Beyond The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter. The battle for the future of air dominance.
An insight into new helicopters, such as the Sikorsky Raider, or studies from newcomers, such as AVX Aircraft, or Karem Aircraft, founded by one of the fathers of the Predator Drone, but also Bell And Boeing.
Learn the history of the Black Hawk, including Sikorsky's battle with Boeing, and the creation of the Sea Hawk.
Learn about studies for future wars, including higher speeds, and range, the JMR competition.
The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is a four-blade, twin-engine, medium-lift utility military helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft. Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972. The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61.
Named after the Native American war leader Black Hawk, the UH-60A entered service with the U.S. Army in 1979, to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois as the Army's tactical transport helicopter. This was followed by the fielding of electronic warfare and special operations variants of the Black Hawk. Improved UH-60L and UH-60M utility variants have also been developed. Modified versions have also been developed for the U.S. Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. In addition to U.S. Army use, the UH-60 family has been exported to several nations. Black Hawks have served in combat during conflicts in Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other areas in the Middle East.

12 years in Army Aviation working on and flying in UH-60s. It's been one hell of a good ACFT. Just a heads up. The V-280 Valor was picked to replace the UH-60..... Bonus fun fact. The Chinook is currently the fastest Army Helicopter.

@@knowahnosenothing4862 Speed, range, and payload won the day for them. Also they have been hitting all of their program milestones and exceeding them. If I remember correctly, Sikorsky had been having some issues. With the military looking at a war with China and needing speed and range, the valor seems like the best bet. I personally was hoping for the Sikorsky defiant but I dont think they could go wrong with either choice.

Other than the computerized glass cockpit the Sikorsky CH 53 A,D had the other enhancements in them over 50 years ago in addition with an AFCS (automatic flight control system) that allows hands off flying. It will hold altitude within 5 feet of set altitude up to 25,000 feet and within 1 degree of heading. The CH 53E went to a digitized system that is even more accurate. The UH 60 is a great AC because it is a Sikorsky. I have over 5000 hours in Sikorsky CH 53 A,D,Es and 300 hours in CH 34s. 700 of those hours were in Vietnam.

We flew up to Connecticut and flew back the first 15 Blackhawks. After 6 yrs in Huey’s and 7 yrs in Blackhawks I think the Blackhawk did what we needed in every aspect. Worked with the Rangers all those yrs, the bird did everything we & they needed. What a good bird! After watching soooo many of those Russian duel rotor birds die/crash with little gunfire/rocket fire in Ukraine, I would hope a U.S. duel rotor bird would be much more tolerant to gun fire especially the rotor blades! Good luck!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Ive recently retired from 40 years at Boeing, I think we should take a minute and talk to the troops the end users not these so called experts, and not some LT flying this multi million dollar cool tilt rotor AC (WoW for a 22 year old) the troops hate these tilt rotor AC's because they take too long to translate from cruise to vertical lift and back, Leaving the troops hanging their getting shot at. Years ago One experience pilot said he'd rather be flying in an old CH46, where he could fly in, bounce the chopper, unload and be gone before the enemy knew they were coming. He retired not long after he trained on the V22. He said he would prefer to fly a tilt rotor only into non contested zones. I know you don't get to pick your missions yada yada yada Senior leaders follow the Pentagons orders their not flying into some combat zone. Cost yea But what would the troops want. What do they really need is a 2 doors for quick exit, and the fastest possible in and out of the combat zone. For once i would like to see what the troops think, oh well thanks for reading my rant.

The v280 Valor has no such compromises with its huge rotors, big straight wing and only the rotor heads tilt, not the entire engine. All these add to why it looks so strange compared to the v22 osprey.

When I was in the Navy the ship I was on (LST-1096) we were off loading fuel and ammunition to troops up on the Vietnam DMZ. More than just often the North Vietnavese would fire at us from their hiden positions. I am sure it was probably one of these Bird Dogs watching over us. When the North was spotted firing at us the BDogs contacted the Battle Ship New Jersey and their 2000 lb projectels would wipe out the North's position. Then we waited a short while and again from a different location the Bird Dogs repeated with the same New Jersey results. Thank you Bird Dog's and New Jersey and sometimes heavy cruiser St. Paul when relieving the New Jersey.

