Another great video. I have two suggestions: 1) On the graphics for frequency response, could you please zoom-in to more clearly show dB scale and/or overlay the graphics to highlight the differences? Sometimes its difficult to see the differences. 2) Listening tests: Years ago, a music production business from Colorado called Sonic Sense produced very informative KZfaq videos (still available) that compared 3 headphones (monitor speakers, etc) to one another with interludes of the direct signal. It would be interesting to employ your techniques borrowing from their approach. Thanks again for the videos, much appreciated.

Funnily enough i'm listening to this through the headphones in question, and the syballant increase is very very prnounced as a result, especially when you preview the monitoring. Even when you speak normally that emphasis is definitely still very present. I have a feeling this could be handy when dealing with a higher sampling rate, like 192k where you want to hear that high definition with a little more detail. I typically use these headpones for when i'm sequencing for comfort and to get an idea of the spacial information, then i switch to AT MX50 ATH for mixing, I feel they have a more balanced low end response and a stronger impression on the mono compatibility due to a narrower feeling scope down the middle. All open to debate but that's my takeaway. Great video.

Wondering what a good upgrade would be to the DT770(250 ohm)'s, as far as closed backs are concerned. Would the DCA Aeon 2 Noire be a good choice? What makes the DT770's kind of special is that they're one of the few closed backs that has a somewhat larger soundstage, wouldn't want to sacrifice that! :P

Hi from France and Thanks for your job review on all this different Headphones. I have actually the AKG 702 since 5 years - really comfortable and sound good for mix and master but a little too neutral and no much bass . I 'm looking for an ''associate headphone'' for complete my mix and why not , just for listening pleasure (in option) ;) Since 2 weeks, i shake again and again some reviews for make a choice between DT 770 Pro 80 / AKG K361 (not the K371) . and the Sennheiser HD 25 (yeah the hd 25 never die ;) ) but i have really not the possibility to test them IRL . I know the HD25 have a really percusif good good sound but comfort looks not really good sadly ( strong pressure and i have glasses :) The DT770 pro 80 is a big standard but , yeah i am not really convinced about his (no)neutral way for the bass and High frequency . Comfort yess but ... and the beautiful AKG 361( I saw your really nice review too ;) thanks ) The sound of K371 seems have a colour sound to much present and The K361 Yess really not expensive but , this one seems have a good neutral and look objective for mixing and just hi-fi pleasure no ? minimum good comfort too and bass quiet good present . Just right . I really don't know make a choice. Perhaps you have some more backup and advice for my case please ;) Sorry it's long Thank you Very much Dude Bye

I'm going to order the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohms and the AKG K-361, along with the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro and the much cheaper HD t.bone HD 815. I currently have the Superlux HD 660 Pro, HD 662, HD 662 F and AKG K-182 on my desk. Between those, only the HD 660 Pro is decent but a bit sharp in the treble. My reference cans are the DT 880 Edition 600 Ohms, which I love, but they're too quiet and too open for tracking and practicing.

I have a pair of AKG K240MKII but unfortunately 80% of the time I am not able to mix in a quiet environment. Would you consider the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro to be a good purchase for production and mixing/mastering? Could I then maybe use the AKG 270MKII for referencing to check if the mix is accurate and translates well everywhere or they are not flat enough for that? I mainly do trap/hip-hop.

FYI I have 770 80 Ohms and when I check my mixes on devices like phone and macbook it looks like there is a lot of high frequencies and lack of bass. For sure I need to mix in my DT 990:) So my conclusion about 770 for mixing is not a good choice as they don't represent high frequencies enough (it looks like highs are ok but actually there is too much high freq.) and they over represent bass (it looks like there is enough bass but actually there isn't). My DT 990 are more accurate in high frequency representation as they are 250 Ohms and open back. So 770 is for tracking creating a song and 990 are for mixing mastering.

Do you think the DT 770 Pro would be a good choice for Power Metal / Symphonic Metal? (Ex: Rhapsody, Angra, Sabaton.)
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
The 770 pro provide good detail in the midrange which can easily become over-saturated when mixing Metal in general, and particularly Symphonic… In the same price range as the 770 it is difficult to find a superior option imo. The sony MDR-7506 will also provide outstanding midrange clarity (even slightly more than the 770) but I find them more useful on sources when overhyped frequencies outside the midrange cloud the detail in the mids. For personally, the 7506 are fatiguing to use for Metal (some may absolutely disagree - the physics of our ears are all unique) and so I do recommend the 770 for Metal and in particular for Symphonic. I hope this helps out, cheers!

Hi which do you think are better for music producing(tracking and mixing): rode nth-100 or dt770 pro or audio technica ath-m50x. Also thank for including the music samples, this does help!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Glad the music samples helped out. All three will get the job done, but the DT770 pro are the most accurate of the three. The M50x however are good for referencing low bass and sub bass frequencies for genres such as EDM and HipHop. You can learn any of the three and get good mixes, but with the possible exception of EDM and HH, a flatter response can be an easier starting point.

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
I give the edge to the 770 over the p120 as I find it fits a wider range of vocalists and instruments (p120 can sound ab bit brittle on some female vocals yet has more bass response for deeper male voices). Both the at2020 and p120 are good microphones. To me the at2020 is a bit cleaner sounding but lacks the low end of the p120. For me it comes down to pairing the right microphone with the source and desired sound.

