Bicep curls are the staple biceps exercise done in almost every arm workout. The problem is, there is a very common mistake that is made when doing this bicep exercise that is likely holding back the gains that you are seeing by doing it. The ironic thing is, the same thing that is the mistake is a beneficial thing for your biceps strength and size…as long as you know where to draw the line.
In this video, I’m going to show you how to perform the biceps curl properly to help you build bigger arms and biceps much more efficiently. When you make mistakes on your curls like I demonstrate here, it makes it difficult for the biceps to take on the brunt of the exercise and grow to their true capacity.
The issue is that the front delt moves from an important stabilizer during the curl to a prime mover very quickly if you don’t watch out and pay attention during your curls. For example, during the first few degrees of a curl you actually want the shoulder or front delt to kick in and work. This is because you want it to contribute to the stability of the humerus to give your biceps a mechanical leverage to operate at its strongest.
That said, beyond the initial part of the biceps curl exercise, you want to try and minimize the contribution of the front deltoid muscle. If you do not, you are making a big biceps curl mistake. The front delt if allowed to, will take over the lift and leave the biceps to do very little of the work it is supposed to. When this happens, the size of the biceps is held back and the ultimate results you see in your bicep muscle is diminshed.
If you find that you are letting your front delt do the majority of the lift, it will be easily noticed by the elbow jutting forward during the biceps curl. Instead, lower the weight that you are using and make sure you keep your elbow pinned to your side the entire time. This will allow your biceps to take on almost the entire load. Before you think that this is somehow compromising your gains by lifting “lighter” keep in mind that you likely weren’t lifting near that weight before because you were swinging it.
Your other option if you feel that you are not able to make the adjustments even after watching this video and becoming aware of the flaw is to perform the two bicep exercise alternative shown. The no money curl is a biceps curl variation that puts your arms more in the frontal plane rather than the sagittal plane. This will minimize the front delts and help you to put more work on the biceps. Likewise, the drag curl will take the shoulders out of the movement and put it squarely where it should be, on the biceps.
For a complete workout program that builds not just your arms but your entire body, be sure to head to athleanx.com and get the Ultimate Arms program. This is designed to specialize your arm training to get you the biggest arms possible while still training your entire body from head to toe.

Jeff, I'm 21 months from turning 60. For most of my life I was an avid cyclist, power-lifter, and body builder. Then serious illness brought me all the way down-3 heart attacks and modern scurvy which ruined my legs--now have knee replacements. After discovering that my downfall was my own body's inability to absorb vitamin C (as well as other nutrients)' I'm on my way back. Can you make a comprehensive video on low-T and the older man in the gym. Thanks! Love your work. SO wish I had you in the late 70s, early 80s!

Try a whole foods vegan diet, especially a low fat one if you have high heart disease. A low fat whole foods vegan diet was proven to reverse heart disease and diabetes and a few other things like minimizing inflammation and helping you deal with DNA damage from exercise and environmental pollutants because whole foods will usually have a lot of antioxidants. Of course if you are not worried about a heart attack or stroke you can eat medium fat, and I'm sure on a low fat vegan diet you're allowed a handful of nuts or so. You should definitely look into it, no doubt in my mind that you will not regret it. Keep in mind vegans naturally have more free testosterone available, you can look up studies for that. I know this can be hard to accept for some, but it is the truth. Dr Kim A Williams and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn are the top experts in the field. Of course there's many more. You should also have a look at Dr. Greger who makes bite sized videos on nutrition, he's my personal favorite. They'll show you a lot of reputable studies and you can read them yourself and make your mind up. Just make sure to eat whole foods and a lot of protein rich sources like lentils and beans and nutritional yeast and tofu and seitan and quinoa and buckwheat and and hummus and peas and yellow peas and nuts and a ton of other things if you just search it up into google, and also get a source of b12, either from fortified foods or a supplement, I'd recommend supplements. Good luck friend, I wish you the best. I really hope you look into this, you could add many years to your life.

