Most kids who played football with us in the street "styled" themselves after famous footballers. You got the three Ronaldinho's trying fancy flicks. The Pirlo's and Totti's dancing around with passes. The Beckhams with their hair all nice. The lazy Inzaghi's just hanging at one end. And then you got the few self-styled Gattuso-Keanes, kicking at everyone's legs, shouting obscenities. I vividly remember one of them giving himself the nickname "Grozny", after the most destroyed city in Russia during the Chechen war back then. "I destroy everything," he said.

He doesn't exactly take responsibility either though. A big man can turn the other cheek, and (as good as Keane was) a better footballer might have found revenge by embarrassing Haaland on the pitch, Roy Keane just assaulted the guy and has always stuck to the he-started schtick that most infants grow out of. I'm an Arsenal fan. I think Roy Keane is one of the best players I've ever seen play football. The reason Keane went at McAteer is because of the World Cup in 2002. This game at Sunderland's Stadium of Light Stadium was at the start of the 2002 /03 season. That is to say August 2023. The World Cup had been on in Japan and Korea only 2 months previously. This is the infamous World Cup where Keane had been sent home by Mick McCarthy ( the Irish manager at the time ) after they had huge row around the fact that McCarthy had the team train for the World Cup on a tiny island called Saipan. Before the game Sunderland's three Irish players receive awards for their participation at the World Cup. The Sunderland crowd are pumped and chant about the World Cup and Keane's absence from it. Saipan was an absolute disaster for Ireland. There wasn't even a football pitch on this island. So they trained on an abandoned fucking car park. McCarthy was a piss poor organiser and no one had arranged for kit for the players to arrive. They had no footballs. No cones. No bibs. No energy snacks / drinks to aid recovery. It short a complete shit show. Now Roy Keane was insanely obsessive about training well and EVERYTHING being perfect. It's hard to convey just how intense he was back at the height of his powers. ( he had won the PFA Player of the Season and the Sports Writer Player of the Season the previous season 2001/2002 - not many midfielders have ever won both awards - he's the best midfielder I've ever seen play the game.) Anyway so Keane loses it and gives an interview with a leading Irish newspaper where he tears into McCarthy. McCarthy calls a team meeting and questions whether Keane's commitment and loyalty to his country. Of course, Keane goes apeshit. McCarthy sends him home. Jason McAteer was a key part of that Ireland team and squad. He writes newspapers articles where he sides with McCarthy and questions Keane's mental state. During the game McAteer winds Keane up about his World Cup exit. The clash numerous times and you can see McAteer saying things to Keane each time. McAteer then makes a gesture of writing in a book. Keane - as the Irish captain - had been contracted to write a book about his World Cup experience. He book had some out a week or so before this game. In it Keane EVISCERATED McCarthy. The book sells millions in Ireland the UK. This gesture of why don't you go write it in your book winds Keane up and the next chance he gets he elbows McAteer in the head. McAteer gets up and pretends to write something on his palm - he makes this gesture in a very fey and girly way. Keane loses it and chases McAteer around the centre circle as his team mates hold him back. Keane then stomps off the park. The entire stadium are howling at him and chanting something about the World Cup. Niall Quinn - Sunderland and Irish striker / legend and beast of big CF - runs across the pitch as Keane is leaving the pitch and puts his open hand in Keane's face - he's looking for Keane to shake his hand. It seems like he's saying mocking Keane and saying well done and thank you for leaving us at the World Cup. Quinn later pleads that he was merely trying to make peace with Keane and put everything behind them. Keane pushes his hand away and rages. Sunderland win the game 1-0. English media stunned by these scenes. They ask if we are to see this Irish civil war play out at every ground where Irish players play for the rest of the season,.
