In this video we will be going through 12 things that will break on your 2014-2019 GM Truck. We will be specifically talking about many issues that have occurred on my 2014 Silverado as well as other common issues across the GM lineup for those model years. These sister vehicles include the GMC Yukon and Sierra as well as the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban.

Cliff you are king of the 2014-2019 Sierra Silverado on youtube as far as Im concerned. Thank you for sharing all of these videos I have watched so many of them and taken all of your suggestions. I love my 2017 Sierra even with all these problems. It’s actually better for me because I love tinkering with my cars. One video I haven’t seen you do is addressing the transmission thermostat issue. GM has issued a TSB 21-NA-199 for the 6L80 and this works for the 8L90 as well, new thermostat triggers at 158F, old one triggered at 194F, Ive just done a thermostat bypass since the lower temp thermostat wasn’t available.

My radio acts like it’s possessed; the display will change functions by itself. It’s called Onstar twice; it will also change stations (I have Sirius satellite radio service). It can go months no problems.

haha yeah, me too. Every vehicle has issues, it is just easier to point them out on a vehicle you daily. I still love the truck and have no plans on getting rid of it.

Hahaha thats what I was thinking! I have a 2018 and it seems like a lot of those issues were fixed by then. I work for GM and it absolutely kills me to admit my truck isn't perfect 😂

I do think they fixed a lot of the problems by the 2018 model year. It's always better to buy a later edition truck rather than the first model year like I did

I've been a tech at a GM dealer for 6 years, this video is pretty spot on. Especially with the lifter failure and the torque converter failure. I have a Sierra and a Suburban transmission torn down right now because the converter failed catastrophically.

@wyatt harker, I have a question if you don't mind. I have a 2015 chevy 2500 4x4 WT the steering wheel turns left to right (not vibrate or puls) when pushing on the breaks. This left to right turning gets worse as the speed drops past 20 mph. I have had the pitman arm, control box, tiered ends, shocks, break lines and calipers replaced. The break fluid was burnt. This has lessoned since then but still accurs ramdomly twice in 7 months . Cold or hot weather rainy or dry, length of time driving dosent seem to matter. It has been to my local dealer and all they do is blame the tires. My mechanic did the front end work.

@@thisdj83 if its completely gone your car will just shut off when you try to put it in gear. if its going out, it'll jerk pretty hard shifting at lower speed 30-40mph

So thankful for this video. I have a 2016 silverado. Only had it for 4 months at 63k miles when the transmission when out. Truck is also maxed at 98 mph and was wanting to get it tuned until you explained the drive shaft problem. I love this truck and plan on making the right investments to keep it running

I'm glad I talked my daughter out of buying any GM/FORD products. I helped purchased a new 2016 Sienna. Motor is super smooth. Trans is super smooth. 265k thusly. She just purchased a 2021 Tundra. So far a road trip to Oklahoma was very good. No issues as of this yet.

This was a good video. I bought my truck at about 140 thousand miles. It is a 2014 4 wheel drive double cab. Fortunately, I have not seen many of these issues. The biggest issue that I have had is the fact that I did recently change all of the control arms, and now I have to replace all of the rotors and the pads front and rear. Also, I did end up needing to do some work with the venting system in the fuel line.

Thank you so much for this video. The 2 piece drive shaft will definitely be an upgrade on my 2015. The sad part is the powers that be at GM will see this video and won’t make any improvements. There’s NO WAY these vehicles should have problems with lifters in 2022.

Yeah I have a 2019 Sierra I bought brand new and I just got mine out the shop for lifters fail only have 16k miles I will be getting rid of it soon never had lifters issues with my 2013 Avalanche because I bought it used and soon as I got it I bought a Diablo I3 Tuner to delete the AFM

Plus the bloody cost of these trucks is freaking insane!!!! They are priced like a luxury car. They are not worth the price. You would have to be crazy to buy a new truck from GM. I admit they are handsome trucks and I love the way they look and sound but fuck!!! Who wants to pay 60k$ for a piece of Chinese shit!!! Not me. I will buy a Tundra.

Helpful and detailed discussion. Thanks! I had a 2015 Silverado LTZ full crew for three years and now have a 2016 Escalade. Of the issues listed, I have experienced "unsure" shifting in the Silverado. I get some of that in the Escalade with the 8 speed but have concluded it is trying to short shift under light throttle and there are just a lot of gears to move through. More noticeable when cold and in Sport mode. In Touring mode, not noticeable. Under heavy throttle or manually shifting all is smooth. When asked about deleting AFM, my trusted shop tech said just keep the oil changed. I may have him do it anyway. Escalade has 60k on it. Lifetime mileage of 18.4 with several tanks in low 20s. Comfortable, capable, and fast. Great vehicle.

