It's time to do some creative destruction, bulldozing to connect two isolated and underserved neighborhoods in Port Concord. I also break down what's going on with traffic, what I like and don't like about different design decisions we've all made, and what I'd like to change.
This is a Cities Skylines series bringing together multiple creators to build on a single map in an attempt to build one city together. #5B1C #5Builders1City #CitiesSkylines

5B1C is really fascinating to watch, especially this episode. Cities are of course not designed in real life by one person - they evolve and develop and grow and new planners need to make big decisions on existing infrastructure. To watch this city evolve and different builders address problems created by new developments and an evolving city is really interesting! And very entertaining too of course!

Booooooooooo i find Lee and some others to be very boring mainly because they don't play the game they go for this unreasonable realistic feel which is unfeasible in the game. Aka lee doesn't play the game he plays "god" his game play is boxing asf. Imperatur and biffa play a game IT IS NOT A CITY SIMULATOR IT IS A GAME!!!! TOO MUCH REALISM IS NOT GOOD

I like the slow and considered approach here, twenty minutes of planning before you even start building anything. Really curious to see what this will eventually do for traffic. In case anyone's interested, here's some history for this city: 20-05-2021 - Start of the city, Czardus takes office as mayor, stays on for 3 years and 2 months. Builds a nice fishing town. 14-08-2024 - City Planner Plays takes office, for 4 years, 4 months. Builds a farm and cozy new neighbourhood. 23-12-2028 - Lee Hawkins takes office, for 7 years, 11 months. Fixes traffic and builds a hillside campus. 11-12-2036 - Overcharged Egg takes office, for 4 years. 2 months. Builds a waterfront and fancy tiered neighbourhood. 12-02-2041 - ImperialJedi takes office, for 3 years, 10 months. Builds a pretty interchange and expands the city into the forested hills. 22-12-2044 - Czardus returns to office, for 1 year, 10 months. Fills in open spaces and adds a forestry industry. 19-10-2046 - City Planner Plays returns to office, for 3 years and 5 months. Builds bike paths while the city burns, then redevelops downtown. 05-03-2050 - Lee Hawkins returns to office, for 10 years and 10 months. Earns the title of Lord Interchange and Master of Traffic, expands the city's industry. 01-05-2051 - TheTimeister comes in meanwhile as park planning consultant, for 5 years and 2 months. Develops a coastal nature reserve for the city. 21-01-2061 - Overcharged Egg returns to office, for 8 years and 6 months. Carves out a massive ore mine next to a small town nestled in the forest. 23-07-2069 - ImperialJedi returns to office, for 2 years and 5 months. Builds a mall and surrounding beachside neighbourhood, expands the city's industry. 27-12-2071 - Biffa comes in as traffic advisor/mayor, for 3 years and 3 months. Fixes traffic flow throughout the city to be better than it ever was. 25-03-2074 - Czardus returns to office, for 3 years and 6 months. Adds sprawling hillside suburbs and oil industry. 07-10-2077 - City Planner Plays returns to office, for 3 year and 8 months. Expands the city's downtown and improves connectivity and city services. 23-06-2081 - Imperator comes in, for 8 years, to develop an international airport across the river. 03-06-2083 - Lee Hawkins returns to office, for 1 year and 3 months so far, as of the end of this video. Redevelops Pine and Dale Hill and attempts to improve traffic. Give or take a few weeks here and there where power changed hands etc. (i.e. I can't be bothered calculating the days as well)

Huge fan of Biffa as he got me into watching more KZfaqrs of the game. But what I love about this game is that you can take two completely different ways of doing something and have then both work. Most games have a one size fits all fix and this game seems to have multiple fixes for just about everything. If you like timed traffic lights, there is a way to set up your city to work well with them. Like lane mathematics? There is a way to set up your city to accommodate. Just glad we have so many skilled players doing cool things in the game.

Spiffing Brit would kill all the speed limits on those shortcuts (re: the Red Bull challenge if anyone doesn't get the reference) :D Biffa said at the time the TTL quick setup could be reverted to co-ordinated later by another builder who knew how to. The changes meant the timings didn't reflect the usage so he had to reset them to work at all.

To fix some of the Concordia boulevard interchange at 13:30 you definitely should add a ramp where that little built up area is. I think there used to be a solar tower there and since everyone is turning left on the current ramp you definitely should add a ramp so they can just go right.

13:50 I don't know what solution he gives eventually but this is such an easy fix. Build another off ramp from the highway onto the boulevard (demolish the buildings or use the existing piece of dead end road). The existing one will be right turn only, no traffic lights with a short lane to merge onto the boulevard, the new one right turn only (but from the other side) no traffic lights, + lane to get onto the boulevard. Zero traffic jams. Simply don't allow cars to cross the road, only merge onto it from the sides..

