Confused about compressors? We explore some cool tones with a handful of comps old and new
Welcome to the show. We’ll stick our necks out and say that compression is probably the least well understood ‘effect’ of all when it comes to electric guitar. Good news - we’re not trying to explain it here! Nope, instead we get into some cool sounds and different ways to think about compressor pedals, starting with perhaps the two most famous of all: the MXR DynaComp and the Boss CS-whatever-number-it-might-be.
Having listened to those stalwarts, we move on to a small bunch of pedals with, shall we say, slightly more lofty ambitions. Without further ado, let’s get squishy. Erm, or not.
Enjoy the episode!

Over 20 years ago - as a novice in electric guitar technology - I walked into a music store and said I wanted a pedal that gave me more “sustain.” What I really wanted (without knowing it at the time) was an overdrive pedal. What I got was a two-knob Maxon CP-101. I used that thing for years - never really connecting with it. What I wish I had done was ask the music store people for a tutorial in different kinds of pedals and what they do. Grateful for the weekly tutorials and inspiration that I get from y’all! Keep it up! 🤘😊👍❤️

it's weird that they often call compressors 'compression sustainers' when they don't actually create more sustain compared to fuzz, od etc

I have a reissue CP101 and I love it! It's an optical comp so, to me, it sounds more natural than the dyna/ross style comp, but if you crank the sustain knob it can get plenty grabby.

@@popcorny11 CS-1 and CS-2 have nothing in common with CS-3, they’re OPA compressors in the Dynacomp camp. CS-3 is dbx VCA compressor in a pedal, with dbx/THAT chip and dbx patented circuit topology. The only other dbx-in-a-pedal that I know of is Maxon CP9 Pro + but I heard it’s discontinued (not to be mistaken with regular Maxon/Ibanez CP9 which is another OPA comp).

The CS-2 is my favorite comp for my rig/hands/ears. Long attack time preserves transients in a way that I find more natural and musical than a "clean/dry" blend. The "dry" signal in all pedal comps with a blend that I have ever encountered (all of them? UA1176, Ego, Cali76, Keeley Comp+, Deep Six, etc. etc.) isn't the acutal bypassed signal but instead is buffered signal tied to those compressor's level/output control which does color the "clean/dry" signal in my experience. Also, I run compression before drive. For me, this provides far more transparency, bandwidth, and more sustain, which frees up the drive pedal to focus on the amount of desired clipping...which ends up being less than would be used otherwise imho.

Really fascinating that in a studio environment you'd have these at the end of your chain going into your mic preamps. So the effect that most are used to hearing on albums or in the studio is at the end of the chain after all effects and amps (typically). I use the Cali 76 stacked on my lap steel board right up front for all things grabby and it works wonders on the sustain.

Oh my goodness, dear, dear mates. I've been having the compressor blues for a few months now, and you come up with this. Thank you so much. Your timing is uncanny. I've loved the Cali76 as a light, always on in front of the board (after fuzz) but it's been on the blink twice, now. First time was an expensive round trip back to the UK from California, feeling thrilled to get it back. Now it's on the blink again, hissing and crackling like an old '50s television. Haven't got on well with the Union T&T nor the Zenith. Have depended on a Fairchild plugin while on a crash course learning recording and mixing six songs. (inspired in part by Dan's EP) It's been the most reliable overarching plugin, especially on the mix bus but also on individual tracks (lifesaver on background vocals). Could the Airchild really be the one to chase away these blues with the light compression I've loved from the Cali76 on the board? Really need to hear one in person. It seems so silly but thank you so much for highlighting this pedal.

Great show, guys. I was kind of shocked how much I loved the UA 1176...to my ear, it sounded even more transparent than the Cali76 which has quite the reputation, and which didn't make a lot of sense since the UA is digital and the Cali is analog. Another thing about the UA is I believe if you buy the UA MAX, you essentially get all those same options (in addition to the other algos), plus EQ is available in the app, so you would essentially have a tone control with that. The J. Rockett was impressive but I got the sense that I liked it more because of the way it interacted with the amp than because of the characteristics of the pedal itself. It also seemed to be the one that sounded most like the CS-3. Anyway cheers. PS I literally said out loud to myself "Thank you, Dan" when he demoed the noise floor of the Cali because I play quietly enough that the noise floor of my compressor is a big deal!

People often talk of losing attack with compressors, BUT… you can also use them to boost the effect of the transient, by reducing the attack time so it let’s the transient through, then compressing the tail of the note. If you use two compressors you can use one for boosting the transient, to preemptively compensate for the second compressor that squashes the whole note then slowly releases it to boost the tail. Best of of both worlds, with less compromise than just mixing in Dry signal, although of course you can do this as well.

