I was lucky enough to see Janis in Concert in Jan.1970, I was am still am a huge fan of Janis Joplin and after all these years after Janis's untimely death I still have three different paintings of Janis hanging on my wall. It's hard to explain in words how the great talent that Janis had has effected my life over these many years. Janis is an Icon and Legend in the history of "Rock & Roll" and thanks to KZfaq we are still able to enjoy the great talent that Janis shared with the musical world. There will never be another Janis Joplin and as I said thanks to KZfaq we are still able to just sit back and enjoy the music Janis left with us.

Who was it said, you're pretty much going to love the music that was playing when you first got laid. We were young and impressionable, but people like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, and David Bowie showed us the way out of our teenage lives. Love the San Francisco sound here. We took a family trip through SF in the 60's I wanted to jump out of the car and stay. Live up here now.

My brother brought home Cheap Thrills when I was maybe 11 years old. It remains some of the best guitar interplay, between Andrew and Gurley, that I've ever heard! Sad to learn this evening that Sam passed last year. Great to see this tonight! Really, man, thanks for putting this up!

I'm lucky enough to have all my mom's Janis Joplin albums. I knew when my mom was cleaning the house on a Saturday morning when all you heard was Janice blasting through the house.lol. I knew it was time to wake up. Cuz she would have it on full volume didn't even care if I was asleep. I miss those days.

This concert is in 1967 not 1968. I saw them in their first east coast appearance on Feb.17,1968 in NYC with BB King. I was so taken I flew to San Francisco on the 19th and stayed a month going to the Avalon and Fillmore West....Trippin' out

This is a very interesting timepiece although someone should correct the date as it is incorrect. As others brought up in the comments this was in 1967 before the Monterey Pop Festival. BBHC certainly sound very amateurish but their joy in the sound they were producing is obvious. Janis , at this point , was very intent after a year's work with this band to have them cross over to a larger audience. This was actually before she started to do the waaaah' wail and raspy voice delivery. She definitely had a clear sound at this point. The voice she developed later required extreme amplification to support it as it was a pure head voice. Hearing their innocence in their interview is also very interesting and endearing.

@@stevenrevins4663 BB&tHC was not then (never was) the most polished musical entity. Other musicians, quite clearly, had either more technical prowess, better "musicianship," or both. That said, and granted the production level (low) of many recorded performances from the late '60s, one cannot deny that some of JJ's most iconic recordings were done with that band. Her untimely death left many unanswered (unanswerable) questions . . . However, the answer to how great a performer she was is right there in the discography ... just take a listen.

Anybody who wants this on DVD can get it as the bonus feature on Revolution 68. That documentary features Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe And The Fish, The Steve Miller Band and Mother Earth. The KQED special was called Come Up The Years : Big Brother And The Holding Company and it's part 2 of this DVD. It was broadcast in April 1967. Come Up The Years was a song by Jefferson Airplane on their first album. Ball And Chain is still her signature song as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for uploading this.

My mother worked at KQED and was involved in producing Come Up the Years. She helped Laura Weber get her show produced at KQED. Laura loved Jorma and Jack and had them as guest on her show in 1969. Jorma, like so many others, adored Janis.

Janis of course was a force of Nature but I never enjoyed her music as much later on. I loved the band Big Brother & the Holding Company including their great singer, Janis! The other guys were awesome and deserve more historical recognition. Maybe they weren't super technically advanced on their instruments but they created original psychedelic rock music that was raw, real, experimental, gritty and great!

Big Brother and the Holding Company in early 1967. Janis has her Ball and Chain down pretty good. She usually wore granny glasses at this time. Saw them a lot free in the Park. The group was OK, but by this time, everybody wanted more Janis. The first time you saw her, you knew she was very special. As long as she stayed in San Francisco, you knew she was safe.

Reminds me of the Avalon in the Fall of 1966 when the Holding Co. were the defecto house band. Everything was so new and exciting and the people were as exciting as the bands on stage. Magical newness in SF. I could Groundhog Day forever from '66 to '69. No kidding.

Janis's facial expression was very indicative of her mood. When Janis felt a sense of anguish, her eyebrows were immediately seen with the inner corners raised. Here, in the final part of the video, when she greets her mother, after the greeting, we see her face becomes sad. What a tenderness!

I saw them in 1968 Alexandria Roller Rink great show. Janis had a bottle of liquor on stage. It was an amazing concert. I still have all my vinyl albums and 45’s.

