What can someone doing heart surgery teach the rest of us? Dr. Paul Fedak delivers a talk that offers a rare glimpse into the process of becoming of a cardiac surgeon. He explores with humour, humility and humanity what it means perform at peak performance, when literal lives hang in the balance.
Non heart surgeons will be inspired by his story. The UFO procedure he describes is a masterclass on how to blend together heart, mind and skill, in any endeavour, and a unique example of leadership in the face of uncertainty. Those looking to navigate towards peak performance in their own work individually or within their organization, in uncertain times will find this talk focused on mastery particularly helpful. This talk received a standing ovation at TEDxCalgary on Nov 3 2018.
A cardiac surgeon and scientist at the University of Calgary, Dr. Fedak is committed to the innovation and translation of new surgical therapies for patients with advanced heart disease. He has pioneered several novel surgical techniques, and leads a collaborative research effort with Northwestern University to better understand risk prediction around heart disease. Dr. Fedak makes an excellent point about having the courage to act in certain situations which I find to be one of the attributes that makes a doctor great one. This courage to act also involves the courage to act ethically. This requires a deep commitment to take action in difficult situations especially uncertain ones like Dr. Fedak talks about. Doctors take an ethical oath when they start practicing that they will do no harm. I think many times we often think about doing no harm as not harming a patient when performing an action. However, this no do harm idea also applies to situations when we decide not to take action. Doctors must couple their oath to act by certain ethical principles with critical thinking, empathy, and the potential consequences of not taking action.

this has to be watched more than once, and at different points of one's life, to be fully absorbed, hopefully.

“I have no special talents. I’m an ordinary guy” is very untrue, but extremely humble