Eating whole foods is great but don't avoid good fats (which generally includes minimizing polyunsaturated fats, PUFAs). I'm told saturated fats (which of the category, I'm not sure) are important in transport of testosterone, as well as other healthy processes. I'm not a fan of a "vegan" diet because the restrictions don't seem nutritionally warranted (however I do recommend minimizing beef). That is, for most people, eggs, milk, and meat - never mind honey 🙄 - are fantastic sources as part of an overall rounded diet. Of course, veggies are critical, but that's not the variable between diets. "Everything in moderation."

I hate all these idiot comments that say Jeff is on roids, his body is the result of 20 years or so of training in the right way. Look at his jaw, that is not the jaw of someone on steroids. Ffs listen to his videos, he trains his muscles in proper isolation. I have increased about 15% in size and strength since watching these vids. As soon as I can afford it, I'm going to buy a full program from him. The man's a fitness scientist, end of.

yes, I don't think he is that big bro. He is shredded af not "big". Depends on what you think is good physique, if jeff would add some body fat, a lot of his muscles would be much less visible and his vascularity would be way less. For example, Bradley Martyn - that guy is 'big' and obviously the guy is juiced af , compare him to Jeff and you see what I mean

@truejustice thats because it has taken them years to get to that point. When you see big people who have terrible form, there's several factors and other extenuating circumstances that we are unaware as to how they've achieved such massive proportions. I see them a lot myself but we have to take into consideration that they could have been taking steroids, and as well as have spent years in the gym to achieve that size. We only see the moment when we see the person train, but we really don't know their story. But regardless how big they are, if you literally just avoid being a swinger and ego lifting and with proper form you can achieve greater gains. And also keep in mind SIZE does not always mean more STRENGTH.

Side laterals, front raises, shoulder press, pull aparts, press ups, rows, pull downs, good mornings, curls, extensions, W-Y-T's. some bodyweight squats, Bulgarian split squats. U can make a decent circuit with some of those things. Also I'm sure Jeff will have a mini band workout on here. Check joe de Franco as well. There is also another way. During flexion, slightly tightening the wings and back muscles to hold and stop your upperarms from moving either forward or backward and to puff your chest out a little bit upwards, hence your forearms are coming up a little bit from the outsides instead of from the inside or the front. That significantly decreases pressure on the frontal deltoid and distributes the entire flexion in your biceps aided with a bit of contribution of back muscles and hind shoulder muscles.

so many people do this exercise wrong it's really incredible, people who think they can curl 25kg with his form should try again, drop it to like 15kg, don't use your front delt, or swing momentum and your results will sky rocket. Props Jeff, this video should be watched by anyone who assumes they been curling correctly. Excellent work

Hi Jeff. Firstly, thanks for an awesome channel, very educational! I struggle with dead-lifts, mainly flexibility, I can't get down far enough. So I'd like you to cover some stretches to help me start doing them, and also I'd like you to cover some other exercises that I can do in the meantime while I work on my flexibility! Keep the channel up, it's gold!

I love the 'no money' curls. It's import to work the biceps at all different angles to get the inner and outer yes? Jeff, I'm loving getting back into it, finally free of bursitis pain in both shoulders. I'm doing the face pulls, reverse pitches, side external rotation pulls, lent over lateral raises, side lateral raises, front presses, 6 days per week at 70% capacity. My shoulders feel great and in a much better place in my posture. Never again! THANK YOU!!!!

My trainer told me, "elbows like glue against your side" and "do not rock or sway your body." Those two fixes together seemed to give me a decent bicep curl. He also suggested practicing with lighter weights while my back was against a wall

I have found that it highly useful (physically demonstrative) to take a small barbell (say 20 lbs) and then stand with heels, butt, back, shoulders, head, against a wall, if only as a demonstration of how much one might learn about how one leans in posture or swing the arms during the curling movement. Thanks for all your efforts, Jeff.

Momentum is how our bodies naturally make things easier. There is nothing wrong about it when naturally moving. But at the gym when loads and repetition volumes are needed is proper form, not momentum that will help isolate the muscle targeted, obtaining the proper gains and most importantly avoid injuries. Great pointers here Jeff, Thank You!

It depends on your body's proportions, but as the other commenter said, via Alan Thrall, ass-to-grass isn't best at heavier loads. If you want a quick non-nuanced answer, get slightly lower than parallel. Pay attention to your hip hinge, balance, and core (tightening for stability).