We actually need both the V-280 Valor and the Raider, yesterday. The Blackhawk is an old design with a design flaw. But, we still have the infighting between the Army and Air Force. The army needs a raider like helicopter. The Air Force could better develop the Valor better. Both needs significant hard points and a gun to be self sufficient. And, they both need Network Centric computers to coordinate with both air force's other assets and army soldiers. The Valor is really an A-10 replacement. Swoop in destroy enermy assets that were not detected. Drop the troops and loiter with weapons to destroy incoming enemy troops. Then afterwards Air Force multi-role assets can hold off more distant troop. A war to protect Taiwan will be more like Vietnam where helicopters were vital, but where Air Force coordination was lacking.

Bell won the competition for the Blackhawk replacement, and i think it's the right choice. The speed and maturity of the design is right for hot transport. While i love the twin-coax design of Sikorsky, it just needs some more time in the oven. However, i would like to see it win the scout helicopter competition. Its stability in hover mode and compact frame seem to suit it well for scouting.

Funny, I flew (CC) in the Huey and thought prior to and after...It needed 1. More Power. 2. 3-4 main rotor blades (lift). Subsequent thoughts could be plug-N-play. Yes, with these diff's, it requires airframe strength etc...But a NOTAR rear...more fun. Fast is great but... Put it in the hands of a Guerilla (pilot/crew) with limited manual upgrades (NVG's etc...) The cost would plummet. Low/high tech...min cost, would screw up the entire industry/enemy (along with the high tech/high cost a/c). You couple them. The thought: No one likes the thought of attacking the U.S. (norm mil)...Why?: the 2A!!! "Behind every blade of grass in the U.S., is a gun!". And the ROE's for those civies are null and void!

During the Tet Offensive there was a brief shot of a helicopter park. The speaker said Huey among other things but my attention was drawn to the front view of a helicopter with two shafts at a small angle to each other. If they were turning in opposite directions at the same speed their blades would not touch, no reverse contra-rotating controls would be necessary and the tail rotor would only steer. Otherwise like a normal helicopter.

I hope they put secondary decent as a priority on this. When we think of helicopters in the military, I think we think of massive crashes that could have been avoided with secondary power in decent, somehow. I don't know how because i'm not an engineer, but even a tiny reduction in decent speed after damage paired with a tiny increase in seat and cabin compression would be enough. I assume the twin rotor design can rotate down in an auto gyration situation if it takes battle damage to one rotor in high speed flight, or, would it more often become a seriously out of control hazard to it's crew but also marines in the combat area. Maybe computers can auto compensate as long as single engine decent control is within the ability of the machine at most speeds. Hell I don't know. Maybe the point is the ability to leave the area on the remaining engine. Don't know what im talking about.

You explain very well what the problem is / might be from the users point of view . U see the engineers do not fly in battle those machines themselves. It is all Theoritical to them . A chopper went down . Oh ! Let's check parameters to see if we can avoid it next time ecc ecc. Good . But The boys died and no one took a hint on the useless death of our Youth when all this loss of family blood could be avoided with a Rotor delayed action that stores energy Kinetically to release at once in need Then can kick start a decent control at low speed A controlled Fall . It is so easy what u ask for and The Army should be DEMANDING A Solution like it from their Engineers . You are in The Exact Hot spot of the whole operation problem There is NO EXCUSE. NO Bloody excuse for Black Hawk down situations in our time under current conditions without even an enemy intervention we lose our youth our personal our girls and boys we just sent them in fire line half assed supplied just because Nobody sits down Proper to think tank around the matter and find The Tech chance that us on their hands to keep more ppl safe under duress during flight. The Engineering should be thought of as the vehicle will be under fire during operation. SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TO SECURE LIFE SAFETY UNDER DURESS SHOULD BE BIZ AS USUAL . NOT A CRISIS JERK REACTION . If the pilot knew how easy the engineers could save their lives ..... But do Not cause Nobody ORDERS THEM TO .... We as The NATO alliance we have capabilities that are in the sphere of fantasy for other profesional armies. We have Not an excuse to Not Push the borders of Technology integration . Show to the left hand what the Right does. Surpass security details to Co operate . We are Not the enemy we both work for the same thing and kept in isolation from each other . Not fair . The potential threats are Hillarious . At the END of the Day we have INTELIGENCE SERVICE for this kind of matters Exactly. Engineers should be free to correspond and cooperate towards the Best outcome Not cower in fear of exposure. Be Brave Be Honest Be The Leader and All the world works for you The Leader .