There's just the barest of hints of the vast growth in their sound and playing quality quantum leap about to take place in about one year. Yes, this is '67 because I saw them in '68 at Newport and by then they'd made the leap and it was mind blowing. I'd been to lots of good concerts but I'd never heard anything yet as powerful as Big Brother when they debuted Cheap Thrills. Just Wow!

They were seriously ELECTRIC musicians. I often read that the band was considered "sloppy," but the more you listen and watch them play live, especially in a close setting like this, I suspect "sloppiness" is better translated as "a consistent element of sonic unpredictability." Janis shared that as well, albeit vocally. They never seemed like a band performing by rote. Very acid, very wild, very alive. Too real for most people, probably. I wish I could have seen them! Thanks for posting; still such an inspiration for musicians today, who covet playing a set that tight and still have the audience wondering if you're winging it!

Big brother were a good band Janis is awesome talking of sloppiness i have been listen to The Velvet Underground & Nico quite a bit some of that is sloppy but I cant get enough of it. The West coast bands were better than East coast bands in the 60s by far imo The Doors, Byrds, Love, Big Brother, jefferson airplane and canned heat etc etc but what a time for music ✌

I'll take BB&HC any day. I really enjoy their laid back way of playing, having fun and not taking it all that serious, but playing good. Great stuff. I like Janis best when she was with these boys. They had good attitudes and I think they were really good for her. Family.

I don't know that Big Brother and the Holding Company ever did anything less than a stellar performance. The period of 1966-1967 in San Francisco had great bands, and BBHC was one of the best, even though short lived. If anyone has other film of a live performance PUT IT UP! I was at the Fillmore on February 19, 1967 in San Francisco, California when Big Brother and the Holding Company shared the night with Jefferson Airplane, a great group. Grace Slick, Marty Balin, Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Paul Kantner put on a fabulous show, but Big Brother and the Holding Company blew them away: it was like a firecracker compared to an M80. Standing right at the foot of the stage was a great place for me to experience both groups, and when Janis exploded with that voice, and James Gurley and Sam Andrew played notes that didn't exist anywhere else, what a phenomenon! That there is footage of Big Brother and the Holding Company is great for music history. That a new generation is hearing this group and liking them is great! Get your hands on the early LPs if you can.

I like how Janis turns towards the band, digging what they're doing. Big Brother gets a bad rap but I thought they were perfect -- and very creative. When I saw Janis in London in 69 with a new bunch, it was exciting but not like this.

I was only thirteen years old and lived far away, but was crushed when I heard Janis was leaving Big Brother. Neither of her next two bands ever sounded as good or had the raw energy of the Holding Company.

Though Big Brother sounds rough in this video, they went on to get to a high level of musicality while maintaining this very distinct San Francisco sound. If you werent there youll probably never know it. You've got to hear them playing the Avalon Ball Room, and bouncing that big buzz monster off the ceiling. Nothing like it. Very cool to have this video of them at this stage!

Da,chitarele cu distors (distorsionate) împreună cu timbrul vocii catifelat și căldură inefabilă brav-oooo lor, Doamnei șarmantă respectiv Janis Joplin,o femeie sublimă și plină de candoare,a emoționat până la epuizarea și extaz publicul larg din America și Europa, Versurile sale explozive extravagante expansive excitante, poziții de top din Billboard USA Melody mekar Musical Expres UK London,D-zeu sa o odihnească în pace și liniște,,.S-a catapultat pe orbită!!!

Thank you for this. I loved his solo on SUMMERTIME with Janis. Andrew lived in northern California with his wife Elise Piliwale. He had one daughter, Mari Andrew, from his marriage to Suzanne Thorson. He died in San Francisco, California on February 12, 2015, following complications from open-heart surgery due to a heart attack suffered ten weeks prior.

I really like the songs where Janis sang, but I do wish I'd heard more BBHC, whether with or without her. I find them to be a lot of fun to listen to. And I especially like the songs where Janis isn't the only singer. I loved Combination of the 2, but the album version only had Janis's vocals, and I didn't even realize there were lyrics until I heard the Monterey Pops version ...

Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl. My first concert---My parents had to drive us LOL! All Janis had to do was Ball and Chain and be a legend, in my mind. Here she already has it all down in '67. At the Bowl, they were second billing to Iron Butterfly. Fraternity of Man opened! Thank you Janis! Wish you could stay with us. As we found out on the Train: Tomorrow never comes. It's all one day.