Yeah, I got a DSM & Humboldt ClearComp 1078 over Christmas, when I saw a place was having a clearance sale, for $99 while supplies last. I’d seen them for awhile, but at $250, it wasn’t really something I thought was affordable for how little I use them. Getting that ClearComp, has changed my view on them. I can set it for squishy, but I like the attack low, with the release longer, then I put the blend at 70%. It just adds a fattening, snd it really tightens up my gain tones, with longer sustain, at the same volume.

Awesome, literally exactly the roundup I wanted to see. Just started looking into Airchild this morning. Had been on the lookout for an Origin Cali '76. But they're a bit pricey in Europe. The Airchild is quite a bit cheaper even than a second-hand Cali 76 here. The compressor I'm using atm is the Dark Glass Hyperluminal. It's very cool for guitar, when set that way. The SYM mode can really smooth out an overly spikey bridge pickup when using a trebley amp like a Vox AC. I agree with Dan, I'd choose between the Airchild and the Tube & Transistor Lab. If the pricing/availability was the same, I might go with the LAB. But because it's cheaper/easier to get the Airchild, I tilt toward that. That tone control makes it ideal as a front of pedal board effect, especially when you are switching between using different guitars. Because you can set the level, and balance the tone quickly. I honestly thought that only the Airchild & the Tube & Transistor had a nice character. The Origin has a character, but not sure I like it. And UA pedals sound nice and transparent but lack character - I'd use them end of chain, or in a mix, as transparent comps, not as guitar effect comps.

My two mainstays are the cali76 and actually the PRS Mary Cries (an la-2a type circuit). The Mary Cries has been living on my acoustic board because it’s so nicely transparent and friendly sounding and the cali76 into a king of tone has been my main overdrive sound for about five years at this point. Going into a bassman, it’s simply the greatest drive sound I’ve ever used and I have no need to change it up. For some patches I use the king of tone after the cali and I think I may even have one where it’s king of tone overdrive, cali, king of tone boost or possibly the reverse…I forget. The only other drive I need is some species of tubescreamer…I have a mini on my big board and a palisades on my touring, carrying around, “needs to be smaller because it often sits next to my acoustic board” board. You know your professional life is starting to get out of control when you have four distinct pedalboards 😣

It’s effectively a dry level blend, adding up to 6dB of dry level. In this video because so much of the dry level was introduced, it was effectively being used as a boost rather than listening to the compression characteristics. The MIX control should be fully counterclockwise, and use the PEAK and GAIN control to experience an LA-2A on your pedal board. Then, use the dry mix control (more dry is clockwise, up to 6dB of added dry signal) to blend in a bit of original dry signal to taste, if you really want or need to. It would be nice to see a video where this pedal gets a fair shake against the others, it really sounds incredible!

I just love this episode so much! And am currently shopping out a compressor for my rig. My take away: I love the Boss more than I realized - and Davy G was using that instead of the MXR by some point in the 80's (but eventually went to the Demeter, I think). I am still thinking about Wampler's take on the LA-2. My understanding is that the UA's are digital - but that did not seem to impact the quality at all in this episode. They both sound great! I bought mic pres recently (thanks, Mick!), so my fun tokens are not enough for the Cali! Love to you all!

The simulation seems to be more than adequate for the task. The hoboroadie has a mental defect that requires I use a physical emulation, so I am saving up for UA's rack unit.

Thanks for the video. I know that'd be a different format, but I'd prefer to hear all the compressors with some 'sweet spot' settings, back to back, all gain matched (more or less). Without any commentary, played with two different guitars. I'd like to hear 3 first position chords played lively, a controlled arpeggio part and a simple melody line. It'd help me observe what each pedal does to the envelope of the signal, noise floor, any special characteristics etc. Then, I'd like to have your observations, how it feels, how you would use them, what you like and not, how to combine them with other effects or more compressors etc. And of course, that would be great to hear them in a mix. I know it's a lot to ask for, but you guys are the best. Cheers!

