Yes, it's part of society unfortunately. I really hate the way sports fans are drained of money and even though the top players are well-off, few seem to play with joy and freedom. Football is part of so many people's identity, it's more than just a game. The creative side needs nurturing but it's all about tv companies and fatcat owners making money. Let's hope there's an improvement, somehow...

This started when all the rules that existed were abolished in favor of the rich teams. Rules that did not allow more than 3 foreign players. That limited the big teams from buying more than 3. Rules such as only the champion making it to the lucrative European Cup or Champions League. Later they added teams at the expense of teams from poorer countries. And pricing regular fans out of games and putting all games on private tv where you pay to watch. I remember a time when all teams had different styles. And these contrasting styles were interesting to watch. Nowadays money has pushed for the same style.

Your comment is gold. This is what destroyed football. There is no identity anymore, just business. Players in the 80s played for a pack of beers. Maradona played with kids in the street without caring of injuries.

You are saying what I’ve been saying for years but the so called football fans nowadays just ignore or simply dont care. They want to put all the super stars into 2-3 clubs and watch them dominate every year. The kids are too young to know about the 3 foreign players era
@SK-kh2rs
@SK-kh2rs Ай бұрын
3 foreign players rule was dumb and removing it helped smaller teams too. Only champions making the european cup meant the european cup was shite in the 80s. Peak football was around late 90s and 00s when you had the modern format of ucl. Prob with football today is the tactics which has made the sport robotic and lack of street footballers. And money has not made people adopt same styles 😂 thats managers trying to copy pep.
@Jose-sy1je
@Jose-sy1je Ай бұрын
@@SK-kh2rs Your comment shows your ignorance? How did it help smaller teams? Look at any league table from back in the day. Teams were a lot closer together in the table. Later on the big teams could just buy out the smaller teams. Teams like Real Madrid did not start winning again until the rule was removed. It led to loads of investors coming in and straight up buying teams bc they were assured that they could just buy success and were always guaranteed a spot in the Champions League. Even the group format was implemented so that the big teams couldn't get knocked out that easily. It's obvious you did not watch this sport at that time and don't know what you are talking about

Bielsa is right. Had we as a society not encouraged 'Cheating' by instead calling it 'Gamesmanship Or Simulation'. Our once beautiful game would now be a lot more 'Honest' (less 'Riddled With Cheats') than it is today. Just like how 'Lying' by the politicians within our government was deliberately changed to 'Spin'. And 'Criminality' within the banking industry was deliberately changed to 'Miss-Selling'. Both of which have also allowed those situations to get much, much worse as a consequence. A process that is known as 'Trivialization'. Or 'Justifying/Excusing Dishonesty' as a way of life. @heldinahtmlhell

It's very rarely the fault of the team with possession. It's the park the bus merchants that are killing the game. Man City might be a bit boring because they're so good, but very few teams are capable of playing like that. It's the likes of France and England that have killed the Euros. Teams that don't want the ball, they just want to sit back, defend and rely on individual moments of quality. Despite having all the quality in the world. Also, I can't help but think the fact Copa America is being hosted by Yankland is a factor in what he's saying. America is destroying football and commodifying it. They now own half our clubs, they've bought their way into hosting both the Copa America and the next World Cup (for the second time!), they have no love of football and no culture of genuine sports fan culture (to which Bielsa is alluding to, basically saying that football is a religion, not entertainment) and Yank owners were at the heart of the Super League proposals.

