Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley, June 26, 1903 - August 14, 1958) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s, when he played country blues to mostly African-American audiences. Through the 1930s and 1940s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with working-class African-American audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century.

The greatest piece of archive music film I have yet seen. I first saw it around 1984 and have been mesmerized ever since.

A great recording, been a BB fan for 50yrs since I first heard Shuffle Rag on LP. Many have played and recorded their versions of Hey Hey but no one seems to have quite reached Big Bill's level.

The interior looks a bit like Le Caveau de la Huchette in Paris, but apparently it was filmed in Brussels

It was filmed in 1956 in a jazz cave in Brussels, in the rue des Brigittines*, close to the center, in the nearness of the small Chapelle/Kapellekerk railway station. It is not sure if it was really a club, or just the right cave to film the staged performance. The film won the Silver Bear for short film at the Berlin Film Festival. It was set up by Yannick Bruynoghe, the then Belgian manager of BBB. Bruynoghe edited and helped publishing the ground breaking autobiography of BBB, 'Big Bill Blues' in 1955. *Most of the street was demolished during the underground train tunnels to connect the Nord and Midi railway stations after the war. Most of the original houses have been replaced by new buildings, still expanding today. After the war, there was an intense night life in Brussels, the center had a numerous music clubs for jazz or chanson, still flourishing in the sixties. Georges Moustaki has written a small novel about this period, when he played in Brussels' clubs, and Jacques Brel started to sing his songs.