What is the best option between the 770 and 990 for mixing and mastering for bedroom production?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 9 ай бұрын
Both are suitable for mixing and mastering. As long as you don’t need them for recording, the 990 will provide superior soundstage performance but does have some overemphasized upper frequencies that are not quite as exaggerated on the 770. If recording is also part of your workflow, the 770 are the way to go. Hope this helps out!

I find the DT770 Pro to be very comfortable for long listening sessions. If you need isolation either from a noisy space or for others not to hear what you are listening to, the 770 are closed back and a good choice. If however isolation is not important, open-back headphones such as the DT990 Pro will help keep your ears cooler.

excellent video, what is your suggestion for gaming?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 11 ай бұрын
I generally recommend closed-back headphones for gaming as they isolate you within the environment even though open-back models have advantages for comfort and soundstage / imaging. For gaming I take three main criteria into account, soundstage, immersion, and dynamic performance clarity. Comfort is of course a key consideration for those long gaming sessions... Based on these my picks are: Budget: HyperX Cloud Alpha: Affordable closed-back headset with a superior soundstage, excellent immersion / directional perception, and strong / clear dynamics. (work with both 3.5mm jack and usb) Mid-Tier: Shure SRH-1540: These have a large but controlled soundstage, you are well isolated from the surrounding environment, and clarity is apparent from mids through tight punchy bass. High-End: Audeze LCD-2 Closed Back: Outstanding headphone for pro-gamers. Soundstage, immersion, and dynamic clarity are unmatched by any closed-back headphone I have heard. Note that the Audeze LCD-GX gaming headset is also an excellent choice. It is one open-back headphone that manages excellent immersion combined with the soundstage and imaging benefits of an open-back design. I hope this helps out!

Small diaphragm condenser microphones generally work well overhead indoors. The Lewitt LCT140 Air and sE7 are both good options. If your space tends to have reverb (echo) you could look at the Sennheiser e614 as it will reject more of the room sound. All of these are XLR microphones and will require an audio interface.

Yes, the DT770 have good extension in bass and sub-bass frequencies while maintaining detail in the mids and highs making them a good choice for both producing and listening to EDM. The M50x, another very popular choice for EDM, have slightly better sub-bass extension but slightly less detail in the upper frequencies. I would characterize the DT770 as accurate headphones for EDM that translate the content well with good bass response that is not overhyped. Hope this helps out!

All studio monitors and headphones have unique sound profiles. Some are similar and others sound very different. The DT 770 Pro is definitely crispy on the high end with that dip at the 3.5k and that high bass hole... Using them for years now, just replaced a set and the newer ones don't seem to have quite the treble boost of the 3 year old set... I use the Sonarworks Reference software to correct them to flat for critical listening but I definitely listen to the pure sound of the headphones also, to listen for any spicyness on the high end and for some bass anomalies that the natural sound of these can expose... Pretty comfortable compared to many others in this price range...

You may find the H6 has trouble driving the 250ohm to a level you are happy with, the Mac Studio should be ok. That said, the 80ohm have a (sometimes negative) reputation for not sounding the same as the 250 / 32 ohm versions, but in reality, the most important thing is to learn the sound profile of your headphones. If you listen to good reference material on the 80ohm to learn "how it sounds" on that set, you can then edit to the same standard and end up with finished audio that translates well to many playback devices.

If we are talking about the original M50, I purchased a set about a year after they were release...can't remember exactly when but I think it was around 2008-2009... I had them up until 2019 when the right driver gave up. I found them to have punchy bass, but rolled off lower sub bass frequencies. High frequencies were a little weak as I recall. When I picked up my first set of M50x the first thing I noticed was the sub bass was not rolled off which was good for checking frequencies below the response of my monitors, but like anything, when the sub bass got stronger, the mids seemed submerged although frequency measurements show the mids are pretty neutral. I wish I still had those M50 cans, I found them useful as a reference set. Have you used a pair of original M50? Would be interested to know your impression... (Sorry for the lengthy memories...)

The XM4, aside from comfort features such as ANC are meant to make music sound "pleasing." With enhanced bass response and the eq, they allow listeners to tune the sound profile to their preference, but it is difficult to achieve a neutral profile (due to limitations of the 5 band eq) that will translate across a wide variety of playback sources. Both are great headphones, but intended to be different. Hope this helps out!

How about 32 ohm version
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 11 ай бұрын
Aside from the 32ohm version playing with more volume vs the 250 ohm on the same headphone amp, the 250ohm have a bit more sub-bass extension below 50Hz whereas the 32ohm have a bit more punch around 100Hz. The 32ohm is also a few dB more boosted in the 7-11kHz range vs the 250ohm. These are relatively small differences but if your ears are sensitive to high frequencies you may prefer the 250ohm version. Hope this helps out!

hey whats a overall good and reliable and reasonably priced closed back reference headphone, i work in a noisy area. currently using the hd 400 pro and loving the sound except they let a lot of outside noise, i mostly make electronic music, Thanks in advance

A popular choice for electronic music are the M50x. They have very good build quality and solid performance across bass, mids, and highs. Another option with a slightly more natural sound (a bit more similar to the HD 400 Pro) would be the Phillips Fidelio X2HR. My budget pick (which is far better than it should be) are the OneOdio Monitor 60. They have great isolation, comfort, and their audio performance really took me by surprise.

DT770 is a great choice. Not as much sub-bass as the M50x, but I find the 770 are more comfortable for long sessions.