It’s insane to me how many issues and fixes you are having with that truck. I was/am a Chevy guy until I owned a 2014 z71 Silverado. It was a good truck until I had the condenser fail at 109k miles. I paid Chevy dealership to fix it and 9 months later the compressor blew a hole out the bottom so the ac went down again. Drove it for almost two whole Texas summers until I decided to spend the money to fix it again. Unfortunately before I could do that the transmission went down and cost me $5079 to fix. So I went over two years with no AC on a truck I was paying on, it was infuriating! The transmission guys were telling me my rear end was in trouble as well as the transfer case. Needless to say once I found out how much it was worth in this crazy market (even with no AC) I traded it in, couldn’t get rid of it fast enough at 144000 miles, which blows my mind. I was planning on keeping it forever, silly me. Now I’m looking for a 1995 Chevy step side single cab for my lifelong truck companion. The wife can have a new car with payment but I need something that will never die for work.

Jason...its gunna get hard to keep those older GM trucks...i've keep a couple around cuz they were easy to work on and you could find parts anywhere. Now that the last of those OBS's is over 20 years old, dealerships don't stock parts and the aftermarket parts are going away too...its a nightmare tracking down parts for the K2500 and K3500 trucks...just sayin

Great video on all the problems, I’ve experienced a few of them myself on my 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. Two other problems I have had: 1. Warped exhaust manifold apparently caused by mixed metals which occurred around 65k. Luckily I replaced the gasket and was able to get it flattened out with a belt sander 2. While replacing that I also noticed the ground wire going to the engine block had also lost a portion of its insulation. It appeared to occur due to the factory cable heat tape not going far enough up the cable so the cable would get warm and broke the insulation where it flexes between the frame rail and block

I purchased the Range Technologies module from my 13 Yukon SLT when my truck had 38k on the odometer. I now have almost 150k and I have not had any problems with the AFM. I plan on doing a mechanical AFM delete in the future. Thanks for this great channel.

I have that same rattle in the knee panel. I've had my dealer fix it once already and it's definitely annoying. I've also just fixed a front impact sensor pigtail that litterly rubbed through from the wire loom. I've had 3rd brake light leak as well. 2016 1500

I'm a lifelong GM guy, but in 2007 bought an Xterra new (built on the Titan platform, sharing transmissions etc). It has been eye opening. Guys, we bought it new, it now has 270,000 miles on it and I've replaced the starter and the radiator. That is it. I'm a storm chaser so it spends hours and hours idling while I wait for storms to fire. I pull utility poles and trees out of the road, I chase tornadoes, hurricanes, ice storms, blizzards etc, its seen a hard life. Watching this video gave me flashbacks to my life of constantly wrenching on my GM cars.....this is ridiculous. I always hated the import guys barfing about how much better theirs cars/trucks were built. Now......I get it. Unfortunately, if you need to tow heavy or carry a big payload, Toyota, Nissan, Honda can't get it done. But there is no reason why GM can't build a quality 3500 HD truck like Nissan or Toyota would do it.

I grew up a chevy guy and when I went to look at buying a truck I naturally started looking into Silverados. I already wasn't a fan of the DOD in the newer Silverados and the problems that came with that, but then I started to learn about the other problems with these trucks and decided to go with an F-150 with the 5.0 and I'm loving it so far. Unfortunately now the 2021 and newer generations of F-150 now have DOD.

Here in GA, a family was just awarded 1.2 Billion dollars because of the F150 roof defect. Many people have been killed because the roof of the 150 is too weak to support the truck rolling over. Google it and you will be amazed at how many have failed and been deadly.

I have a 2018 6.2 Sierra Denali. Bought with 75k miles tuned out DOD. Lifter failure at around 95k, had lifters replaced under warranty. Tuned DOD out and lifters never saw deactivation, the new lifters failed at like 119k anyways. This time it took the cam and motor with it. Put in new 6.2 did a DOD delete, BTR cam, and ls7 lifters. Using my HP Tuners Whipple tune with no problem tens of thousands of miles later. I also use jlt catch can. Also have 2.9L Whipple blower... And swapped out all fluids throughout the entire truck for Amsoil including trans fluid.

That's it! I gonna buy a 🐎 as in, hay burner. Hay goes in....gas comes out with a lot of s.....! 4x4 ability, 4 speeds mostly, uses water coolant, overflow hose, no quarter panel fins, but does have a broomtail. Have to change shoes more often, but they cost less. Bling.....Concho on saddle. Moon roof so to speak, that leaks. Good off road too.

