"Dhawno Dhanyo" from "Gumnami"(Bengali movie) is another gem. It is probably the most patriotic song ever ,written by Dwijendralal Roy. Gives chills whenever I listen to it.

The singers you're seeing are literally legends of Bengali music. The one who opened with a really deep voice is Kabir Suman. He revolutionized bengali independent music industry in the 80's and so forth. Rupam Islam, the singer with Glasses and big hair is the torchbearer of Bengali Rock. He is the biggest rockstar of Bengal and arguably the most popular independent artist of our time. You should definitely react to him. Try with the song "Vemular Chithi", The Letter of Vemula. You know Kaushiki very well. In the end, there was Anupam Roy, the leading face of our generation as well. I think he and the director Srijit Mukherjee revived art in commercial movies and prevented it from becoming a total shitshow.

The Partition of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947 caused untold sufferings to millions of people in the Subcontinent. People’s lives were ripped apart.

I honestly doubt if there is any poet in the world who has the same permanent place of love and familiarity that Tagore has in a Bengali's heart. If you're Bengali , you have remembered or hummed Tagore in your deepest sorrow, your most ecstatic joy, or in the middle of a workspell or even during a silent moment in your little balcony with your plants or the breeze or the moon. He is God's gift to us.

India's Nation Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" has been taken from this beautiful and magnificent song. A stanza has been used in our National Anthem. This is the full version of Jana Gana Mana, that you guys just heard. And yes they say Jaya Hey and not Jai Hind, which means victory to thee...!!!

Yes the film is intense! Rick, you r right that was Bob Biswas alias Saswata Chatterjee! The opening note was sung by Kabir Suman, one of the great singers songwriters composers of Bengal. Others were Rupankar, Lopamudra, Sidhu, Anupam, Rupam, Sraboni. You should watch the film! And the poem and song is by one and only Rabindranath Thakur (Tagore: wrongly pronounced by those British people).

The first paragraph of the song is in "tatsama" Bengali that is similar to Sanskrit.So it was adapted to national anthem that can be sung by any Indian..This particular song consists of the other paragraphs. This song kind of has a different meaning to Bengalis! I have goosebumps every time this song is played. Most Indians will feel the same if this is moulded a little to suit the Hindi pronunciations, but in its unadulterated form this is a gem... And yes, watch Rajkahini!!

Rajkahini in Bengali was so good that it got remade as Begum Jaan in Hindi - starring Vidya Balan and having some beautiful beautiful songs. There is a trailer that I had been requesting for the longest time before giving up. Your mention of SVF compels me to request it again. Please watch the Memories in March trailer on SVF- it is mostly in English. There is a beautiful song Bahu Manaratha in the movie that I simply love and am sure you would too.

Finally ❣️ This song, it's a strong emotion, at least for every Bengali!!! Only Tagore can do this wizardry with words! ❤️ Gives me chills everytime I hear it. This is the entire song of which the first stanza is the Indian National Anthem. The movie is amazing😍srijit mukherji is one of the best bengali directors of the modern era.. Though some of his recent movies havent been too good.. Like shah jahan regency, zulfiqar, forget me not, bahurupi and rekka.. His earlier movies were masterpieces.. Do watch them.. First of all kudos to the 2 subbers, Sayan and Arunima. You guys have done a brilliant job. Subbing Tagore's lyrics is quite a challenging/daunting task. Korbin, Rick your friend Kaushiki Chakraborty was one of the singers in this music video. You guys couldn't recognize her. All the singers you saw in this music video are stalwarts and living legends of Bengali music industry. And the director Srijit Mukherji and the Music Director Indraadip Dasgupta were also there in this video. They appeared on the screen on multiple occasions (giving cues to the singers in the studio while recording) This is a must watch Bengali film. And yes Korbin this film has 12-13 strong female characters and all the actresses gave incredibly strong performances and did full justice to the script/story. It was remade in Hindi titled as "Begum Jaan" (directed by the same director Srijit Mukherji) starring Vidya Balan in the main role but the Hindi remake version simply couldn't match the brilliance and essence of this original film "Rajkahini" Rituparna Sengupta (Lady Superstar of Bengali cinema) did the main role (she runs this brothel) in this original version and she just hit it out of the park with her performance and Vidya Balan just couldn't match her intense, impactful, powerful, moving performance in the Hindi version. This film is available on Amazon Prime.

Good movie. Not sure it's for everyone's liking. The opening of the movie is really strong. Also talks about human rights. Not just partition. The singers are all just awesome, some are independent artists, some vocalists from renowned bands, but all of them are just magical for me. Kabir Suman, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rupankar Bagchi, Lopamudra Mitra, Rupam Islam, Babul Supriyo, Srikanto Acharya, Anupam Roy, Annwesha, etc. Pardon me if I missed others.

It had been long you made it, I actually want to share something with you, when it was streaming in cinemas I went there with my grandmother, I actually brought her over there think that she must be happy to see such places of her childhood related...as the film showed the partion period; but her first impression was a comment that it was the place in that first scene where her family also stayed for somedays at that partion period. But when I saw the whole movie even now I repent why did I bring her that day to see the movie! She suffered again to remember the past. Even it was impossible to take the scenes of sufferings. But all was truly happened once.. I don't know you have seen the movie or not but it is our history of unfortunate, of loss which brings tears only..just feel how the people had to tolerate then just for surviving!!!

Most of the Indian films I own (and watch) are admittedly Hindi films, but this film and Kadambari are the two Bengali films I do own on DVD. Both are beautiful. This film was remade with Vidya Balan as Begum Jaan. The original is of course much better, though Vidya did her thing in the Hindi version.