This is so cool to watch! That tramstop underneath the bridge is always overcrowded and that's bugging me from the moment it was installed. It seems like none of the builders have noticed it yet. But the sims down there are going back on to the bridge, take their cars out of their pockets and cause a lot of the traffic on there. I'm hoping this will be resolved.. But since I'm watching it way behind on scedule, I'll find out soon ♥ It nice to see you'll be in the next two episodes as well, because this was amazing!

Lee, I love your courage in this episode. In many ways this is more realistic to real development because everyone is having to work with and around other peoples work and not everyone is fully aware of the others plans. It's making for such an interesting series and makes the process even more engaging. I'm loving all of the creators on this series as I only knew a handful of you all before starting it. Finally, i always loved the insight you gave in between your build! Most city skylines builder are somehow only great on just either one of city planning knowledge or game mechanics knowledge (they’re great though! Dont get me wrong). But you always managed to strike balance between the two. You have slight dissadvantage compared other builders due to irregular upload schedule. But i believe your subscriber will always understand that, given the quality of the content. Thanks for your quality content today, lee! Ps: Seems like your rig is barely able to catch up with the amount of content of this city demanded, perhaps you’d might want to consider for some upgrades on your pc.

Part of the problem with the timed traffic lights you used to have on Main St (and this cropped up at the Concord Blvd interchange) is that when the roads/intersections were changed (more lanes or dedicated turn lanes), the ought cycles didn't change with the lanes. They had to be competely re set up.

@WandererRTF

I think i might try to do that a bit differently. In a sense by going more strictly along the road hierarchy concept - so by cutting down the minor intersections along the main road where the timed traffic lights are going, just to make sure the big road is actually able to act as higher grade road. Problem is that the (rather tight) grid in use doesn't really make that easy and would require quite a bit of work (and causing changes in zoning) which would disrupt the city quite badly. EDIT: Commented a bit too early.. so pretty much by doing roughly the same you are later on...

Always interested to hear your thoughts. 27 minutes of talking before doing _any_ changes was a test, I'll admit. I think maybe it would have been easier to follow along if you did the short version of the big picture first, then explained details while fixing them along the way.

Wow ... what a cliffhanger! But I'm sure it will be beautiful. I'm just wondering how the setup of tram lines will actually look in the end and whether the existing metro station in Pine Hill will be moved or another one will be added to create a transfer option. "Addition by subtraction" - it makes sense but I would have preferred improved routes to alternative highway connections ... an attempt that might be futile. And I am truly impressed how well you derive your decision with your excessive and smart use of the traffic route tool.

If the fixes work, they work. Timed traffic lights do not always work. In fact, I’ve found, they often make things worse.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
It's true...but I have found different strategies that make timed traffic lights much easier to pull off. I touch on some of this in the next episode. The biggest problem I've had in this city isn't so much with the traffic lights, but the land uses that overwhelm them. If you've seen More Money Less Traffic Series 2 Part 6, you can get a better idea of what I mean. It's really hard to have just ONE big interchange handling all this industrial and delivery traffic, as well as the garbage trucks. At the same time, it's not like there's enough room to add another interchange to scale back on the onslaught of traffic. So we're left with fixing the bottlenecks, then loading things back up to capacity again. Timed traffic lights IMO will handle things better than roundabouts at max capacity, but they still won't be able to do the job. At max capacity the problem is not the traffic controls or the intersections, it's the land uses causing the traffic. What really needs to happen is better land use planning with the transportation infrastructure in mind.

I do really like this series (and the previous one) so I hope you are all going for a third, fourth, fifth etc etc. What I really love in this town is that coal mine, which I simply adore how it is dug down, something I have personally tried and failed at a few times to do in my own cities :D So keep up the work all of you And yeah we don't all agree with what every of the builders do in this series, but I am sure all of you and most of us who view can give/take critic on it, specially if it is followed up by arguments on why, so that we all an learn or contemplate it and dismiss it :D So I hope that many others like me, watch these for the inspiration on how to do things and learn from the mistakes all of you make, and we can sit and snicker at saying to ourself "Nahh I would never have done it like that" ;)

Meta comment about the whole series (and the comments on it): I find it super fascinating in people comparing the builders on this season into what amounts to two camps, the planning/engineering camp (Lee and CPP) and the artistic/detailing camp (Czardus, Overcharged, probably Jedi too). I find myself when I play moreso in the former, in Cities Skylines, but games in general. Most of my good friends are in the latter which makes for some great overall projects as we move whatever game we're playing back and forth to come to the most mutually agreeable solution. But I hadn't really looked at it that way until I was reading the comments and really noting how so many are connecting with some of the builders more than others -- and why. The diversity between builders I think it what makes the city so fascinating, even if we all have different preferences in which style we prefer to do (or watch).