I’ve had a 2014 Sierra 1500 5.3L as a work truck and I own a 2015 Sierra 2500hd 6.0L. One issue that both of these trucks has had is the blend door actuator failing causing the driver side climate control to blow warm air. Dealer wants to remove the dash but you can replace it yourself by removing the glove box, two computers and worming your hand up in the dash. It’s a real pain but it beats paying the 1500$ in labor that the dealer wants! The 2500 had the torque converter go at 140k miles. It would whine at cold start up. The 1500 had the brake booster go and was a 800$ repair and then gm eventually recalled them for this. The worst failure on that truck was the radiator. It developed a small and slow leak at the end caps and was 2000$ to replace it. Apparently this is very common on 2014 trucks. This truck also burns a bit of oil too, 1-2 quarts between 5k oil changes. I replaced both cv axles on the truck too (may have been caused by the 2” leveling kit but who knows). The company got rid of the truck at 120k miles but I did not have any issues with the afm or torque converter.

Good summary of your issues thanks! I haven't had the radiator issue but several have reported it. I wonder if mine was replaced before I got the truck. First person mentioning the blend door so I'll be curious to see if anyone else has that issue. Thanks!

I had a 2015 Silverado for 7 years, 90,000 miles. 0 problems. Replaced a battery and a set of tires. Never had to replace the brake pads even. Just regular maintenance. It's either going to last forever or all fall apart. I traded it in for a 2021 Sierra with some sentimental remorse, but I'm happy.

I own an 08 Silverado 2500 HD, 2 WD....it's been the best truck I have ever owned, almost 325 K miles on it. Keeping preventive maintenance up is the key!

Thank you for this video! I recently considered buying a used 2019 silverado z71, and on the test drive, I noticed a small shake or vibration coming from the rear at 70 mph on the test drive. The salesman said it was probably from the tires. However, it had brand new tires, so I didn't believe him. Also, when I asked if it had the lifters replaced, he said no,there wasn't any need. However, it had some lifter tick. Now, granted, these issues could have been minor, but it was enough for we to walk away. I'm saddened with all these issues with Chevy Trucks nowadays. I'm seriously just considering replacing the engine and driveline in my current 1997 gmc Sierra as it's a solid ,reliable, long-lasting driveline. Not to mention, doing so is a lot cheaper than a newer truck. Thanks again 😊

Fluid Film is great for protecting the frame. I sprayed it on the wax and it helped keep the wax soft. If you do apply it right onto the wax you need to avoid washing the frame with a pressure washer because the water pressure will cause the wax to spray off, leaving bare spots. If you coat the frame well with FF, the stuff does a great job protecting the metal. Even if it's rusty, FF will soak in and creep into hard to reach areas and crevices. It's a yearly job though.

@@TheSundaeDrive I haven't had any issues but I made a point to keep the spray on the frame and avoid directly hitting anything rubber or wire harness. I have used it every year since 2014.

2007.5 is when GM came out with the AFM. They denied that the oil consumption was a problem. When they finally admitted that it was a problem, they said they would warranty it if it wasn't over 100,000 miles. So a lot of people got fk'd over by GM because by that time they had already gotten over that amount of miles by putting up with the consumption or fixing the issue themselves. Whatever happen to the Lemon Law. GM, Ford and Dodge all should be held accountable for the shit they are building. And they wonder why people are buying Toyota? All the problems listed here in this video should be warrantied!!!

I agree 100% an unfortunately GM has reduced the power train warranty to 60 miles I believe so most things are going l fail after that point. They aren't building things to last sadly.

The fluid film is a great suggestion! I use it on my 05 Silverado I hopefully caught it in time with a few minor replaces! But they rot! Enjoy the channel my 05 is my fourth chevy and a great truck! Looking at new ones maybe I’ll wait for the 2023s.

I bought my 2016 silverado custom 4x4 with 119k. A few months in, I started seeing all these videos with problems. So far, just over a year later and now with 140k on the clock and haven't had one issue yet besides the thermostat and thermo sensor. The one thing I did notice while pulling a heavy trailer uphill is my Trans temp was higher than expected. So, eventually, I'll see about getting that part to help with overheating. Other than that ,I'll be counting my blessings and hope this truck keeps running strong. Great video!

I have a 2014 Silverado and before 70,000 miles I had to replace the electronic brake control module that is on the fire wall in the brake booster. This breakdown showed up on the dashboard as a check engine other than a brake problem. My mechanic did the work.