@spacecamel2501
@spacecamel2501 Ай бұрын
parking tactics have only increased due to teams playing possession-heavy football. either that and/or you got teams doing pressing and more pressing to counter those. it's all related to each other, and what has slowly been sucking the life out of the game.
@heldinahtmlhell
@heldinahtmlhell Ай бұрын
@@spacecamel2501 The real problem is the timewasting, feigning injury and diving. All the rules should be geared to keeping the game flowing and incentivising attacking play and goals. But they're not. And there's no discipline because the yellow card/red card system is completely outdated. Refs are terrified of giving early cards and sending a player off and spoiling the game, so players can get away with everything. All tactical or violent fouls should be a yellow card. All stopping or slowing down free kicks or throw-ins should be a yellow card. All dives should be a yellow card. The game should continue if a player is down injured, just let the physio come on the pitch while the game is playing like in rugby. And stop the game if they interfere with play. This would stop 90% of players pretending to be injured and going down easily. I'd also change the red card to a penalty. So refs wouldn't be afraid to give cards out and there'd be more goals. These simple changes would make the game flow so much more, which would mean so much more football being played. The last 20 minutes of games are a joke. 9/10 they're just full of timewasting. Watch a game and count how many times a team is allowed to retrieve the ball and take a free kick without the opposition throwing or kicking the ball away, holding onto it or standing in front of the free kick. Which allows their team to all get back into position behind the ball. Football is about space and exploiting space. That's how you score goals. And the more the game flows, the more space there is, as space is usually created when the ball is turned over.

Personally I don’t think the style of play is the issue these days. The problem is football fans are getting things like financial fair play and PSR rules rammed down their throats. Smaller teams in England have had any bit of hope ripped away from them because the day they might have owners who have money to spend wouldn’t be allowed. The premier league is the most corrupt organisations in modern society. Just this month alone teams have had to make some absolute bonkers transfers just to avoid points deductions. So smack bang in the middle of the euros the fans that should be supporting England are more bothered about FFP. Stinks to the core. These ball bags are gonna suck every bit of enjoyment out of it.

Just to put this in perspective and the fact that a reply said “ move on “ and he would’ve got you relegated . Bielsa was much more than his stubbornness not to change his ways , he brought something much more than that to Leeds , he turned a mid table championship team into a premier league team with mediocre championship players and elevated some of those players to premier league level players but he did say to the board that those players would only last a couple of years and that they would have to be replaced with better quality ones so a squad overhaul was needed , he didn’t get those players HE wanted because of financial considerations , ask any Leeds supporters and they’ll tell he brought much more than what people outside of Leeds and supporters of other teams never saw , he left you feeling you were in safe hands , had we got relegated with him , you knew he would bring you back and he would’ve got unanimous support from Leeds fans but the board took a different route , all you have to do is ask supporters of every team Bielsa has managed and players he’s managed to know how much he’s revered , Bielsa is much more than a football team manager , much much more.

He is appreciated for what he did as coach decade or so ago, tactics change, and overtime coaches find more efficient ways to play and win; 3 points talk, that's all. Think of it like a puddle of water condensing down to a few drops on the ground, what has been done already won't work as well anymore, opposing teams catch up to the curve after 1-3 years of a team's dominance around the continent. There's just so much you can do with tactics, and trophies don't win themselves, if you don't take the initiative to be an innovator then other teams will do it instead, Bielsa was also an innovator, unfortunately the tactics will change. Only a few teams could play against Barcelona and give them a run for their money, took a few years for the other teams especially in La Liga to catch up.

Don't disagree with the general statement, but his Uruguay team is just about the worst offender of this I have seen. They make the game real ugly and make it their main goal to limit/remove beautiful passages of play from the match.

He's right, The saturation of Football is putting me off the game. Too many games now full stop. It's all about Revenue. Champion's League now is boring because of it, same with this years Euro's. The next World Cup is being extended from 32 to 48. It's ridiculous.

Sentiments summed up by state of the Euros; tippy-tappy, side-to-side, pedestrian Football, with all the intent focused on not conceding. Between that and VAR, the game is near done.
@heldinahtmlhell
@heldinahtmlhell Ай бұрын
The best sides at the Euros have played "tippy-tappy" football. Spain, Germany, Georgia, Turkey etc. The worst sides are the teams who don't want the ball and just want to defend. England and France. They're the ones that are killing games. Playing out from the back is high risk and creates scoring opportunities. If you lose the ball, the opposition have a good chance. If you can play through the press, you have space to attack into. Teams rarely keep the ball for the sake of it, they're not even capable of doing that. If they're doing it it's almost always because the opposition aren't pressing them and are just sitting behind the ball. That's the only time you get easy possession. Unless you're a Pep team, who are so good that they can be boring. Blame the defensive teams, not the teams trying to play football.