The issue for "designing to mission requirements" is that the "mission" is "subject to change without notification" (especially with political interference). Not just the standard SNAFU in combat, but the std procurement FUBARs invariably results in expedient "brief compromises" to facilitate political objectives (despite all evidenceto the contrary): a.k.a.,, politically redesign the brief to suit the aircraft you have constructed... all to frequent in the procurement processes of the American Industrial Complex.

work for an engineering company, we consul/design propellors, wings and other aircraft things. The problem with that is the weight requirement and the power it takes to push heavier things with smaller wingspan. Believe me if we had an engine capable of pushing enough power we would, but unfortunately a lot of current aircraft requirements have weight as a big factor in design. Although there are company's experimenting with that sort of enclosed rotor design but mostly for singular or duel personal transport.

Modern mobile rotor craft may yet be the intelli-hub for drones. Highly mobile, getting faster and highly maneuverable. Battlefield networks may require redundancy, and rotor craft may be part of that.

C'mon, The Big Army already chose teh Bell tilt rotor to replace the Blackhawk. My nephew was in on the government team that chose it. So hopefully the Sikorsky Defiant style will be used for the Apache replacement, fast and technologically superior. A TWENTY year timeline is ridiculous. do it in 5 years or go home!

How old is this? The Bell was selected for limited production, though Sikorsky has filed suit pushing against it. The scout craft hasn't been selected, but I suspect the Sikorsky will win for the scout craft, partly to distribute contracts between different companies.

Both companies better design a "foolproof landing gear" setup to avoid unintended gear up landings. If they don't then they will be making "more money from damaged, gear up landings". The tax payers do not want to pay for the damage done in gear up landings. Make the landing gears fooolproof !!!.

Excellent video, any criticism I have has nothing to do with the video work, simply me being me being :) If I was being pulled from a warzone I would bet my pretty hind-side I'd appreciate a Blackhawk. Do I agree with said war zones? Sketch my zero hind site as No. So major, major props to the ops teams, you are saints. Boo to the situation.

My one major question about possible future flight technology is if it is possible to build an aircraft that can switch back and forth between fixed-wing mode and rotor mode. If that is, at some point in the future, possible then it would be possible to build a form of a real airwolf that could go mach 1. Switch the aircraft from rotor mode to fixed-wing mode and then use the propulsion engines to push the aircraft to at least mach 1 with all of the weapons that would be attached to it inside of internal bays.

These dudes fail to recognize that you do not take helicopters to a war zone where you do not have total air dominance. A Helicopter is a horse. Marines have their own Airforce plus the navy to give them air dominance. The Army has to rely on the Airforce and Navy for air dominance.

The 280 is extremely vulnerable to small arms fire when in helicopter mode because the tilt-rotor mechanism is wide open. Compared to the V-22 which is protected when in helicopter mode. Need to develop a armored system that folds in to cover that wide open space as the rotors rotate to helicopter mode.

The coaxial rotor should solve a serious physics problem for conventional tail rotor helicopters. There is a built in speed limit due to the differential lift of the rotors, the blades sweeping forward have increased lift, the opposite side has decreased lift. The result is the pilot runs out of opposite stick and the aircraft rolls. Coaxial rotors should, *should* cancel each other out and provide balanced lift.