I used to have a 2014 LTZ with the 6.2l engine. I will say the mechanical issues you mentioned here. I had every one of them, including a completely trashed motor from a DOD lifter failure at 12k. I also had a torque converter replaced at like 20k as well as a transmission since it had a terrible case of the shudders that could not be fixed, and this one was a 6 speed. I also had lots of surface rust on the frame and the leaky third brake light. Mine was a shakerado as well, from 65-70mph it was really bad. A few things i did not see mentioned here. First is the radiator. The early 2014 trucks has issues with the radiator cracking at the seam on the drivers side. They had a TSB on it, mine got a new radiator at 15k. I had to wait two weeks for a radiator at the time since they were all out of stock. Second, oil cooler lines. GM has had issues with these leaking at the crimp for years. Every gM truck i have ever owned had had to have them replaced. Third is brakes, my truck used to warp rotors every 20k like clockwork, you could set your watch to it. Next is the sunroof if you have one, the little covers that cover all the mechanical bits, they fall down constantly. I had to glue mine with weatherstrip adhesive to get it to stop. Another one if you live in a place with bad roads like i do in New England, lower ball joints and front wheel bearings. Had to have both sides done multiple times in the 75k i owned it. It was literally an annual thing for me. Spring time meant new ball joints and wheel bearings. Scone it was under GM warranty or major guard i never had to pay for a wheel alignment ever ;) Last one is that pesky exhaust flapper valve deal that rusts itself shut. GM replaced my exhaust for it twice in 5 years. Beyond those things i had plenty of other non systemic issues with that truck and i dumped it promptly when my service contract was up at 75k.

@@kerlioclassics6440 Yep.... It sucks to order your dream truck with a sticker of almost 60k and have it be a total POS. Its the reason i ditched GM and bought a RAM in 2019. FWIW, the RAM has been flawless. I dont see myself ever going back to a GM.

Great vid! My 2018 Chevy Silverado 4x4 Crew 1500 had these issues.... Tail gate mechanism only worked on one side... the plastic clips broke inside, dealer repaired under warranty, wiring harness rubbed through 4 wires along frame by drivers side front due to no clips holding it in place, every time it rained, truck had issues with engine codes, starter went out at 3years old only 70K miles on it. Torque converter was slipping when I had eneough of itso traded in on a 2021 Sierra.

I fixed my Silverado permanently, I traded it in for a Tundra and it has been perfect!! Who knew the 2004 Silverado would be the prized truck on the used market - last good truck GM had.

02 Silverado 1500 with 265k on it. Original tranny, just replaced cat, possible exhaust manifold failure somewhere. It ticks under load tied to rpms.

Glad to find this video. I run a 2018 Silverado, currently has 578,000 miles on it and goes through a trans every 150k or so. Some of the other issues have come up, others haven't yet but good info to have in your video. Btw, first engine was at 474k.

Why would the transmissions be going out that often thats ridiculous 150k life for a trans? My 07 caravan has 350k on the original and shifts like a dream. Simple 4 speed. A truck thats worth that much money eats how many? Makes no sense

This video is literally saving me so much money!! I’m having the torque converter issues (at least I believe that’s what the issue is), the dash rattle, and weird battery cable issues, replaced the whole radio and computers behind. 2016 ltz with 65k. Appreciate all the knowledge!

I have all of those problems except the rear window defog. I have also had air conditioner crack and vacuum pump go. Sold my 2014 Sierra with only 50000 miles. Will never buy a gmc product again

I feel lucky. 184,000 miles on a 2014 LTZ Z71 crew cab and the only one of these issues I've had was the condenser, and that was caused by a radiator leak small enough that it never leaked onto the ground. Living in Arizona, I feel like the heat conditions for transmissions and engines are much greater here than most anywhere else, so I must have been really lucky.

2017 Silverado 4x4 now at 197k miles. Trans went out at 118k miles. Also replaced fuel pump (140k miles), AC condenser (125k miles), driver side CV axle (160k miles), and had to replace full AC system (compressor, condenser, evaporator) this last summer at 190k miles. I’ve never installed a tuner to do away with the AFM but the motor still purrs like a kitten.

I'm still riding my 2004 Tahoe...just hit 300K and it still runs like a sewing machine! Other than oil changes (I use Havoline full synthetic and run 5k between charges) and brake pads I've only had to replace the starter (150k), the water pump (250k) and I just had a rear main seal put on last week. I replaced all the shocks and suspension bushings at 180k just because I figured it was time. My dad's got a 2014 Silverado 1500 that just hit 100K and the only thing that's broken on his truck is a door handle, which literally took me less than 30 mins to replace! I'm pretty sure it does help that I live in Alabama where we typically have really mild winters! Now let me go find a piece of wood to knock on! 😂😂😂

Good to hear XJ. I traded my 2005 Avalanche a couple years ago with 135K on it. Other than oil, tires and fluid changes I replace a gas cap, tailgate handle, the fuel tank pressure sensor, the battery a couple of times and a rear window regulator in the 15 years I owned it. Does the saying, "They don't make them like they use too." come to mind? ;-)

These are amazing tips! Thank you for this video! In 2013 September I Bought my 2014 Sierra V6 SLE with 3 miles on it. Currently 108k and only issues are driver door automatic lock/unlock is broken, driver seat auto raise and lower motor is broken.

