Hi from 2022! Just found this video and it is the best chorus comparison video I've seen on KZfaq. Good variety and very good explanation of each. I'm looking for a good chorus pedal right now, and I have the opportunity of buying either the Julia or the Mxr stereo chorus for 100 bucks. I like both, but I think I'm going to get the MXR stereo, sounds a little more "solid" as an effect imo. I totally agree with you on that the Julia enhances your tone, but it is a darker chorus effect.

I love the WAZA! you get a kind of flanger sound out of it that I love!! it nails all those classic sounds from the 80s!! Queen, Johnny Marr, Police etc. I use to have the micro chorus but sold it! you find it bugs you over time with its limits!! I also own a classic Guyatone chorus which sounds lovely! BUT sadly it has an annoying miss in the background that stopped me from using it on stage!! now if I was to choose a chorus from this video that I don't own, I would grab one of the MXR pedals, probably the blue one

Great video though I havent had yet the pleasure of using the Julia and MXR Stereo Choruses, though peronally for what I have used, I still have alot of fun every single time I play yhe MXR Analog Chrous! Super easy to control and I love the High/Low frequency controls (if thats what it is referred as) I just find it very natural, full and lush though the Julia appears to share alot of similarities with it! MXR Analog Chorus is also probably one of the most inexpensive aswell!✌🎸

Thanks for taking the time to do this - it's a super helpful video. I thought the CE-2W Waza Craft was the most unique. At times it sounded more like a flanger and at other times like the slow setting of a rotary speaker simulator. Very nice, but not a chorus sound to my ears. And I actually liked the fattening quality of the Stonefish, but I can totally see how it would not be welcome if you want your original tone unchanged. Really enjoyed this video. Thanks!

CE2w has 3 modes. In the CE2 mode it gives classic chorus sounds. In the CE1 mode it has a bit of a flanger edge to it and in the CE1 Vibrato mode, it becomes a rotary pedal.

What a fascinating comparison. I came in pre-biased thinking the old MXR Stereo Chorus would be the winner but quickly ended up loving the Julia and Stonefish. The flattest to me was Mooer but once it was cranked up more it came alive. The MXR Stereo Chorus seemed to have a tinny, flanged area that it rested on in part of the phasing between cycles that I didn't like as much but that could also be that it wasn't in stereo mode. All in all it was very eye opening, thank you!

Great review, especially with the rare coverage of both physical and electrical noise, but what a pity there was no stereo for those pedals, as the subtle complexity and stereo width of some chorus pedals is key to so many classic recordings.

Thanks Mike, nice comparison. You should have given the mooer a little more time. Its not a digital imitation as you said. It is a real analog chorus just like the mxr analog chorus. 9mA current draw. Digital pedals draw anywhere between 100 and 300mA or more. You wrote it off too quickly. Mooer = True bypass, analog, no noise or hiss, doesn't boost-just comes on in a subtle fashion not changing the eq of the guitar, doesnt get brittle so no need for tone controls or fix its, level control allows very usable subtle chorus sounds for pros, least expensive, smallest......It kills them ALL in EVERY category except soft switch. I`m glad somebody still uses their brain. 60 bucks. I`m all over it. One of these days company's will start listening to musicians and just start making ALL their pedals true bypass with soft switches. When the distortion comes on everything changes and magnifies the weaknesses in pedals. I am not a chorus fan because most chorus pedals went digital and change the entire sound of your guitar, usually brittle high end not to mention brittle buffers and boosts that you are stuck with. Awful !!

MXR Micro does have problems but the sound is more flange-like than the others which is cool. the stone Fish does change the sound but I like the mellowing effect when it does. i do use a slower rate than the Boss allows. Would be curious to hear more fiddling with the Julia's "Lag" control. My first pick for sound might be the MXR Stereo but the pedal board issue steers me toward the Julia or MXR Analog. Great video!

Hey, love what you are doing here. I prefer the MXR Stereo Chorus, it is true Stereo. I have the Boss CH1 great chorus. The issue with the Boss when run in stereo, the A channel is "dry" the B channel is the Chorus. Switch noise is an interesting thing to compare. Personally if someone steps on a pedal, the switch click doesn't bother me. Old School studio with an amp and microphone, makes a difference then. We do everything direct wire in now.