I wasn't able to watch the entire video, but one thing that should be mentioned (if it wasn't) is that you get two completely different effects by using a compressor pedal before the amp vs. using (even the same style of) a compressor on the way in after the mic. In the former you are limiting the dynamics of the signal the amp is responding to, so less touch sensitivity. That may or may not be a good thing, depending on what you want. In the latter case, you are keeping all of the amp touch sensitivity but then limiting the dynamics of that. They both have their pros and cons, and of course you might choose to do both. You could choose something grabbier before the amp, and then something with a slower response in the way in to put back a little bit of the attack, in a very controlled way. Or you might use something slower on the way in, for instance to get a nice swampy sounding rhythm part where it's pulling down just long enough after the strums, but then something fast on the way in to catch any possibly misses. And it has to be said that a lot of pedals are a best roughly based on or even vaguely based on the original gear. Anything claiming to be a Fairchild, for instance, when you couldn't even fit one of the ELEVEN transformers from the real unit, or the twenty'ish tubes. The 1176 had a big toroidal transformer I think. And any of the tube based gear like the LA-2A was running them at far higher voltages than any pedal could, I would imagine (given that I almost electrocuted myself building an LA-2A clone back in the day.)

Love to see an “ effect du jour” with the new Wampler ego76 - which seems to be his take on the best of what you covered here, also I think it was his vid that showed the diming of the 1176 rack “ led zeppelin “ style👍🎸

I have to say, I cannot imagine how one could produce an episode entitled, "Beyond the Dyna Comp and CS-3", and not feature the Boss CP-1X, tc electronic Hypergravity (and Hypergravity mini and SpectraComp), and Source Audio Atlas, the three most popular multiband digital compressors on the market. Multiband digital compression is dramatically superior to analogue wideband (or single-band) compression, in my opinion, even compared with units like the Cali 76, which has an HPF operating on a sidechain to reduce the tendency of the compressor to trigger prematurely on low frequencies. Although I do admittedly use compression more often on bass guitar (virtually always) than on guitar (only occasionally), after having switched to digital multiband compressors, I would never go back. Honestly, because compression is a tool that many people don't really understand how to use effectively, my first recommendations for pedal compressors are the Boss units, the CP-1X Compressor for guitar and the BC-1X Bass Comp for bass guitar. They are simple, straightforward, have visible metering, are reasonably priced, and are a leap forward for musicians.

I'd love to see the guys do the CP-1X and maybe other digital multiband compressors as a seperate episode... maybe comparing and contrasting with things like the CS-3 so we can hear the differences 👍🏻 😊

I hate to be the “you didn’t talk about MY favorite pedal” guy, but for years I’ve been noticing a distinct lack of Effectrode pedals appearing on TPS where they seem like they should be featured, but if we”re talking about compressors and the hugely popular Effectrode PC2A doesn’t show up, it has to be bc we’re finally going to talk about their massive, over the top, 3-tube LA2A that both Phil Taylors and Gilmour himself developed. Nope, once again completely MIA. ???

I’ve just been to one of their experience days and all I can say is that they are doing their utmost best to bring us Quality videos every week. Even though they are inundated with pedals from manufacturers hoping to get their product on the show, they just can’t feature every single pedal that’s on the planet. I think it’s important to get perspective on what they are providing and be grateful.

I've had dozens of comps over the years, Ross, Dynacomp, slide rig original big box etc etc and the one that's been on my board since it came out and is used almost daily is the Orange Kongpressor. Fantastic sounding, very versatile and doesn't cost a fortune. Wampler 76 coming soon. Good grief, it never ends.

Gilmour sometimes had three or four*, on his pedalboards. He was using it for sustain, as well as to grab the note, but he didn’t really get squishy until The Wall. *I think he only used them one at a time. Maybe each was for different effects, as the compressors were usually spread throughout his effects.

Ok, today we’re facing some of the most beautiful sounds in the World, past and presents…but, for me, UA strikes again and I personally found 1176 more “organic” and “musical” than the Cali76…but, as always, is just about personal taste…❤

Boss CP-1X is awesome (replaced my Cali76 & Keeley C+) Probably too much splitting of hairs when it comes to compressors as they are not that apparent like an OD would be. That being said , the CP-1X is not very “squishy” it’s more of a transparent studio compressor (it doesn’t cut bass like the Keeley and others do).

Great stuff as always, gents! Curious if either of you have tried the TC Hypergravity and if so, thoughts on its digital take on the compression world? Interesting in that, as I know you are aware, one can deep-dive into all parameters to custom tailor the effect and/or download other Toneprint presets (if desired- of course it is not necessary). Just wondering if you have compared one to higher-end pedals as demo'd here and in your other compressor videos.

I run an MXR Dynacomp 2000 series, and have for probably 30 years. I use it with gain slightly above unity so that it is slightly pushing, and the sustain knob at around 9 o' clock. The only person who can probably hear or feel what is going on there is me. Anything more and I don't really like what it does to the bottom end. But I would never want to be without it. It is an always on pedal for me.