Thanks for heads up on these things. 2016 Sierra 1500 w/ 68,000 miles here. No issues at all, knock on wood. Only regular maintenance thus far- needs a new battery (starts get sluggish in real cold weather), changed tires at 61K, front brakes at 67K, and wipers. Got it rust proofed this past summer and I'm hoping for best!

I have a 2016 GMC Sierra. plugged in the range technology 89,000 miles later still runs good . But GM did replace my torque converter under warranty and changed my transmission fluid to a different mobile 1 trans fluid. No issues after that.

I have an interesting addition to the lifter conversation. I have a 2010 Silverado with the 5.3L As of now Jan - 2023 I have 301,187 on the clock for milage. I have had to do one set of lifters and this was partially my fault. I have tuned out the DOD with a diablo tech tuner. Which I also used to firm up the shifting of the trans. I do not run the engine tune any more as this is now the wife unit. Tuning out the DOD will make the lifers not collapse. There for they don’t have to open back up. Oil pressure forces the collapse and holds the lifter closed. However a spring is needed to open the lifter back up to operating height to activate the valve. If there is any build up in the lifter from oil varnish the lifter will stick closed and you will lose one or more cylinders. At its heart the lifter issue is a dirt problem, in my opinion. One good step is the addition of an Amsoil BMK23 the dual remote bypass filter. When I installed mine at 100K it pulled 1.1 pounds worth of dirt out of the motor as measured by the weight difference between old and new filters when full of oil. Long story short at truck was running fine 24x,xxx miles the mechanic and I played around and needed to turn on DOD for a tank of fuel and it did not run even 3 miles with out the lifter dyeing. TLDR from personal experience with a sample size of one. A LOT of life can be added to the lifters with a tune out, not a range device but a computer flash and a Amsoil BMK23 on the truck. Firming up the transmission sifting was also done because of torque converter failure on a 2010 6l80. Transmission specialist told me it was from allowed slippage when going in to lockup it’s a truck so I don’t mind the firmer shifting and actually prefer it and the reduction in clutch ware that comes with or so I have been told.

The exploding rear glass was fixed a couple of years ago at least for my 17 Silverado High Country. It had a recall they pulled the fuse out of it for like 4 months until parts were available then replaced the contacts or something on the rear glass. Haven't had any issues and i use it alot up here in Canada during the winter months.

This video just popped up in my feed which is helpful since I just bought a 2016 Sierra last month (September) because my '95 Sierra was stolen. It has 150k on the odometer and the dealer I bought it from actually had the transmission done because of that torque converter shake. I did add a obd override for the afm and it does make a difference in driving feel. But now I'm going to save up to do the full delete as I usually keep my vehicle for a long time. I own a 2014 Silverado 1500 LT definitely love the truck n your channel n learned a lot from you so Thank You n keep the info coming. No flaking paint per say but have rust bubbles on driver's side doors n bed wheel wells. Also had issue w/ the transfer case locking up in 4 high or 4 low when it got really Cold n it was in "Auto", wouldn't return to 2 wheel . Also had the wires for the driver's side rear door lock n window break in the harness from the body to the door. But all in all still love the truck. Thanks Again JD

I believe the engine problem that called for dealerships to replace parts prior to sale had to do with faulty valve springs. Apparently a batch of springs weren't heat treated properly and will fail very quickly, sometimes after only a few thousand miles. It doesn't take much to imagine the damage created by a shattered valve spring.

They haven’t fixed a damn thing. My 2020 trailboss had lifters and rods replaced before 15k miles. It pissed me off so bad I traded the piece of junk in for a new ranger. Quality seems much better. I tell anyone that’ll listen to stay away from anything GM

WOW, wish I’d have known this 3 years ago. Would’ve saved me a Bunch of $$$. I have a 2016 LTZ two wheel drive Silverado truck. It’s the 5.3 V8 with the 6L80 transmission. I use basically for my mobile sales office. I drive ~ 45k miles a year. I’m currently at 228k miles and just this week put my 2nd transmission in. My miles are 75-80% highway miles and I don’t tow anything or carry any heavy payloads. I just drive a lot and on highway it’s usually 75-85 mph. No Chevy shake but apparently two torque converters have gone bad and ruined my transmission. The first time I was exactly at 100k no warning at all. Transmission started slipping and heard some metal on metal. Went into limp mode and it was all she wrote. Had to raise hell to get Chevy to help with the expense. I paid $1,500 of the $6k so they’d give me the 100k mile warranty on the new one. No one bothered to tell me the torque converters were crap so I just thought it was an anomaly that it went out that quick with mainly highway miles like that. So new transmission just got to 228k (128k miles on new one) and again no warning getting close to home the engine light comes on and then dash says “Transmission Hit Idle Speed”. I pull off highway and let it cool from 210 down to 140 and drive it home. Started slipping at the end. Tried to drive it to the dealership and it would shift properly and was making noises so had it towed in. Service Mgr is a friend there. Said torque converter went bad and screwed up transmission and it needed replacing. He went on to say these things like fresh fluid and it should be changed every 50k miles. Haha, 😭 they had just done it 30k miles ago when they were putting in a new oil pump and leaking rear main seal and servicing the transmission. I had a 2021 Yukon while the repair was being done. I kept looking at the transmission temp and never saw it over 150*. Got mine back with new $5,700 transmission and watched the temp and it seems after warming up to run at 190 to 200 degrees. So I agree that for a $55k truck that doesn’t get stressed at all by towing or cargo that it’s crap and high temps must be a culprit. Unfortunately, I’ve spent around $10k in repairs in 5 1/2 years. If I had known that the torque converters tended to blow before 120k miles I would have bit the bullet and replaced it. If they know it’s crap then it sure seems like they make a better one or minimally recommend changing it before it blows and destroys the tranny. I’m very curious to know more about the TSB that cools the transmission down. Other than that I love my truck so please fill me in about it.

