This live program from Quincy Historical Society was recorded on March 21, 2024, and features QHS curator, Alexandra Elliott, reprising and updating a 2021 program exploring the stories of noteworthy women in Quincy history.
Abigail Adams is, without question, the most famous and influential Quincy woman in history. Her letters are a treasure to historians, a complex and fascinating picture of the mind of a Revolutionary woman, and an invaluable resource about the experience of women and families during the American Revolution. But she is not the only woman of note to hail from Quincy, Massachusetts. Her light sometimes can obscure the brilliance of these other women also deserving of our attention.
This program shines a spotlight on other remarkable Quincy women such as Anne Hutchinson, Ruth Gordon, and Mary Pratt, and introduces a few that have not yet received much attention, or that have resurfaced in the past few years, like Molly Dewson and Celestine Dorch. Then, Elliott outlines the ongoing research into women’s history at Quincy Historical Society, and some of the ways in which the Society intends to honor these women during Quincy’s 400th anniversary celebrations in 2025.
Thank you to Mark Crosby and the team at QATV for filming and editing this video.
