BIG CHIEF -vs- 900+ci CUDA - Testing for NHRA Indy

After receiving some updates at Larry Jeffers Race Cars, Big Chief brought the Crowmod out for some testing in NHRA legal trim during the PSCA Street Car Super Nationals St. Louis Event. 'NHRA Legal' usually means more weight, less turbo and way less rear end gear to run quarter mile. Wishing the whole Midwest Street Cars Crew the best as they head to Indy for the US Nationals where they will be swimming with the sharks in the Pro Modified class.

Typically nitrous care run 900+ ci but turbocharged cars usually aren't bigger than 632ci

You can't run 1/4's on the street. Its too dangerous. If you're slow, its fine. But when you're pulling 230+mph in the 1/4 you can't take that anywhere but the track. Slow cars, running 10's or worse, are fine.

There are a lot more places to run 1/8th mile and that still allows for lots of testing on what the car does for the first 660 feet. Getting the first half of the run right is a way bigger piece of the puzzle than the last half. 1/8th mile testing is still quite valuable.

I agree...My local track only runs 1/4. I wouldn't even go there anymore if they decided to go 1/8. It was the import crowd that started this, because you can't push those lawn mower engines to far...LOL

The top speed that I've seen for the Crow Mod is 173mph and Murder Nova runs about the same. I just thought that when he wrecked his old car and built his New Crow Mod that it would Blow the other guys away like Daddy Dave and Murder Nova, but that's just not the case. I'd like to see him put a bigger Motor in that thing and get some revenge on Kye Kelly.

That's 100% true, you could have a 3000+ HP car and be outrun by a 1000HP car because you can't put the power to the wheels and hook. That car Chief was racing(forgive me on not knowing the drivers name, just starting to get into NHRA) is a beast of a car, but the power output was just too much and the tires didn't hook. No hook you get a bad launch(Crowmod hooked and left extremely hard and fast)

+Frank Heath No. It is a Butler Racing 482 Pontiac. Big Chief talks about it on several of his shows. you can also go to Butler racing on the internet and look at their website.

+Barclay Benjamin is correct actually, it's a Butler Racing 482 Pontiac. Go watch the Crowmod reveal. I believe it's on both the Midwest Streetcars channel and the 1320 Video channel and this one if I remember correctly.

Jt Blayze thank you for chiming in. The Pontiac has always been an underrated engine. It was designed by the same guys that designed the small block Chevy. In fact it is almost identical. The same things that make the small block Chevy run also makes the Pontiac run. Today you can even order Pontiac Hemi heads for Pontiac tunnel Port heads, from Kauffman racing or ramairv.com.

He has a video on his facebook page saying everything. Different turbos, carbon fiber brakes, floating rear axle, steel floor pans, kevlar under oil pan, more roll cage tubing, etc. Probably $40k+ by the time they are done. All to make it slower.

It would be a good idea to invite the program running back Steve Reeves with his red bolido! I read somewhere that NHRA reached out to him to do a PSA on street racing and later invited him to compete. Don't know how true that is, but he did do a PSA for them and later modified his car to pass tech, so....

yea he signed with the nhra before the filming of season 8 street outlaws. had to spend a bunch of money to get the car to nhra standards and now he wont be street racing anymore since he wrecked the crow, chief has always been an undercover track lover

Radials are faster then slicks.Cheif went 4.03 with a radial tire.But then again,this is testing,if you put more power and get it down the track,then he will go faster.I still think that they don't have a chance to even qualify.

Radials might be faster due to lower rolling resistance, but slicks will be quicker due to the fact you can apply the power much more abruptly- they like to be spun off the line. Radials do not, you have to apply the power much more gradually with a radial tire. So, he should be running much quicker on a slick (time wise, but maybe lower trap speed)

Yes, you can apply the power- but not as abruptly as on a slick from a dig. It's just the way it is, if you haven't raced on both tires yourself, ask someone who has... Radials don't like to be spun off the line, slicks do. Slicks will always be quicker- always... Anyone who says differently just doesn't know what they're talking about. Just a fact... Radials lose grip big time when spun off the line

How can one car have a higher top speed but and still lose the race? I know reaction time is one factor. But i have seen plenty of races here on youtube where there is a big difference between the 2 cars and the loser has a higher top speed and still loses the race. Am is missing something? Also, some videos do not say how long the track is, if it is a 1/8 or 1/4. I have seen cars in different videos have the same top speed but one car is like seconds faster. Guessing one car is doing the 1/8 drag and the other is doing the 1/4. I wish they would specify how long the track is.

if he had jumped the red light would have come on. he was still within the staging lines. you can stage early or deep depending on how you are going to launch. sometimes you time it right and get the jump, other times you red light. he crept up but stayed behind the sensor. so technically he did not jump. its not like the show where if the tires move before some clown turns on a flashlight you jumped. at the track they have the 2 lights as you know. pre stage and staged.
