UglyTruck gets a bit lower to the ground and a fresh front end, along with a big braking upgrade using some parts that are much easier to find than you might think. The suspension rebuild and lowering portion applies to 2wd NBS Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra between 1999 and 2007, but the brake upgrade only applies to 1999-2004 model year trucks. Stopping your truck is a pretty important part of its performance, and if your stock brakes are due for a replacement, why not upgrade at the same time? I'll show you what it takes to get the job done...

The UglyTruck is a 2000 ECSB 2wd Silverado I picked up a few months ago, and I'm slowly transforming it from a neglected worn out pickup into a reliable and sporty (yet ugly) pickup. So far, its gotten a 4L80e swap and some later model wheels, and next time I'll address the rear suspension to go along with the front.

Haha, I mentioned the +1 factory brake upgrade when I watched your wheels video. You can get dual piston rear calipers from a Tahoe/Suburban and a thicker rotor from a police Tahoe to factory upgrade the back. That’s what I did on my 2000 SCLB 4x4.

Great video LT. The truck has already come a long way. Interesting piece of info, I didn't know they upgraded the rotors in 2005. I love upgrades that aren't obvious at first glance. I own a 2015 Ram 1500 Reg Cab Short Box 2WD with the 5.7 Hemi and 8 Speed. I was able to use the electric fan out of a 2012 Ram 1500 with a V6 all I had to do was extend the wiring harness a couple inches. (2009 and up Ram 1500's with the V8 use both a clutch style fan run off the water pump and a small electric fan hidden under the fan shroud). It bolted in and looks factory. No programming required the PCM turns the fan on and off automatically. Although you could change the temps at which the fan comes on and off with a programmer if you wanted to. I've had it in my truck for 4 years now and it works perfectly. Also my truck has electric steering so when you open the hood the only things running off of the belt are the alt, a/c and water pump.

You can also use the 2019-2020 Silverado rotors and calipers which are 13.5" rotors and 4 piston calipers. The only thing that you would need to do is to use 4 spacers or washers that are around .155" in thickness. These go in between the calipers and the spindles. This will center the calipers on to the rotors. I`m doing this conversion to my 2004 Suburban. The total cost that I have invested in this conversion is $492.89 including the cost for the GM 84847749 ceramic brake pads $107.02. It is also recommended that 18" or bigger wheels and tires are used.

I had a 2001 and a 2003 Silverado and did love those trucks, but now I'm driving a 2007 Silverado and one thing is that the steering and braking is so much better then the 01 and 03. I had 4x4's so no rack and pinion steering but my 07 does. I put a 185,000 on my 03 and only thing I did was a water pump, brakes, and the part that makes the 4x4 go into 4x4. And when I say brakes it only did the front so not sure how I got that many miles out of the rear. Funny when I bought the 03 it was that new front end and the dealer asked me if I like it, I told them I thought it looked stupid. So they wanted to know why I bought one and I told them that I cannot see the front end from the drivers seat. But I grew to love it and also the front end on the 07. I also really like the new Silverado front ends now that I have seen them in person.

Also nice choice on the Bilstien shocks. I wanted those for my truck but they were just too pricey for me at the time. I ended up getting KYB Mono Max shocks all around. Before I did both the front n rear big brake upgrade, the rear brake was binding n locking up, I did a full repair on the piston n calipers on the dual rear calipers but it is still binding n locking up still. Could it b my master cylinder? all 4 brake lines breed fluid fine, change all 4 flex hose too. When I got the truck, the brake fluid was all green n contaminated too, new fluid in there but could it b the seals in the master cylinder gone bad to not hold pressure? Brake pedal is firm when the truck is off but when u turn the truck on the brake pedal sinks down to the floor. So my guest next is to get a new master cylinder c if that is the problem. Truck is daily driving only, would u say stick to the Vacuum Booster system n not upgrade to the Hydro Booster system cux I don't really want to spend extra money the new system.

I believe its 2005 and newer, if you have a suburban with rear disc brakes though, you already have better rear discs and calipers than the 1500 trucks got, so I'd just check the fronts...

LT, I have a 99 GMC Sierra 4x4, what year of the donor trucks parts are needs for the upgrade for my truck?
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 жыл бұрын
you need rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, and pads from a 2005+ truck. I think I changed the brake flex hoses as well.

@Lawrence that common big brake kit, does it matter if you have 4x4 front diff?
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 3 жыл бұрын
this works for 2wd and 4wd trucks as they share the same spindle. in fact, now guys are doing 2020 big brake conversions because they have 4 piston calipers I think

@@LawrenceTolman I noticed. Only thing holding me back is wheel set up. My truck is lifted 6” with 35’s on 17’s rims, don’t think I’ll clear, wana do 18’s with nothing less than -12 and still have lots of sidewall. Don’t want 20’s unless I want to.

Did you have to order new upper and lower A arms for the 2/4 drop? Or did you want to get it brand new? Thanks in advance.
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 2 жыл бұрын
no, you don't have to replace the control arms, I just did because my old ones were worn out. You can easily do this with original control arms

You're very knowledgeable when it comes to these Chevy Trucks! Your videos are well constructed and executed, you are very informative, and to the point, all while being a family man! Kudos! Keep up the good work! Cheers! Quick question. Am I able to upgrade my 2003 1500 5.3 King Cab Long Bed Light Duty 2wd rear calipers, rotors, and pads with another year? Just like you mentioned for the front with a 2005. Also, how can I find out what transmission I have, and would it be fairly easy to make the truck 4WD or AWD?
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 2 жыл бұрын
yes, the rear upgrade should be the same as listed here. The most popular upgrade is to use a same year Suburban rear caliper and rotor, its a two piston and uses a thicker rotor, but will still fit inside 16" wheels. And this was a 4l80 transmission I swapped in, and if you wanted to make this truck 4wd or awd, it would be best to grab a 4wd frame from the junkyard and swap everything over.

Thanks for the quick reply! You rock! Cool, so my understanding is I don't have to go up to a 2005 for the rear. Just get the 2003 Suburban rear dual piston calipers/brackets, rotors, and pads. As far as AWD/4WD sounds like that's a lot more work than it's probably worth.. lol.

If I wanted to make it heavy duty, would I just upgrade to 8 lug?
@LawrenceTolman
@LawrenceTolman 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could swap an 8 lug rear but then you’d have mismatched front/rear. Probably not necessary unless your hauling very heavy