I'm sorry to hear that man. The torque converters are definitely bad 😔 I would highly suggest swapping out to a new torque converter before you hit 330K and if you plan to keep it that long I would do a top end refresh soon with a new cam and lifters so you can avoid afm failure.

I am driving an 03 F150 and it has been by far the best truck I have ever owned. Rust is my only problem. That right side exhaust manifold is leaking again and my bed is pretty much gone. I have been looking at used Chevys because it seems I can find them cheeper than the Fords. This video just reminds me that just because its newer and more expensive that dosent mean it wont give you trouble. Maybe I will just keep what I have.

My AC condenser has already been replaced on my 2017 Silverado, so you were spot on about that problem. I changed my tranny fluid at 50k miles after I heard about the T-converter having issues, and it looked like it had been used to fry a turkey. I now change my trans fluid at every oil change (5k miles)…hopefully by keeping fresh fluid it will prolong the life of it. I have 70k miles now and have my fingers crossed. I don’t understand why GM dealers can’t do more to financially assist with repairs when they have known design flaws in the converters.

I have a 2015 Silverado and I'm getting the transmission rebuild now for $5,600. get rid of it if you can. My transmission was making noise when I left the dealership. It was brand new with 76 miles on it. I've had to replace the entire wiring system, air conditioner system, water pump, all the tire transmitter sensors. I've done so much work to my truck it's unbelievable. Please get rid of your truck if you can. I've had over $14,000 in repairs on my over the years.

I haven't got far into the video but one issue I had with my 2014 silverado was the air blowing hot. After while of knowing it was a leak it ended up being a bad condenser. The weld for the hose was weak and cracked open

My 2018 sierra with the 8 speed tranny started the shuttering and it only has 42000 miles. I got a transmission fluid flush and put a good quality fluid that actually comes with a warranty also. I changed the transfer case to the good fluid and also power steering pump. But I must say, listening to all these “KNOWN” problems really shows that GM/Chevy really does not care about their customers.

Im at 225k on my 15 z71, aside from regular maintenance, its great. That being said Ive replaced the ac condenser twice now, my ac is legit the only problem I’ve had.

Turn off the AFM as soon as you get the truck. Get a Jasper transmission they fixed the problem. They use a billet torque converter and some of the flow problems as well. I had to replace the transmission in the last 2 weeks.

Turning it off right away may extend the life of the lifters but doesn't prevent the failure unfortunately. Jasper transmission isn't a bad idea for sure! If mine goes I'll be looking into aftermarket options for sure.

my dad got an upgraded condensor and it is better than stock for sure. i live in texas so ac is vital and it went out for like 2 weeks, wasnt fun. that upgrade with the condensor changes the truck for sure. great vid!

@@TheSundaeDrive the shop that ended up doing it didnt really tell him. all they told him was the could replace it with oem witch would likely have the same issue later down the road, or they could upgrade it and it would work for a long time. he chose the best option lol

Had a 2013 Silverado 6.2 replaced it with a Tundra after one of my lifters took out the camshaft. All the quality issues will keep me far away from ever buying a new GM truck anytime soon.

The rear sliding window was replaced for a recall, also a relay was replaced. I have replaced my shocks with upgraded bilstein 5100 series. That was a huge improvement. I believe my rad is starting to leak. I cannot find any residue yet, but I am loosing coolant and can smell it by the ds headlight when it's up to temperature.

