Highlights from every regular season start of Ben Roethlisberger's amazing rookie season in 2004. Updated version with NO MUSIC can be found here: • Big Ben's Amazing Rook...
2004 was a truly SPECIAL season for the Steelers, despite not hoisting a Lombardi at the end. It remains one of my favorite seasons of all time, and other than 1976, the 2004 squad was perhaps the best Steeler team to not win a Super Bowl. It was an incredibly fun year. And central to that fun was the birth of the Ben Roethlisberger era.
Ben elevated the team from the moment he stepped on the field. By his 3rd start, he was taking over games. He very quickly distinguished himself as the best player on offense, and his insertion into the starting lineup almost instantly transformed that team from talented underachiever to heavyweight contender. The young QB wasn't perfect... but he had "Hall of Fame" written all over him right from the start. And the Steelers immediately began winning games with Ben that they would've lost without him.
Throughout his career, it's never been about what Roethlisberger has done "statistically." He's never been a particularly coveted fantasy football player, even in the midst of 5000-yard seasons. That's because fantasy football is 100% stats-based, and stats aren't what make Ben great. It's about what he does in BIG moments, clutch plays that "only" Ben Roethlisberger makes, that winning edge that he brought to the team from the moment he stepped on the field. Ben is largely defined by intangibles. But first and foremost, it's about WINNING. And he's been winning since the start.
This video features highlights from every regular season game of Ben Roethlisberger's amazing "Rookie of the Year" season in 2004. It's a long video (16-1/2 minutes), but I've watched it multiple times and it makes me smile every time.

To be fair, it did. Watch this video again and watch how many times they were in run defense and the LBs were moving forward. The defense also helped, I think the highest anyone scored Ben's rookie season was like 21 or so. It was the same as Russell Wilson his rookie season. #1 running game and #1 defense. It was obvious Ben was going to be a star, but starting your career with the #1 defense and running game certainly helped.

I watch more college football than pro and Roethlisberger was the best QB in 2003 college ball. Not just the QBs coming to the draft but of all of them that season. What's interesting is that the way he played made me think that he might be a 21st century version of Otto Graham and I think he has been the closest to Graham who by all and any measuring sticks is still the greatest QB of all time. He combines at the highest level the 3 major aspects of T-formation QB play. They are (1) passing, (2) play making/ball carrying, (3) leading/winning. Plus, he possesses Graham's toughness & competitive spirit. The only other QB in pro history who possessed all of these qualities at that level was Staubach.

I remember seeing some tape of him from college, Man he was good, I think it was an interview with Colbert where I saw it. and they had some interest in him, I remember he came to PGH to meet and greet with Cower and crew. And then the whole draft mash up between Ben, Manning, and Rivers. I was kind of crossing my fingers a bit hoping Steelers would get Ben, and that took forever. But they got him. I don't normally wish ill will on any one, but , when Maddox went down in game 2, I have to be honest, i had a bit of excitement to see Ben Do his thing. And the rest is history. Yes, they did fall to the Pats in the AFC champs game, But in reg season, they beat the Pats pretty good. Still. Yes, he has two rings, and a bunch of pro bowls, and others. But if you google his records stats. That list is LOOOOOng. not just in the NFL, but records he's broke in PGH as well. HOFer for sure. Oh, almost forgot. Best pump fake in the biz. I have to look it up to be sure, but I think that was the best rookie QB stats ever, at least in the W/L perspective.

Undisputed number one rookie season. Screw Randy moss and his 17 touchdowns, Ben came in and went undefeated until the AFC championship game that’s unequivocally the best rookie season any player has ever had.

Yeah, I hated losing Plax to the Giants. Of course, he caught the TD pass that ended New England's bid for a perfect season in Super Bowl XLII. :) Then he accidentally shot himself in the leg at a NYC nightclub and went to jail for 20 friggin' months. What a bullshit sentence... they ruined the guy's life. I'm not saying the guy was an angel, but for crying out loud... 20 months??? If memory serves, he didn't even get to see the birth of his child. Anyway, he eventually came back and signed with the Steelers in 2012, but it didn't amount to anything. He had a handful of receptions and was done. But you're right, he was a beast in his prime.

Jeez 20 months? Having a bullet in his foot wasn’t punishment enough? Lol. But yeah I forgot he had that TD in the super bowl. Gets very overshadowed by the Tyree catch

For all you PItt fans and other detractors, keep in mind that nobody has seen every play that every QB has made. So there is no way anyone can say for sure who is the most disciplined or consistently good on a play by play basis. The only basis one can judge all QBs is game by game & season by season. In that context, Big Ben is as consistently good as any QB in pro history with the exception of Otto Graham. That's, of course, taking into account all the different things Roethlisberger can and does do well which almost all other QBs can't match.

It’s amazing how pittsburgh fans will fight for tomlin when their expectations should be higher. If it wasn’t for cowher building this team, tomlin would have never seen a Super Bowl!

I loved Tomlin over the first 5 seasons or so. And I've been done with him for about the last 5 seasons. I still think he's a good coach; I just think he's run his course in Pittsburgh. He's gotten too comfortable with "not losing". A coach, like a team, needs a certain "edge" to win in all. I feel like he's lost that edge.

@@mcmillenandwife yea here’s my thing tho. He has had a few 8-8 seasons. To me that is not a winning season. Your the same as you were at the beginning. In the playoffs he’s actually below .500. That says something about how you measure up to good teams. How many games did he win that could of went either way. He’s an ok coach at best, but not good enough to coach a team like the Steelers. Just my opinion tho, I hope he proves me wrong.
@mcmillenandwife
@mcmillenandwife 10 ай бұрын
@@devilsrage-vt4hp I agree. "Not losing" doesn't equal winning, and that's my problem with Tomlin. Tomlin had a Hall of Fame QB for 15 years and won 1 Super Bowl. Can you imagine if Cowher had Ben for the 15 year duration of his career? There's a good chance we'd have 8 Lombardi's right now, not 6.

Keep these things in mind when assessing Big Ben's incomparable rookie season. Miami went to the super bowl the year before Marino's rookie season and of course, the Steelers were 6-10 the year before Ben's rookie season. The Steelers did NOT have a good running game in Ben's rookie season. In fact they had one of the worst. They were 19th in rushing Y/A. Just because you run a lot which Pittsburgh did more that any other team that year, doesn't mean you are good at it. Big Ben was the best at big plays, 3rd down & 4th qtr comebacks that season.

That year he beat both undefeated teams in back to back weeks. (New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles) That Steelers team was good that year and should have went to the Superbowl but they decided to play terrible in the AFC Title game against New England.
