I LOVED this video! It gave me a lot of good insight, and I totally agree about the message translation… It is hard for me when people who are getting into reading the Bible read the message, because like you were saying it is a thought for thought and not actually how the Bible was intended to be read, and I will definitely be looking into the John MacArthur study Bible!

I completely agree with your perspective on the paraphrase "translations" as they are more of a commentary rather than a translation. However when it comes to word for word & more dynamic equivalents, please remember that word for word does not necessarily mean more accurate. That's not what it means at all. Word for word simply means that they took a sentence for example and translated each Greek/Hebrew word for the English word in the exact order in which it was placed in the original text. Here is the issue with that, no two languages use the same sentence/grammar structures. That's why sometimes when reading a NASB or KJV the reading is very clunky as the order of the words don't make sense for English grammar structure. Also there are going to be words in one language that don't have a translator word replacement in the other language. Also two languages aren't going to always have the same verbs/adjectives etc. KJV is simply just one of the first English translations we did but at the end of the day it is just that a "translation" and no two will ever be exact to a "T". It is simply impossible. There's no way translate perfectly two different languages. Dynamic equivalents are just as reliable to read God's word. I know this comment is lengthy but I really feel in my heart sometimes that these categories are misunderstood and I would never want to steer someone away from coming to Jesus because they think that they only have to read KJV or they won't really be reading the bible. That couldn't be farther from the truth.

@@_KendraChristine Oh no honey, I don't think you are trying to scare anyone away from the word. I should have said word for word translations rather than just singling KJV out. I was just using that for an example. Just because someone reads translations closer to the word for word side of the spectrum, doesn't mean they are receiving a more accurate meaning of God's word. If anything the format will read more "off" as to what they meant in Hebrew/Greek (I don't mean wrong when I say off), because in English we don't place words in the same order as say the Greeks/Hebrews would. Dynamic Equivalents take the original manuscripts and place the words in English in the order as we would in our grammar structure, while still giving us what they meant in their language. I didn't mean any harm or negativity, I just think it's important that new believers understand what word for word and thought for thought actually means. I know when I first started studying, I thought word for word actually meant it was a more true to God's word, when it actually means true to word placement as the original text. Big Difference.

I started by reading the NIV and ESV, then the NKVJ. Now, I'm reading the KJV 1611 and prefer this version to all the others. The CSB is what I use most now. I used to be a NASB girl because it’s so close to the original text. But when I researched it, the CSB was one step more “readable” than the NASB. Also, the Message gets a point because Peterson has said in interviews that it shouldn’t be used as someone’s Bible, preached, or studied from (as opposed to what Simmons claims about the Passion🤦‍♀️). When I was first getting into the Word as a high schooler, I actually had a side-by-side NASB and Message that was so helpful. A word-for-word right next to that expanded paraphrase really helped me get my Biblical “sea legs”😆 I LOVED this video, btw!

I agree overall in preferring more literal translations (my main ones are the ESV and RSV) -- and I really recommend taking courses in the biblical languages for anyone who is able -- though I do think more "dynamic" ones like the NLT have their place as secondary resources. Since there's no exact word-to-word correspondence between any 2 languages, there's always going to be some degree of paraphrasing, and it's a balancing act.

However I found out while studying and comparing to KJV the order in which the sentences were written in KJV sometimes are changed in the NKJV which throws the meaning off. Such a good question!! And I think study Bibles can be so helpful! Especially the John MacArthur one because if you get confused about a certain verse, he will address it and tell you what it means with context and cultural things! The Spurgeon study Bible is a little different because it doesn’t address every single verse, but only a few verses here and there. I just checked Amazon and John MacArthur has an NIV study Bible! The NASB claims to be the most literal translation but occasionally the NKJV is actually _more_ literal. The NIV translators seem to be confused, and were rather inconsistent as to whether they were trying to create a paraphrastic translation or a literal one, and it can go back and forth (the CSB, for my other issues with its style, is at least more consistent).

KJV, NKJV, ESV, NASB, and just recently the CSB, in this order. I own the NIV because I follow a Pastor who uses that version to preach from. I prefer to use the version of the Bible the Pastors I follow use because it makes it easier for me to follow along. With one exception, all of my Bibles are Study Bibles. Only my NIV is a readers Bible because I don't use it as a reference tool. I'm still adjusting to the CSB, but the Study notes in the Bible I purchased are great. I have watched many Bible reviewers for years now and I have discovered that few have deep knowledge of the translations. Reviewers who are Pastors are far more knowledgeable, but are often biased by their denomination. However, I prefer getting a review from someone who has studied Hebrew and Greek and also the culture of the times. I once had a Pastor who said that any version of the Bible YOU will read is the best one for YOU. Had I known then what I know now, I would have respectfully disagreed.

I tend to recommend the NKJV, or ESV for serious study, the CSB for general reading and for brand new Christians or purely devotional reading the NLT. The NIV is still the most popular and is a decent option as well. Despite what was said in the video the top selling translation are all good for certain things, but I must totally agree that people should avoid niche translations or paraphrases unless they know exactly what they are getting into and have a solid reason for doing so.

