In this video, Dr Edwin Su takes a look at the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) System's 20 year history and outcome data from implant survival rates to opportunities for patients. In his closing slide Dr Su states that hip resurfacing can have advantages of THR including bone preservation, greater stability and a high activity level. He also says that hip resurfacing is alive and well for selected patients. There may only be a few surgeons performing hip resurfacing, but those who have experience with it are still strong advocates.

Right hip resurfaced at 48 years old with BHR by Andrew Shimmin in Melbourne, Australia in 2010, left in 2011 both going well with no issues. Still trail bike riding with the occasion get off. Both replacements made a significant improvement in quality of life, no more limping or hip pain. Thank you to Derek McMinn for his developing a world class prothesis and to Andrew Shimmin forhis surgical skills and excellent and continued follow up.

Firstly, thank you so much for posting and for your expertise. I had my BHR 2.5 years ago (at age 48)- left hip. I'm very happy with it and have an upcoming appointment this November for consultation to do my right hip. I'm 51. I'm curious why you said you had to turn down your patient for the second BHR; you didn't say why? It's so reassuring to have the 20 year data. Thanks! My BHR, implanted in 2013, failed. Have been procrastinating revision surgery as I am terrified, having been traumatized by the immense pain post-implant in 2013. And I live alone. Now, the BHR is has been recalled. As a small-boned woman you'd think my surgeon would've ascertained that bf the surgery. He knew about the issue concerning small-boned women which means so did S&N. I did not. I'll never forget the surgeon's one sentence to me when I awoke. With a clear frown on his face he said "you have small bones." And then left the room. WTH I thought? And, this particular sports clinic gave me no option except for the BHR, apparently considering my then-age of 58. I trusted them. Revision can wait no longer. I am afraid of dying. Thanks S&N for making my life a living hell.

The BHR has been recalled for both males and females? My cobalt levels are a 3.0 I'm concerned.

It depends of the surgeon. Same hospital same part to operate good surgeon . Good resultas. Same hospital. Same part. Same hospital. Bad surgeon . Bad results. I tell this , because it happened to a friend. Knee operation. One was done for a good surgeon. Very good results. Same hospital. The operation of the other knee was done by another surgeon . Very bad results. Another friend had operations on both knees . Same surgeon same hospital . The surgeon was very good . She is do happy

How awful. I'm 4'9" and Dr. Su was the only surgeon who would do a hip resurfacing for me and it's been AWESOME. 2 yrs later, my hip is back to 95% flexibility (and I'm pretty flexi) and can even run again, albeit short distances (< 3 mi) as I promised Dr. Su. I am so happy to be able to walk and not be in pain.

I am so sorry you're going through this. Please get at least your family doctor to order serum cobalt and serum chromium tests, as well as perhaps a 24-hour urine cobalt screening and maybe an echocardiogram too to check for heart damage. A MARS MRI should be used to check for destruction of tissue surrounding the implant (known as pseudotumor). If it helps you feel any better, I had horrible issues with my bilateral chrome-cobalt (same alloy as used to make the Birmingham) J&J/DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hips, and 7.5 years after I got them, I finally had learned that indeed the metals were the cause of all my health problems and found someone to remove the chrome-cobalt parts of my hip systems. Dr. Matt Morrey of San Antonio, Texas was a surgeon who'd never used any metal-on-metal hips, because his dad was an orthopedic surgeon who had warned him of the absolute train wreck these devices were to patients the last time they were sold, back in the 60s & 70s. Revision wasn't "easy" for me. I'd hoped it would be like hip replacement "LIGHT" surgery, but it was just as hard, BUT... I'm better. My health issues that plagued me for 7.5 years are GONE (except for the tinnitus and psoas impingement in one leg that happened in the revision surgery.. and I did dislocate the other leg, but it feels great now). All this to say I've noticed that the systemic metal exposure from hips like the Birmingham and the DePuy Pinnacle metal on metal hip that I had affect females much more severely. You might feel a lot better if you get that hip revised to one that contains zero cobalt-chromium. If I can help in any way, you're welcome to call me at 512.960.7788.