As a game, even in a 30 min challenge anyone with more than a few hours in the game can turn a profit. So what is the 'challenge'? Realism. 2) You don't need to add a lil dirt stub road anymore, network controller lets you add a node wherever you want. Evolve, adapt etc :-p Remove node is also so useful. Damn I love that mod. Now USE ALL OF IT LEE!

So, after following each build of this series, a recommendation. The reason your early interchange creates such traffic problems is as follows. The interchange only has left turns. Every turn is a left. Except for the direction with the least traffic (towards downtown). Now, this might not be an issue if it were one of several possible on-ramps to the only connection in/out of the city for the area. But that interchange is functionally the only in/out. This means literally all your traffic is continuously making left turns/straight through. What you need first is a right-handed turns for entry/exit from the expressway. That roundabout can handle a giant traffic volume. Having 3 lights to handle left-turns rather than yielding right exits means your lights, rather than the roundabout, handle the entire traffic flow. So, instead of disconnecting the mining town, you could solve most of the issue by introducing additional exit/on ramps that force right-turns. Second, the city is solely connected to the express. Everything goes through it. And everything is forced down more local connectors to get to areas outside the main highway. So, you could also help really alleviate the problems by creating bypasses. Yes, they take up some space to create the bypass interchange. But a highspeed bypass going over the road, for example, will dramatically alleviate the congestion on the local connectors. Heck, taking a bypass through downtown even isn't a bad idea (and it being that the skyscrapers take up most of the view, would be almost unnoticed. Third, and perhaps most importantly--there are only like 3 exits/entrances for the main population centers onto the expressway. Those three are: main, the problem interchange, and the farming interchange. These 3 handle the majority of all traffic. You really need small service interchanges to connect the disparate and often distant pieces of the city to the expressway. A few small interchanges to handle local traffic will alleviate traffic on the larger interchanges that are handling mostly non-local traffic. Finally, there is very little interconnectivity between areas. You are working on that sort of here--but indirectly. Having just small connections for local traffic could help a ton and improve many other aspects. And some of that includes that almost every regional connection includes an interchange. Interchanges kept separate from local connections largely run more smoothly and get less congested. Areas should have a good balance of both. I'd note--I'd really consider putting in a bypass expressway as the city will likely need one going forward, seeing all the sprawl. Something going from the mining city down past the port along downtown and hooking into the other expressway (perhaps continuing towards the Barlow District). The fact that there are no bypasses for basically anything is, imo, the biggest factor hurting traffic--all traffic gets forced down the same routes. (Well, technically there is one bypass: the tram route towards the university, but it's not really a bypass in the traditional sense since it's stopping to pick up local traffic but w/e). Take it as you wish. But, considering the alternative is large-scale demolition, it seems that simple things like these may be the better way to go. Heck, even Biffa's roundabout was highly effective. Just, people kept changing roads to divert traffic back towards saturated traffic lights and saturated roadways.

Thanks for your thoughts! Here are some of my thoughts in response: I think that the highways, particularly the Crossbay Highway, are serious overkill for this city. I don’t like that the vanilla game (and in turn most custom maps) start you out with highways, because this is not how 99.9% of cities started out-maybe the suburbs did, but not the central city. I feel like Port Concord was built around the highway probably too much, and the highways have contributed to our traffic problems quite a bit by cutting off huge areas of the city. The railroad did this some too. Had I been the one laying out the core neighborhoods, I’d like to think I’d have made more connections across the highway. But this sort of thing happens in real life-only a few roads are built to connect things up and then huge amounts of development turn it into a traffic quagmire. The terrain really hurts us here too. I think your point about the bypass holds some validity, but I don’t know that it would really solve everything. I sincerely believe that this city has plenty of highway access, and that it doesn’t need more. I think the interchanges could be improved, but I don’t think we need that many service interchanges, I think we need better interconnection across the highways to reach isolated areas better. I think another issue here is conflicting highway philosophies-I am a firm believer that highways are for long-distance travel, and should not be relied on for connecting to the adjacent neighborhood. This means far fewer interchanges, more connections across highways, and more careful land use planning to avoid overwhelming the service interchanges. But if the other builders follow a more liberal service interchanges philosophy, well...things turn out looking like this...a typical small American city lol. I’ve found the results of this series very interesting because it really does exemplify that induced demand happens! There are ways to prevent it, but without central land use and transportation planning, it doesn’t take much to thwart the preventions. I’ll conclude by also admitting I have a pretty high tolerance for traffic congestion. I began ignoring the traffic flow percentage a long time ago 😂 and I know most players live by it. I just try to keep traffic moving overall, and lately I’ve begun to stop thinking so much in terms of getting motor traffic through and I’ve started looking for ways of minimizing it and optimizing walking, bicycling, and transit. But that’s hard when the next guy sees a spot for heavy industry and drops just enough in to overwhelm the intersection you just rebuilt to handle the current capacity. Maybe that’s my biggest downfall...is not thinking far enough ahead to optimize better for _future_ needs. Idk... 🤷🏻‍♂️ it’s a fun game, and it’s fun to muse over these things and look at things from different perspectives. So I sure appreciate comments like yours where you analyze the problems and make your case. I think I agree that the stroad thing with Concord Blvd was ideal. I think your bypass idea is valid, though I would certainly not make it a highway. I think something like the Bayfront Hwy in Erie, PA (the old part between I-79 and East Ave) would definitely have helped. I have some other ideas for the Concord-Crossbay Interchange...not sure if I’ll implement it though. I’m just out of time 😞

