Finally a KTM redesign! The 2023 300XC and SX just dropped and I’m so glad to see that they are ditching the TPI for the throttle body TBI design. However I’m not excited about the electronic power valve and lack of manual adjustability there. With the new frame, swing arm and shorter rear shock they dropped 2.65 lbs compared to last years TPI XC but they did introduce the dreaded plastic subframe! Also KTM dropped a gear and went to a 5 speed gear box for some reason? We won’t be seeing any of these big updates for the XCW model until 2024 unfortunately. What do you think of the new bike, will you switch to an XC this year to try out the new TBI?

Will be keeping my 2018 300sx till I get to 1000hrs or I can't find parts (currently at 290). Carbed, balanced motor, 300sx kit, Kreft suspension, kickstarter, XC 6 speed ratio, A60 wheels, upgraded brakes - and I paid 8200 cash out the door new in 2018 - how things have changed! I wouldn't trade my bike for a new one - really. If someone stole my bike tomorrow - I would just build another 300sx off a 250xc non tpi 2018 bike. Hopefully the TBI bikes have more grunt than the TPI bikes. Rest in Peace TPI. Thanks for the video.

5 speed was a huge mistake and deal breaker on this bike. TBI will be on 2024 bikes if KTM follows the way they roll down technology. I'd wait until 2024 for the XC-W.

@@TrailBoundco I understand what you mean. I think its lacking in the hit department as well. There's a kicker though. The more linear the power, the easier it is to find traction. So really i think the lack of hit helps me track up slick rocks wayyy better. I went from a 19 tx300 (carb), to my 22 TE. I was immediately noticeably better in the creeks. Im from the North Ga mountains, and the rocks around here are slick as glass.

It’s not that the TPI (Transfer Port Injection) was/is bad...it works great and most every rider likes it...the change to TBI (Throttle Body Injection) was basically “forced upon” KTM due to the newest EURO 6 emissions regulations. Apparently, the TPI system was fine under the EURO 4 & 5 regulations, but the system released a bit more carbon/fuel from the exhaust port under the newer EURO 6 limits. KTM R&D in Austria knew this was coming and (to my understanding) began early design and prototype in order to meet the new standards and not affect production and sales in the EU.

Really like the new tool free shock adjustments, TBI, and electronic power valve. With all of the aftermarket ECU options I'm sure there will be awesome tuning capabilities for the PV. If I were buying this bike for its primary purpose, XC racing, I wouldn't mind the 5 speed gearbox, plastic (or is it composite?) subframe, or air fork. But since I'm mostly a trail rider, I would personally wait for next year's XC-W. I'm a PDS fanboy and would prefer the XPLOR fork.

Love the channel - Carb guys with 2019 models talk about they have the last reliable bike. My TPI's have been amazing with no issues. My 2019 300 TPI has a kick starter - I've never used it. With 160 hours, not one problem - my carb bikes sit, I hate messing with jets, needles and mixing gas. To each his own, the TPI bikes are friggen amazingly reliable and run beautiful. . The TBI bikes might just be about cleaner emissions, not anything else. Keep the TPI and power valve adjustment.

2022 300 xcw. Melted down with less than 6 minutes on it. KTM couldn’t find anything wrong. KTM rebuilt it and reflashed the ecu. It lasted 20 hours before it melted down the 2nd time. KTM had trouble finding parts to rebuild it…which says a lot. It was sold and a carbed bike bought after that.

My 2022 300 XC TPI never ran properly from day 1. Within 7 hours it seized 2 times. Presently KTM is having the dealer install a new motor (not sure what that includes) plus a new oil injection pump. I should be getting it back this week. I hope. The 1st seizure KTM only replaced the pistion, cylinder and crankcase. But no part(s) that could have been the fault!! After the 1st seizure it seized the 2nd time within 0.2 hours !!! No one knows why it runs poorly nor why it seizes. It is 100% stock.

