Beyond the Horizon, recreating the rugged life of a Wild West Pioneer. My chuck wagon and I are on a mission to off grid homestead Oklahoma the way it was done in 1883. With a good set of Old West tools and a little bushcraft knowhow I'll hopefully survive the next winter.
IN THIS EPISODE: I can't believe I wasn't bit by that black widow spider! The third and final retaining wall went much smother than the previous two (done in previous episodes) because I had learned from my mistakes. The retaining wall is important because the walls that will be built upon them will be incredibly heavy. The process of adding the water and compacting the dirt behind it is a process I didn't really show with the other two walls but I did do it to those too.
The reason I added sod with grass to the outside is to stop erosion on that side of the wall, water coming off the roof had already started to eat away at a portion of the wall.
Also this was my first attempt at making char cloth and it worked great! I left it in the fire for about 20 minutes but I think next time I'll leave it in there a little longer.
Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up!
God bless,
Will

The homestead is coming along nicely. Thanks for showing us how our pioneering forefathers settled the frontier. You've recreated the realism of the American pioneer.

Blocking up the wagon to get it off the ground isn’t really necessary. You want the wheels to absorb moisture to prevent shrinkage of the wood. I haul my wagon down to the boat landing at the creek and back it into the water up to the hubs and let it sit for a few hours. I then I back it in farther to soak the other half of the wheels. It’s called “Sweating” the wheels. It prevents the wheels from drying out and shrinking and splitting. It keeps the wheel irons tight as well. I learned that from the wheelwright about 50 years ago when I had to have new wheels put on one of my wagons.

Just binge watched all 10 videos today. My thanks to you young man because I've been wishing for this exact recreation. I'm a 6th generation Texan currently living in Southern Oklahoma and a 40 year genealogist. The 1800s are my favorite time period. I've subscribed and am looking forward to many more videos. I rank this channel just as good as My Self Reliance. Even though he no a recreation channel, and my favorite gentleman Dick Proeneke.of Alaska. You're doing something I've always wanted to do since I first seen Dick and his videos in 1974. But I married 2 men who I thought I was crazy and so that didn't happen. Here I am 60 years old and disable and all I can do is watch and dream. Keep going young man. I want to give you a lot of advice that I have learned but I'll keep my thoughts to myself. I know I can be a mother hen so I'll shut up for now. 😂

Hey thank you so much I really really appreciate that. When I was stuck living in Los Angeles I watched a lot of My Self Reliance, he does great work so it means a lot to me that you would put me on his level. And I've probably watched those Dick Proeneke videos two dozen times each, I love them so much. I'll definitely keep going and don't be afraid to give me advice, I typically really really need it!

So you just wadded up some cloth in a Altoids can or whatever and threw it in the fire for 30 min for the char cloth? Nice vid!
@WesternPioneer
@WesternPioneer 18 күн бұрын
Yes the cloth needs to be all natural fibers and the can can't be air tight. I think Altoids cans are air tight so you'd need to poke a little hole in it. And I think I did put it in the fire for about 30 minutes. Thank you!

all my respect for this man, those were the good old days even if life was harder yesterday is it easier today? What social problems these globalists of nothingness are inflicting on us, everything is going into a tailspin today. thank you to this man for these images perhaps it would be better to undo everything to rebuild again in the simplicity of the heart and find a little more humanism, perhaps one day.... bless you all! let's come back to ourselves the greatest danger for us is to forget God it is he who will come to restore all things.

How long did you leave the char cloth box in the fire. That looked super easy. My great grandfather was a jack of all trades during the old west. He was born in 1870, and I think by the late 1890s, in the early 1900s, he worked as a carpenter. I have his tool chest here in the garage. It weighs 300 lbs or more. Mostly Stanley tools.
@Vikingwerk
@Vikingwerk 21 күн бұрын
It does not take all that long, I make mine by putting it in my charcoal grill after i’m done cooking, and let it char as the grill goes out, and don’t really worry about a set time/temperature. Just be sure to use 100% cotton cloth, no synthetic fibers, those melt rather than char.
@WesternPioneer
@WesternPioneer 21 күн бұрын
It was about 25 minutes but I don't think it would have hurt to leave it in longer. That was my first time ever making it and it worked good. And wow that's really cool, definitely hang onto that tool chest.

The cabin probably cost less than $1000 for the lumber and the nails. Eventually it will have windows, I've already bought them from a flee market for $100 and then I bought some big used hinges for the door, $10. The roof still needs some waterproofing though but the whole build has been pretty cheap I'd say.