The TR base is, IMO, actually the NKJV's strength. But most editions of the NKJV actually have notes showing many of the differences between the TR, the Nestle-Aland/UBS text used by most other modern translations, and the Hodges-Farstad "Majority" text, which is quite useful if you know what you're dealing with.

Thank you for this video. I have seen lots of videos on KZfaq that say that we should only use the King James Version. I am not a part the King James only movement. I have noticed that a lot of independent Baptist Churches are King James Only.

A lot of those churches seem to go dangerously close into bibliolatry (worship of the bible itself rather than its divine Author), and preach the conspiracies of Peter Ruckman and Gail Anne "God And" Riplinger.

We also need to consider whether it is the Masoretic manuscripts or the Alexandrian.
@fnjesusfreak

Apples and kumquats. Masoretic only applies to the Old Testament and Alexandrian (if you believe in that textual theory; I don't and think it's just a composite of deviant texts rather than a text type of its own, leaving only Western and Eastern/Byzantine types) only applies to the New.

I’m not a huge fan of the niv either (not that it’s wrong, I just don’t like how it reads 🤷🏻‍♀️) I love love love the nlt, I feel like it gets a bad wrap as a paraphrase because of the Living Bible, I don’t think people understand that it’s not that any more at all. @@_KendraChristine I didn’t mean to sway you. I just think it gets lumped in with the message and the passion. I think it’s good to be wary and cautious At least the guy who wrote the message said up front that it was a creative dramatization and paraphrase, the guy who wrote the passage made all sorts of false claims about his credentials and his editing team and that he gotten taken to heaven for a special “download” of the scriptures from Jesus 😳. He changed the introduction to the second additions because people were so upset about it. And most of his initial interviews about it have been pulled from KZfaq too. Deceptive 😣.

interesting that you mentioned the Message bible... I thought I would try this bible once years ago... and brought it one day to church... and when asked to read from it a passage out of Ephesians.. the Sunday school teacher just looked at me bewildered and asked... what translation is THAT?... everyone was a little shocked... so I never used it after that.... but I disagree with you on your choice of the NKJV... I used to be a big fan of it as well... in fact I purchased that same bible you showed the MacArthur study bible back in 2000 and used it for about 4 years until I started noticing little quirks about it.... remember the premise of the NKJV.. is that they wanted to create a bible that was easier to understand and Not as archaic as the KJV... this is a noble reason... but I feel the NKJV translators over extended themselves.. and placed a lot of their own biases or.. interpretations of what the text should state in their final product.. some passages to compare between the KJV and what the NKJV (an update to the KJV).. say... please compare these verses... Genesis 1:1 Genesis 22:8 Haggai 1:10 Numbers 21:14 Song of Solomon 3:9 1 Cor 1:18 Rev 4:11 for starters.... if you are Not sure... how the NKJV corrupted these verses and others... I can explain just ask me... for example Haggai 1:10..say... the KJV states "over you"... the NKJV states "above you".. correct..?. seems the same but WRONG... this "over you".. was meant in the text to be understood as "because of you".. the NKJV translators... missed the intended meaning of THAT verse... you gave a little speech about the importance of what we read... and you mentioned paraphrased bibles.. but bibles such as the NKJV which was just supposed to be an update... that actually changed verses///AND there are many more..... is just as bad or worse because they are more subtle about it... like the serpent to Eve in the garden... be careful..

("Are we being shot at?"🤣) Seriously though this was a great topic, I completely agree, we have to be careful when reading some of the different bible translations... I personally read the NKJV(keeping it original💯) but I also own the (Contemporary Comparative Parallel Bible) Take for example a verse from the Lord's prayer;(Matthew 6:13) the NKJV includes;(For yours is the kingdom & the power & the glory forever. Amen.) The NIV, NLT, & The message doesn't. Btw your Grandmothers bible, Amazing/Gorgeous.. 😍

Kendra, all translations are interpretations. Where did they get their definitions from? Because the translators did not want to make a mistake, the definitions can be too literal. Even in the King James, some verses are heresy at a glance. Interpretation should be based on what the verse means and not solely based on what the verse says. Scripture interprets scripture. Even W.E. Vine has some words that he shows don't mean what some people think it means. Try the Kenneth Wuest Translation. He was an NASB translator and Professor at Moody Bible Institute. He brought out all the possible meanings of words. Some people will get stuck because of the readability of the King James so the New Living Translation might be for my kids. Read Revelations from the King James and then the Phillips translation for fun and tell me if you got the same idea.

I'm sure this woman means well and is sincere. But it is obvious she is still very much a "newbee" in her christain journey if she thinks ANY translation is representative of the "original" text. We not only don't have any actual original texts, but those we do have are themselves copies of the "original" manuscripts! All translations are functionally interpretations at their core. Unless one is willing to actually become fluent in Hebrew, where you first read the scripture in Hebrew and THEN read it in english, you do not really know what was being said. Therefore, as a consequence, you are best served by using all the english translations to get a basic knowledge of the text--but with the understanding that they still "commentaries" at heart.

The way I look at it, the bible was not written in my native language and therefore I am highly dependent on someone else (including King James) in another culture to translate holy scriptures-then approved translations are all ok for me. But that is just me.