The radiators seem to be another common problem. I lose coolant, sometime notice hot moisture under the hood at the driver side headlight, and dried orange goo collecting on the outer shroud, looks like tree sap drippingout. 2013 Yukon 5.3L 164k mi

One other thing comes to mind is the GDI (direct injection) catch can will help with that and pretty cheap. Glad to see I have most of these issues covered or at least I hope it helps. 17 Silverado- JLT catch can, sure-cool trans thermostat delete , range afm disabler, steel driveshaft from axle exchange in Fairfield NJ, and keep up with the frame coating maintenance. So far so good! Love the truck. The 6l80 is a little rough shifting sometimes but other than that no real complaints! Great video!

@@TheSundaeDrive Do people hear themselves? Ask yourselves why you need a catch can. It's because GM screwed up and they aren't providing a fix. Spend 80,000 dollars on a truck and one needs a catch can?? Why isn't GM fixing their problem? Oil consumption has been a problem with both the AFM and DOD in which GM year after year keeps building them anyway. Just like Ford and their spark plug problem. Just keep building it and people will buy it anyway. UGH!

Catch can is helpful on any direct injection motor. We install them on BMWs all the time too (we have a bmw shop). Due to the design of direct injection, fuel doesn't clean off the valves so they get carbon build up over time. Separate thing from afm.

Had a 2014 Silverado Z71 5.3 with the 6l80e. Sold the truck with around 114,000 miles. I serviced the truck every 5,000 miles and had no lifter issues. (Afm was disabled around 89k) Only issue I ever had with the truck was the Ac condenser failing right at 105k. Other then that it was a excellent truck. I will say that 99-07 classic trucks in my opinion are alot more reliable. I am in Alabama so no rust issues here. I love the 14-18 trucks but all I hear about is the torque converters failing. I hate it because I am a Chevy guy. Keep up the great videos man!

Good video. I have a 2015 GMC Yukon. Problems so far now have 160k miles. AC compressor, had to rebuild transmission (6 speed), both LED tail lights, latch on center console lid 4x, paint on hood and top is fading. Now having trouble with thermostat assembly. Oh well.

Wow, thanks for the very informative video. I have a 2014 Silverado and these are some of my problems. 1. Headlights are extremely hazy/foggy and can't be cleaned. 2. The 110 outlet stopped working. The fuse is not blown and it make a click sound when I plug something into the 110 outlet. 3. The airbag sensor is on. Please advise with any and all suggestions. Thank you in advance.

2014 Silverado presently157,000 miles. AC condenser broke at around 70,000 miles, and disks and pads around 100,000. Torque converter failed at 144,000, bought a complete rebuilt transmission with 3 year unlimited mileage warrantee for $2200 and paid $900 to install, also changed catalytic converter at the same time. Yes have the dashboard rattle (on top) took everything apart, with no resolve. All else has been good. thanks for your info. Oh I also have the chevy shake at 75mph, tried many things including replacement of driveshaft with OEM, but no cigar

Same, selling my 2014 and 2015 soon for a yota. Nothing but issues, top end been rebuilt ( afm/dod lifters....trash ), rebuilt transmissions, lower ball joints literally snapped and truck collapsed to the ground, gas cap not clicking and causing a code, electrical issues from a ground done wrong from the factory under driver side stereo dash speaker.....blah blah and so on. Fvck all that Im buying older trucks from now on.

After your videos I have decided against buying a GM truck period so thanks for the videos glad I checked them out before making a used vehicle purchase. Watched similar types of videos on the Fords in the same years and they are no where near as problematic as far as I can see.

I have a 2018 Silverado with 76k. I put my the transmission in manual and bump it to 5th so AFM doesn’t kick in.I feel some hesitation/ shake when I lay in the gas some. Only other issue so far was a bad starter.

Shortly after buying my 2016 I deleted the AFM with a diablo tuner. Wrapped the exhaust Y-pipe. Plugged the rear frame tubes preventing water spray and moisture getting into them. Most importantly I added a catch can to the PCV system. I have always been in question about the direct injection engines not keeping the intake valves clean by fuel spray as port and throttle body injection does. I don't have any long term feed back as my Silverado is under 15Kmi. and only driven on nice days. Great content. Thanks.

Hi Cliff, very interesting and scary at the same time. My 2018 is at the dealer as I'm typing getting it's second H.P. fuel pump replaced at only 18000 mi. First was after 2 weeks of ownership and a couple hundred mi., (P0175 code). Other than that it's been pretty flawless as it should be with such low mileage. The thing that really bugs me about this truck is the total disconnect between my right foot and the engine, I call it AFM lag. Dealership says nothing can be done, get used to it. Guess maybe do the delete once the ext. warranty is up. The only other thing worth mentioning is the 2-3 shifts are inconsistent, from butter smooth to a heavy snap. Dealer "reset" the computer twice, seems better for a while but reverts back. Question; are the AFM lifters less prone to failure on the later models as compared to the "14 and '15 models? Reading the comments leads me to believe so. Could the Range stay in 8 module unit help the drivability on these later trucks if valvetrain is more robust?