Pay attention you youtubers. Every national team now is African descent. The cultural expression is dead. This isn't racist. It's just pointing out the obvious everyone is saying behind closed doors. It's fun to watch, but is missing the special sauce of identity within the 184 countries.

I agree, but ironically this all started with jack Charlton's Ireland team fielding every decent English player with a pretend Irish Grandparent. Why do small countries like Croatia succeed above their station? Because they have a true national identity that ALL of their populous feels a connection with. A team with Croatian generational roots and fans with their shared sense of history. I'm not what sure France or Belgium represent anymore?

Stopped watching football three years now...I totally agree with Bielsa. Unfortunately everything is 'BIG' business now... Our local team is just foreigners now not a single one from the club youth whats the point anymore? I'll watch the kids play but i'm done with senior football its all for the money and the sport has suffered greatly even competition format is to favor certain odds for tv/streaming/bet avenues...

The cheating is not great but it’s the sterile nature of the tippy tappy, backwards, sideways boring play, trying to walk the ball into the net that is killing it. Stevie Coppell would not have any place in today’s game, lack of completions and stats would be unacceptable but his pace and runs would make the game x100 more exciting than what we watch now.

Totally agree with you. I've gone I don't watch some games in the Premier league because they are boring. This obsession with playing out from the back and as you say, sideways passing does my head in. As for all the useless stats. Who cares how many dribbles a player has made!. Pep has alot to do with the way teams play today. But you can't criticise him because the media love him. Football has gone too tactical and players aren't as skilled as they once where. Now their more like athletes.

He's absolutely correct!.. U take out the Physical tackling aspect,use a Ball which is way to lightweight ( fine for a 5 a side game,or for kids) which speeds up the game,on Grass,which certain wealthy teams ade using a artificial product to anchor the Grass ( look it up if u dont believe me) which creates this smooth putting Green surface! And then the game is still being smothered with over the top,negative tactics! ( it's suposed to be about entertaining the fans) 5 Subs and the corporatisation of the game!

In total agreement ,as a Spurs fan , Beilsa caused me to watch Leeds develop some of the best football they played, since the Strachen and Wilko season in the old 1st Division ,that was what Glory is about ,not just winning, but in a way the leaves people feeling satisfied that they see the best of the sides they support. National identity is not being expressed by our National team ,playing a low block style preferred in Italy , it is the bankers football of minimum effort for maximum return . We don't value the defence as much as attack , the high risk strategy that makes the game exciting based on creating multiple chances and when done right ,multiple goals requires a team able to pass and move instinctively rather than mechanical position play. Southgate may well win a 1-0 victory or draw out another penalty shoot out, but all the neutrals will want the team playing football to win ,not currently England. Nor if they lift the Trophy will it be games want to watch and show to children as the example of best practice. 1966 England played West Germany off the park, in an end to end style that expressed what I enjoy and want to see. Don Revies era Leeds fans would disagree I am sure ?

A great and wise man of world football. But sadly one of the last. I barely recognise the game now from the one I grew up with as a boy in the 1970's. Those who find statistics more fascinating than a mesmerising dribble down the wing. Who think a full blooded tackle sinful but putting your arms around an opponent to hold him back from the ball is clever play. God, I could go on with this list. I want real, creative football back. Football is not a sport. It is an art.
@heldinahtmlhell

The actual football on the pitch is much better now than it was in the past. Go back and watch games from the 90s and 2000s and every team plays like Wimbledon. The ball is in the air half the time, spamming crosses and set pieces, the GK booting down the pitch every time. It's wretched. There's much more creativity and risk in football now, you're just not paying attention. Not to mention we now have the best players from all over the world, and the best coaches. But major international games, and big finals, tend to be rubbish, mainly due to the pressure and what's at stake. Teams just play defensively and are afraid to take risks. There definitely needs to be more goals in football and more changes to make more attacking play and goals more likely. Because games are largely boring. In the early 20th century there used to be far more goals. Playing 4--2-4 was the norm.
