One thing I learned about this scene is that if you notice Uttam's pen was actually not working and instead of breaking the character he continued naturally, displaying his prowess as an actor.

Satyajit Ray explained that in an interview. He said it was all Uttam's improvisation and Ray couldn't even cut the scene because it looked so natural and perfect. That is just incredible to think or imagine how talented Uttam Kumar was.

I love the scene where he speaks to the heroine over phone just before leaving for delhi. He hardle speaks 4 lines. The level of gravitas which is on display in that scene is second to none.

Uttam Kumar was the first actor in India to win the National Award for Best Actor, for his portrayal of Anthony Firingee. He was (and is still) called 'Mohanayok', The Greatest Actor. Uttam Kumar has become a cultural icon of Bengalis. Satyajit Ray had himself admitted, that no one can replace Uttam Kumar in the cinema of West Bengal.

I m glad these movies are again coming in the mainstream through your channel. This movie was way ahead of its time. Ray said that he wouldn't have made the film if Uttam Kumar had denied to work! I also recommend *Kanchenjunga* by Ray another master piece and much different from his other works..

Nayak was released when I was very little. I saw this movie multiple times at Kolkata Doordarshan channel throughout my school days. Each time I saw it I understood a little bit of it. It is a great movie. Whenever I see Uttam Kumar I feel extremely proud as a Bengali.

No, Bimal Roy directed Devdas(1955) so your movie must've been directed by some other guy, some third guy not Satyajit Roy nor Bimal Roy.