Crazy your fuel pump went twice already. Unfortunately the lifters are not any better from what I have seen. You can definitely get custom tuning done to help with the pedal response.

The range helps and I would recommend it while under warranty. As soon as you are out of warranty I would do a physical delete of the afm system. Don't let the dealer see a range plugged in or anything else as they will probably void the warranty tho

I’ve had Range plugged in before my 2018 6.2 had 10k now at 65k and no issues at all. I did leave it plugged in once at the dealership when I went to get a oil change but they said nothing. I did develop trans shutter and had the dealership do the trans oil change at 58k just before warranty expired. I thought it was my tires until a bud was riding with me and new about the issue. I’m 66 yo and this will probably be my last new truck, I’ll probably do a cam lifter change on it at some point.

I have a 2016 GMC Sierra (Tri-Colo White), and I have had just a pea size section of paint just come off on the rear of my cab. Lost my AC last year. I've also lost my rear driver side window regulator and motor twice now. Same one! Both OEM!

My transmission guy explained to me it's not the 6L80E's torque converter, it's the pump. The pump starts going out and can send a huge spike in pressure. That spike takes out the converter. Above my pay grade but that was how he explained it to me and how people have recurring issues because they stay with the same pump.

I ordered my 2017 GM V-8 half ton brand new, and it arrived with about 700 tiny paint imperfections mostly on the sides that looked like course sand or tiny gravel pitting. I suggested to the dealer that it happened on the transport truck or train, but he said it was the second year of GM's new latex paint and that quite a few vehicles had these problems: "if you don't like it, I will sell it to somebody else, no problem" he said. A recent problem is that sometimes when i back up the tranny makes a thunk noise, or moaning noises! So i named the truck the Ghost Buster. Would that be the torque-converter do you think? It has about 80,000 miles on it.

The paint peeling is a very known problem with gm, it’s due to not spraying the paint on the wet sealer, the sealer dries by the time it’s ready to paint, and once the sealer is dry it needs a mechanical etch to keep paint from peeling

My 2017 crew cab/short bed LTZ 4wd 5.3L 8spd (completely stock other than a 2” level): *Slight driveline vibration at 78-80mph. *Touch screen doesn’t work. *Slight (intermittent) vibration at idle (feels like a misfire but not a misfire). *And a clunk from the rear every now and then when driving a really low speeds through a parking lot

Pretty spot on. I work at GM power train in Toledo where we make the 6,8 and 10 speed rwd transmission. As well as the GF9 FWD. Me and most of my buddies have these trucks. I have. A buddy with a 14 5.3 that lost the high pressure fuel pump at 88k then 2k miles later had a lifter collapse. He also had the roof antenna leak and rear window shatter.He always had oil changed at dealer. Another buddy has 225k on his 5.3 with zero issues. He hasn't even changed antifreeze but uses mobile one severe duty stuff every 7500 miles. His 6l80 started shuddering real bad at 75k but he drove it that way till 150k till he decided to replace trans. He hasn't changed either diff or transfer case fluids and tows an 18' boat thousands of miles a year. My 2019LD just hit 29k and I'm gonna change all fluids and have dealer change tstat on trans. For what it's worth guys at work that know cars we won't touch anything for sale with an 8speed but the 10 speed seems to be really good so far. BTW the gen 2 launch of the 8l80/90 is underway they now calibrate the valve body assembly wet in house before final assembly. This was believed to be an issue with shifting issues in the 8 speed.

appreciate that insight. It is interesting how some last forever and some seem to have all the issues. I have heard the 8 speeds are to be avoided but the 10 speeds seem to be good. Good to know that is true from someone on the inside.

@@TheSundaeDrive yea Ford and GM collaborated on the design of the 10 speed variants. When we got that 10 speed work we almost doubled the size of the plant with new brick and mortar back added back in 2016. That side of the plant is a clean room where you have to walk through a air blower and wear a special smock. The biggest issue with any transmission is sediment. We'll be getting rid of all assembly lines for 6l80/90 by the end of March to Make room for new EV work that we got. I believe that the Chevy express and GMC Savana are the only GM vehicles left with a 6 speed option. A huge problem with the 6 she's and even more so in my opinion the 8 speed are the amount of parts that we buy from suppliers I/e torque converters and techms. When we made the 4l60's virtually everything was made in Toledo. Half of the plant was a foundry and we made torque converters as well as all gear heat treating was done in his, we get screwed by 3rd party supplies with quality spills pretty often, a lot of times we catch them before the secondary market but not always. I did the transmission thermostat delete and my temps never get above 145 to 150 in hot summer traffic. I also wrapped the section of exhaust that passes under the pan with exhaust wrap a few years ago. Fingers crossed. Seems to be working well.
