She was at her best when she was a member of the band. When the national fame came up and grabbed her, and she left Big Brother, she began to perform kind of like an impersonation of her true self.

I grew up five miles from where Janis grew up. I'm 63 and just recently started viewing all of her videos on KZfaq. After 50 years I'm finally realizing what an amazing talent she really was. There will never be another like her.

Gurley is playing a '66 SG with a P90 on the neck and a HB on the bridge, and they feedback out of phase in a very eerie way with fat low and screeching highs, plus he picks with his thumb and index branding the notes, perfect for Janis raucous desperate blues singing. He was awesome !

The first time I heard Jannis sing was in 1968 , I was riding in a 1959 Cadillac coupe Deville ! With the first tape deck that I ever heard ! Wow She sounded great ! Later that year I went to a concert at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds and saw Her in person , I was up front just a few feet from Her ! What a performance 👏 .

I've always said that the reason Led Zeppelin became so popular is because people needed something to try to fill the void left by the geniuses who were just "there and then gone": Janis, Cream, Jimi, CCR and The Beatles.

This is a damn good description of what it seemed she was doing when she was performing. I hope she got it back occasionally, but I think she didn't get it back often enough to make it worth her pain. RIP Janis.

@@troyruss4112 We are fortunate indeed. I bought Cheap Thrills in 1973 on the recommendation of a friend. I did not listen to it before buying. I hated it. What the hell was all that screeching about? As the years passed and I returned to listen to it (I did like one or two tracks initially) it grew on me. It seems my friend was an advanced soul while I was a musical cretin. Now I love it. It moves me to tears at times. I often think of what might have been had she lived longer, but as you imply we must be grateful for the music she did create. One of the best aspects is the band, Big Brother. The booming bass guitar and the lead guitar doing its own thing. The sound invokes the times, loud rock bands in concert halls. I wish I had been there.

The harmony w Big Brother and the Holding Company's unbearably expressive nd painful feeling is so incredible it hurts too much! I was so lucky they played at ucd dances often, and I and friends saw them at Fillmore East later. But here I hear the instruments clearer and the grief in the song. I love Big Brother n the Holding Co. and Kozmic Blues Band and others. Whenever I would come home after braving the snobs of North Berkeley to buy food, I put on the record and say, "They probably wouldn't like her either" and I heard Sunroof Cadillac on the radio.

There have been a lot of great - REALLY GREAT female blues artists such as Bonnie Raiit, Bessie Smith, Dinah Wasington, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and others, but nobody has ever risen above Janis Joplin. When she sang it was as if her soul came out of her vocal cords to embelish our ears. Those who were able to hear her sing live were very, very fortunate.

I have read the comments. Every song on pearl was my favorite, the last song buried alive in the blues she had no vocals. I was a teenager and I remember hearing piece of my heart. I was only 12. She blew me away. I can't forget her. Her town treated her so bad. I loved her.

Nobody could sing like this before her...nobody could sing like this after her. And it's not just the way she sings and screams with perfect intonation, it's the way she feels what she sings. This is the biggest difference with the music of today...I hope this emptiness is going to end someday

Every trapped crap generation that keeps getting farther and further away from the souls reality of such truth..We as a species within that gap, will dry up & wither away like individual leaves in a mosquito larvae filled pond.Then alot like the present,become as dissipated puddles of rain,forward into false sun dried up droplets,or even towards the end, to end-up as empty spiritless water stains!

Yes pippoMaso: this was pure music art! The day she died I felt an emptiness in my music world! And I cringe at what they call music nowadays! I cringe at what they called singing nowadays! Thank God we have recordings! I turned on a black lady friend of mine to Janis Joplin: and I told her you want to hear some soul?!? Listen to this! And my friend was super surprised to find out that the singer was white!!

BBHC is still one of my favorite group of musicians. Dave Getz (80 yrs old) & Peter Albin still play. James Gurley and Sam Andrews died, both were in their 70s

Breathless...speechless..nearly in tears. She left her heart as well as her soul on the floor. I've loved Janis since the early 70's. Somehow I missed this version of Ball and Chain till now. Scuse me while I pick my own heart and soul up off the floor.

On February 19, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California Big Brother and the Holding Company shared the night with Jefferson Airplane. Grace Slick,Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Paul Kantner put on a great show, but Big Brother and the Holding Company blew them away: it was like a firecracker compared to an M80. Standing right at the foot of the stage was a great place for me to experience both groups, and when Janis exploded with that voice, and James Gurley played notes that didn't exist anywhere else, what a phenomenon! That there is footage of Big Brother and the Holding Company is great for music history. That a new generation is hearing this group and liking them is great! Get your hands on the early LPs if you can.