What a difficult decision, in the end I choose the MXR Stereo Chorus. I like the darker sound better, I like the new chorus sounds but I don't feel like I will use them too much, they are too watery and bright, plus the stereo function and its EQ function for the wet signal with the bass filter for the chorus , I think it is a very useful chorus, at least for me. Thank you very much for the video, it helped me a lot in making this decision.

Great comparison, your clean ambient playing is also vary similar to mine which helps. I've always wanted the famed mxr analog chorus and after this I still do but I really liked the boss, stereo chorus, and the Julia. I'd be happy with any of them. Currently the only cheap pedal I own is my Nux chorus which is probably a boss copy but it gets the job done. Actually I also have another less expensive pedal a Moore triangle buff fuzz pedal which was about $55 so it's the next cheapest pedal on my board but it sounds great. The triangle buff which is a real (not simulated) copy of the triangle muff really surprised me. It sounds great and I definently recommend it if you need a fuzz on a budget. I get way better tones out of it than any video I've seen on KZfaq and it's way more versatile than I thought it would be. The only cons being, since it's a micro pedal which is great if like me you have a ton of pedals and always have to leave some out or daisy chain multiple pedals in one hub of your power brick but since it's a micro pedal the tone an volume are PCB mounted. Although it's very common with that type of pedal it's still a con but the rest of the pedal is very solid in an all metal enclosure. The only other con is the volume, there is plenty volume with on tap but the volume has to be about 3/4 or a little less for unity volume but like I said there is plenty volume if you want it. And I should also mention the triangle muff it is copying also has the same volume dynamic although slightly less pronounced. But even with those two caveats the Mooer Triangle Buff is certainly worth $40-$60. I had planned on using it temporarily until I could afford to spend money for a real triangle muff or an op amp reissue muff (I like both but the triangle is my favorite) but after using it awhile I've decided my money would best be spent on other things as the triangle buff with or without a boost from a ts9 tube screamer gets my all the fuzz tones I really need. I can also use my proco rat 2 if I want a little more mid heavy fuzz tone. But I should mention that the triangle muffs have less mids which is a huge part of their tonal identity so if you need them to fit into a mix an cut better boosting it with a mids heavy pedal like the TS9 tube screamer works incredibly. It adds in mids but doesnt really change the origional tone, just gives it more ability to be heard in the mix.

Absolutely, you can operate it with the foot and the depth is adapted automatically. It is true it boosts the signal and you need to be careful with input level. However it really sounds different from the Boss. (I'd say MicroChorus is more like EnterSandMan chorus.) Also the micro chorus, I think, has a nice sinus LFO, whereas the blue MXR seemed to have a triangular LFO which bothered me. The MRX stereo is more specialised for stereo but I keep changing all the settings. As soon as you change one knob you need to change the others. I should check the Boss Dimension C and the CH1.