My 2020 Husqvarna TE TPI was pretty good, but NOTHING beats my TM Racing EN300ES 2t (carb platform). This bike is the best bike ever owned besides my new 22 Honda 450! Love them both for their own applications...I'd love the 22 TM Racing carb model, but perfectly happy having a model a couple years old as it is still a way better bike than I am rider. :) Very exciting to see KTM always pushing into something new, just noticed my Husqvarna bike was a little finicky, when my TM Racing and Honda (and Yamaha before that) were all DIALED from the showroom floor. Not a bad bike though, and it was very fun...just as a bigger dude these aluminum frames feel better to me! Also I believe KTM overcharges for things that break more easily than these other machines...just have to many first hand accounts of my friend's machines breaking, and even my TPI would fry spark plugs like no tomorrow...and it's a myth about parts availability for TM's - I feel at the present moment it may be one of the better manufacturers to get parts from!

Excellent video. Thanx. Footpeg inward = closer to the left / right, of the centre line of the bike. So they are narrower overall from each other. TBI = Throttle Body Injection. I hope it is still really a 6 speed. Looks like the left lower rad hose no longer rubs on the power valve area. No coolant temperature sensor in the cylinder head anymore! Must use that one in the rad hose you mentioned it now has. My 2022 KTM XC TPI seized 2 times in 7 hours. KTM is putting a brand new motor and oil pump in it now this week. The 1st time they only replaced the piston, cylinder and crankshaft. It then ran for 0.2 hours and seized again.

So I just bought a 2022 TM 300FI this comes with the TBI injection system and electronic power valve. Love the bike, but the power valve does do some kind of cycle everytime it stalls so it sputters for the first 5 seconds after starting it from a stall out. The power delivery is unbelievable its like you are always in the power band you never have to wind it out to get into the beans of the power. Just my 2 cents

I think the subframe is aluminum on top too, it's just encased in plastic. The 2 aluminum sections (upper and lower) don't appear to be welded together though, it looks like it's just plastic at the rear holding it all together. probably not as bad as current husky design, but i think we'd all just prefer aluminum regardless of any weight penalty. They're claiming better flex too, and maybe that is a factor in MX/SX but it's certainly not in 1st gear creekbeds lol.

So the plastic sub frame is a fail. I want linkage, steel sub frame and coil forks for my application. Lets hope the 23 Gas Gas ec 300has those three things, but we may have to wait another year for the upgrade. My 21 Gas Gas ec 300 has brilliant shrouds, rounded and tucked in so they don't catch in enduro conditions. I've had 2 TPi bikes (the first a 2018 KTM XCW 300), loved them both and never a days trouble once you put in an idle screw. I cured the thin bottom end power with mapping and a FMF Gnarly header and just learned to ride it differently. I have never had to kick start either TPi bike ever and battery hasn't ever failed. I've done 100's of hours on both bikes in extreme enduro conditions. Thee 5 speed reference has to be a typo, or maybe its just the XC? XCW must have a 6 speed tranny.

That thing pulls hills like nobody's business. I can barely hang on to it at wot. Running premix just seems like a step backwards to me. And the weight savings is a whole pint. As far as the map switch goes, if you hold down both buttons at the same time, I believe you get traction control. So I think it's worth it just for that if nothing else.

I did move the injectors with an Athena kit and all is well with that, improved response time and eliminating fear of cold start seizures. I also ride with 2 other guys most of the time and they ride (alas) 4 stroke bikes so not having to bring pre-mix on a ride is a plus to me, and them having the extra fuel. Totally satisfied with the pump and the injector move, knock on wood. Thanks for the update info.

Interesting, so they (KTM AG) will be using the American market to test their TBI via the XC as the EXC would need to have oil injection to comply with Euro 5 and won't be released until 2024...might get a 2022 TM 300i rather than wait 2 years

My opinion on 5 speeds is that I'd be ok with it, as long as it's a wide ratio 5 speed. My YZ250 with WR gears is very nice, it has a nice low first and a great travel speed with one less shift to make. Preferable to a close ratio 6 speed for me. If it's a close ratio 5 speed it'll be a disappointment.

I'll be waiting for the W to get the tbi as im not a fan of dragging rusted up linkage over rocks and logs. I'm bummed about no more option for kick start. The electronic power valve has the potential to make good power but we won't know how the computer will run it till we ride one. The lack of a oil pump is just plain good news for reliability and so I can continue to refill my saw from the tank full of mix.

Waiting for the 23 300xcw. Think the performance will be good. Really not excited about that plastic rad cap or the fuel tank design. It pulls fuel from the center of the tank & that’s not the lowest point. Not sure tipping the tank will get all the fuel either like you could do on the 21. Not excited about the electronic powevalve. Seems like an unnecessary complication. Learned to live without the kick lever on the 21 so will see. Overall excited for the xcw to come though.

