I have 2 Bielefelder roos and 6 hens who have recently come to maturity at 6 months old; they are definitely worth the extra wait! I am so impressed by these birds that I ordered hatching eggs on you tube and hatched out 5 hens and 1 roo a couple of days ago. My big hens have begun to lay beautiful large eggs and they are the dearest and sweetest chickens I have ever had. They run to see me whenever I come out and sit to listen as I tell them how beee-u-tee-ful they are! My roos are just as sweet and loving too, Captain and Leonard are very handsome and I will exhibit them at our county fair next year. If anyone is considering chickens and you only want a few make Bielefelders the one you pick!

My Barred Rock rooster was also mean with a capital M. We had a chicken coop so the boys, (ages 6 and 7), would suit up when collecting eggs, complete with shin guards, coat and helmet, even in the summer. We let them take a baseball bat as well. At the risk of revealing how mean I can be with hostile animals I will tell what I did. When I entered he learned not to go after me when I kicked him hard enough to launch him. So he got the message three times from my foot, by hitting the wall and then the third time as he fell to the ground. However he seemed only capable of remembering this for about 6 week before coming after me again. I was gone for a week with the boys when he came after my wife and left a hole in her leg. Upon my return he went into the pressure cooker and our chore subs came with delight to help eat him.

Oh wow. That sounds like our rooster. We have launched in several times and he keeps coming back. Apparently Barred Rock roosters are jerks. I will never have one again. I am sure you were really mad when he went after your wife. I am sure everyone was happy he was gone!

I thought you guys may be pretty close to my area when you said an hour from Asheville. I'm in Rogersville,TN. The roosters in the breeds I've raised over my lifetime have been about the same. It just depends on each individual breeder (whether they choose the gentle/ aggressive trait to breed for) as well as each rooster. Like people they each have their own personality. Lol. From my own 30+ yrs raising chickens. RI red, Mottled Java, Silver laced wynndotte have been most aggressive. Barred rock, Australorp, Jersey Giant & Americana have been about half/half. Brahma, Polish, Cochin have been gentlest. That's my little bit of personal knowledge ATM. Lol. Have fun & enjoy your experiences. Piece out y'all.

Hi James, I really like the Bielfelders so far. We have several different chickens but I don’t like the Barred Rock roos. 😂 We are about 2 hours from Rogersville in Burnsville. Not too far. God bless!

Even on rainy days it’s pretty there! And y’all opened a little box of sunshine! I am convinced that it is absolutely impossible to be upset when holding a baby chick. I wish everybody in the world could hold one right now, things would be a lot better! That little mystery chick looks like a Lakenvelder which is also German, but I don’t see that breed listed on the Murray McMurray site. Whatever it is, it’s pretty darn cute!!

Thanks so much Lea! I agree wholeheartedly, they are a ray of sunshine. They are so cute. We are so blessed to live here. I fully believe this is God’s country. I will let you know what I find out about the baby chick! I just looked up the Lakenvelder, I have never heard of that chicken. They are pretty.

We have 3 of these hens, well now 4 because we kept one of their offspring. Tbey are hands down our best all around girls. I'm planning to get a Roo so we can breed them!

That is great to read. Thank you Ginger. I did a lot of research after dealing with the barred rock roosters. I didn’t want another mean rooster. We will have extra roosters if you are close by. We live about an hour outside of Asheville.

I know what you mean about finding that right rooster. I actually thought you had quail when I saw the chicks in the last video. I may have to try these.

Hi Cyndi. Mean roosters are the worst! Ben thought they looked a lot like quail as well. I will keep you posted on how they do and if all the claims of gentle roosters are accurate. I am praying and hoping. 🙏🙏 Thank you so much!

So your driving down a road in the rain and I'm thinking to myself I know that road! You guys wouldn't happen to be on the Oregon coast would ya? Looks like the backroad between Seaside/ Astoria/ Warrenton, depending on which way you drive it . But ya haven't been on that road in 35 yrs if I'm right . Be curious to know for sure.

Hi Controversial Hunter! We actually don’t live in Oregon but in Appalachia in Western North Carolina. That sounds like a lovely road in Oregon though. God bless!

Hello from Ky...we also bought the Bielefelder chickens, But someone today told me they can't take much heat...So I was wondering what you thought about them & hot weather

Hi Jack & Betty Gilbert. We have not noticed that at all. They do fine here in Western North Carolina. When it is warm they head into the shade like the other chickens. To be honest we haven’t noticed them being less or more tolerant of heat than the others. I hope that helps. 🙂

How are the bielderfelders going? I haven't seen them for a while. They should be a couple months from laying.

Hi Dwight, unfortunately, all but one of the chicks we got from Murray McMurray died. They were in the mail too long. We have Billy and Michelle the batch that survived from Murray and bought some eggs from another homesteader. They are younger but doing really well. 🙂 I will email you a pic tomorrow.

Hi Danny, we originally ordered them from Murray McMurray hatchery but most died on route, unfortunately. I am hearing that may hatcheries won’t deliver Chicks right now because of the bird flu. I purchased some eggs from another homesteader and most hatched. I can share his email if you would like to buy some eggs 🙂
