whole rounds in feeders to conserve fuel/$$$ that will be better used putting up the hay this summer. So I need to come up with something, the waste drives me nuts.

@@dexterranch There are some close to me, J and L haysaver being one, similar to yours, with that said, guys I know have them and they are not for Dexters and I don't think they work well with my 5x6 bales, since most run 4x5 or 4x4 here. I will have to throw something together this spring, I don't see fuel going down so its back to whole bales in a feeder for me.

Try a Diller or a Stoltzfus. Pricey but they work .

First year went well with no problems. I checked it several times on the really cold days to make sure it was doing its job, and so far so good. It’s been nice not having to worry about water. One less thing! Thanks for watching.

Hello from Costa Rica, is that metal or other material?

Hello Adrián from Costa Rica. Thank you for watching. Yes this is metal. Pretty heavy duty design, but will eventually rust out if not painted from time to time.

I think you should be moving the feeder.

I agree. It is not the fault of the feeder that you let it fill up and become disfunctional.