XC have 6 speed in 2023 so maybe its the same as the xcw. I have a TE300 with the plastic sub frame and no complaints. Looped many times busted many back fenders and I am pushing 260 lbs+ with all my gear and 3l camelpack/tools. No issues with the subframe. Its not really plastic but some composite material.

I have a 2019 TM EN250 with an electronic power valve and it works really well. If KTM uses the same approach, I suspect it will be just as good. The 5 speed transmission has me questioning making the move to a KTM this year. If it's a pure motor-crosser transmission, that'll be a deal breaker for me. Everything else either looks good, or I can deal with on this new design.

What do you like about the electronic power valave ?
@erniepearce3562
@erniepearce3562 2 жыл бұрын
@@TrailBoundco With the TM, there's a gear position sensor that gives feedback to the ECU that allows the ECU to modulate the power valve differently for each gear through the rpm range - not just using engine rpms. The difference that I have noticed between this electronic power valve vs a standard mechanical is the power delivery is very smooth, yet never lacking - always optimum torque. Further more, if you find for some reason the delivery is too aggressive for the terrain you're riding, the map switch will not only change the engine timing, it will change how the power valve modulates as well. In other words, the map switch is somewhat comparable to putting your bike in rain mode and softening the power valve set point at the same time. I suspect this will be similar on the KTM's now, which is why we are now seeing a map switch supplied as standard. I haven't see anything about a gear position sensor though on the new KTM designs. Curious to know if that will be their approach as well. Now we have a 6 speed transmission, I might be on board with a new 300XC.

I like to see the new tech each year of new bikes. But sadly have to pass on the tech when I see the ticket price... Maybe when I hit the millionaire status... I'm happy riding my early 2000's bikes though, it allows me to have some extra $$$ to afford todays new fuel prices to get to the trail to ride. The no kick start an thinner cases tell me this bike is a no go when I hit the lottery... Also one should never buy the first year of something. Wait till they get the bugs worked out and buy the following year. Don't be an unpaid guinea pig :(. If one never rides these new bikes, they don't know what they're missing, and can stay happy riding their ancient steed... :)

The deal breaker is if the EXC spring forks are Explor single sided rebound/compress garbage like the last few years. Why would you buy a new bike and then have to spend $1500 on fixing the forks. TBI will be interesting to see if it can match a 36mm Keihin Carb for bottom end snap. Removing the oil injection is probably a good idea, but they could have optioned it maybe. Kickstart - dont care - Electric is more reliable anyway.

I'm going to give you a little shit about the foot peg comment. Move them in means, the frame is narrower than the older models where the foot pegs attach so the bike is skinny and goes through tight sections without getting hung up. Move them in doesn't mean up or forward. LOL. Plastic subframes and winter riding don't mix. Ride safe my 2 wheel friends.

In my humble opinion, the 2016 KTMs were the pinacle of EXCs. Everything after 2016 seems to get more complicated, less reliable, and lower quality. The 2016 250 EXC 2 stroke is still my dream bike.......no brand new KTMs in my future

My 2016 300xcw was also my favorite bike from the carb era. Everything was just so sorted and bullet proof. My 21 Gas Gas EC 300 has become my favorite bike ever, just because it feels a bit more playful but is still able to handle extreme enduro conditions. I know it makes no sense because its really just a KTM/Husky parts bin special. But it just feels different in frame and motor somehow.

41.7 hours on my 2020 erzberg 300xcw and the oil pump stopped working smoked my cylinder/piston/rings and the fix was a new wiring harness, the dealer couldn’t find anything wrong in mine as in broken wires or cuts, etc.etc. But a brand new one and it’s working again and it wasn’t the pump my pump with 41.7hrs on it works just fine on my friends bike and I purchased a brand new pump and it still didn’t work. As much as I love this bike for the price tag they make us pay flukes like this should happen and not be covered. The dealer that fixed my bike was working with KTM directly to fix it as they were not sure on what it was and KTM is who eventually said “ just get a complete new harness and try that” WTF? If that’s the answer then it should be covered IMO now I’m out a couple grand because shit happened I guess 🤦🏼‍♂️