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto First of all--thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It's been a joy watching everything so far. That's exactly the bypass i had in mind too. I agree at current a highway is not needed. Just, it will mean potentially in the future ripping up small local roads and cutting neighborhoods in half. I don't think it's so much that you (or other builders) don't worry about future proofing. Rather, as happens in real life, builders are largely not considering the effect of induced demand. And unless you want to cut off major portions of the city from each other, that means needing either (1 more access points to diffuse traffic across different roads or (2 needing higher traffic flow on those congested roads. The best future proof, as evidenced by real American cities is this: create interchanges/intersections that can handle far more traffic than currently needed. Mind, not roads--interchanges. A four-lane road is enough to handle almost any traffic you create, if the major interchanges/intersections are designed to handle the traffic flow they receive. But I personally don't think you have the space without major restructuring for it. For example, the problem intersection could be fairly easily fixed I think: turned that series of lights into essentially a large roundabout. Now, it will have its own problems, but it should temporarily fix the issues currently observed. It should more than handle the flow for at least up to double (maybe triple or quadruple) the current Port Concord population. The second best future proof is by redirecting traffic across more access points (alternate routes). But it doesn't fix the problem, it moves it. Personally, I don't mind the starting with highways, or highway dependence. While many cities didn't start that way, they do develop that way. The unrealistic part is that the highway network here isn't built overtop of a preexisting network--you have few underpasses, parallel rods, roads beneath the highway in line with the grid, etc. Anyways, I personally have enjoyed yours (and others) works. Just my thoughts from doing my own megacities. I'm enjoying watching all your stuff so far.

@@donalddickerson206 I understand the usefulness of roundabouts, and I think they’re great for medium traffic situations, but I am really doubtful that it would work very well with the huge amount of long trucks and the heavy traffic we have at Concord/Crossbay because roundabouts really get bogged down with constant traffic coming from any one direction. I think it’s possible they could help here, but I think that if more traffic popped up from further development that it would just get bogged down so bad that traffic lights would have to happen anyway. My biggest issue with that area is just that there’s too many high-traffic uses all crammed into that area, and every time it gets fixed (whether it’s me or Biffa) more stuff just gets built in there.

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yeah, that extra neighborhood addition off the interchange really damaged traffic--especially after Biffa had removed it with free flow. Roundabout efficacy will vary. Right now you just need something higher flow. You have a buildup of cars, but my slowspeed estimates it looks like it's really only maybe an extra 8 cars per cycle that's causing the backup. Hard to tell whether it's the whole length of backup or just the 8 that it needs to be increased by. I only said roundabout (it'd really be more of an oval) as it's the easiest, most immediate, least space consuming, and least damaging to the rest of the network. A "quick fix" if you will to what I estimate will become a continually bigger issue. That's, if you will, the aorta of the city. Well, that and the main interchange. What would you prefer for such high traffic situations?

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto in today's episode you moved a lot on the bridge that leads from downtown to college, I think it's the first bridge you built. My suggestion is: do away with traffic lights on both sides. now that there is already the possibility of making exits and entries of the access loops that make it possible to not have conversions that cross the lane, as there are 4 loops. The problem is that only one, the one on the left of those looking from the college to the center, is one way or another, the others have only one direction, exiting or entering the highway. If all were the same as this one, there would be the possibility that no one would have to cross the lane to access the highway or to access the city, thus eliminating traffic lights. The only more complicated one is the one you built today, because as you built the entrance to the highway close to the lane and next to another exit, you would have to place it a little further forward to avoid traffic jams, and thus it would be possible to make it entrance and exit . The angle would have to be almost a semi-circle for this. I wish I could send you the drawing but I can't do it around here. haha