I finally figured out how to true bypass the mxr m234 (modern surface mount version). It's not at all easy like a normal true bypass mod. I love buffered bypass pedals when they are done right. But the mxr always sucked tone even in bypass, it no longer sucks tone at all as a true bypass pedal. I've also owned the stonefish (shortest amount of time I've had any pedal ever). I noticed the same issue of it changing the tone in a way that made everything sound too full/dark(sounded bad with extended range guitars and humbuckers, only liked it with singles). If there was a better way to dial that syranfe eq effect out into a more typical chorus tone i would have liked the stonefish much better. I've been building pedals for years and ive been through a lot of chorus pedals. At this point I think I'm just going to build a ce2 clone with buffered and true bypass options and a vibrato (kill dry) type mode. The mxr isn't bad (once you fix the buffer sucking tone by true bypassing and I'm only the 2nd person I know of whos ever pulled off true bypassing it) but the boss is still superior. The high and low cut knobs are just that btw, cuts. They don't boost, they are completly passive controls that only take away highs or lows respectively. The reason the m234 is such a pain to true bypass is that your working around tiny and packages and the slightest slip of the iron can and will remove a cap or resistor etc. and putting them back without a rework station is a p.i.t.a. And the 3pdt switch won't fit until you still a new hole over the lettering below the stock dpdt switch hole. You don't need a 4pdt like everyone says cause the led operates on Millineum Bypass so it still functions normally after the mod. I also didn't have any pop at first but I went back in to hot glue the new wires on the cob for tension relief and the coupling capacitor that went from input hot to ground lifted from the hot glue heat and I don't have any spare 10uf caps (other than electrolytics) right now but as long as you don't make that mistake there won't be switch pop. Also they use shitty lead free solder on the board to be rohs compliant probably so removing the input and output jacks long enough to clip the tip leg and reinstall is a nightmare. Once I finally figured out where main input and output, pcb in an pcb out, fx signal and signal ground were all located then knowing what needed to go where was the easy part (and compared to most true bypass mods that part was actually a pain on the was as well). But now it functions as before but will still pass signal with no power and doesn't suck highs/level when in bypass. If anyone is interested in doing this mod just message me and I'll get you the link to the info that finally made it possible for me to figure it out(do not attempt unless your good with a soldering iron and you have a good variable temp solder station with a solder pump and desoldering braid plus knowledge of how to trace pcb's in case you need to trouble shoot). I had to troubleshoot cause the ribbon wore at the top of the pedal is very flimsy and thin and two of its wore separated from the board after I had been working on the underside of the PCB which meant bending the ribbon back and forth a few times. It wasn't a difficult fix but again it was a pain in the ass. And a perfe t example why I don't like SMD pedals. Builders want you to believe they are just as good which is bullshit. Even with a good rework station modding and repairing SMD pedals is much more time consuming and difficult than through hole pedals/boards. Plus the smaller SMD components are delicate and no where near as durable as through hole components. Plus I just like the feel of being able to hold each through hole components on my hand and easily trace the path of pcb's by following the components which again is possible with SMD but takes so much more concentration. SMD boards are just another way that manufacturers can save a buck and take the control of modding/fixing the device away from the consumer. I have every intention of continuing to work on SMD pedals and get better at working with SMD components but I'll always choose through hole over SMD whenever possible.

I have the mxr 234, and I can say that it was used wrong. His low and high controls work as a low pass and high pass filter, so his flat would be at 10 and not like it is in the video, this changes a lot in the final sound. The same with the volume knob, its flat would be at 10, so the other pedals that do not have a volume knob are at maximum volume, that is, at 10

I think you did a great job comparing. If I had the time (and I don’t), i think ALL pedal reviews would be 1000% better, if the reviewer: A. Played chords and single notes B. Played a Marshall a Fender and a VOX C. Played clean and dirty. The truth about pedals is technique, amp, single coils vs humbuckers makes a whole lotta difference

I agree. I absolutely fucking hate it when they set a loop and turn knobs. Stop making loops, they sound awful with pedals and get repetitive very quickly. A good pedal review does exactly what you said and plays through the pedals as any normal person would. Nobody buys a brand new pedal and hooks up a compressed digital loop to them to test how they sound. Give it some life and breath not a soulless loop! Sorry for the rant but I have never seen a good pedal review involving a loop pedal. Always constant knob turning with no explanation.

The MXR Micro might have the most noise and noisy switch but it seems to sound the nicest.

Nice Comparison. I Love Chorus. In this Video the Boss Waza and the Julia were the Best Sounding. MXR Micro Sounded good (huge volume bump when engaged) = dealbreaker for me. MXR analog chorus (very weak). I also Love the: Analogman Bi-Chorus, The Tortuga Martini, The Boss Waza Dimension C, and #1 The Free the Tone Tri-Avatar (is what Im using = phenomenal) also the Shiva Little Wave for that 80's Rack Chorus.

Great shootout mate. I wish you could compare the Analogman Mini Chorus (with mix knob) and the CMATMODS Analog Chorus with couple of these pedals as well. Those two pedals are the ones I'm really excited about. Cheers!

I’ve had the micro chorus for about 10 years now. Always thought there was something about it that didn’t sit quite right. I really loved the wax’s-craft pedal but they’re over $300+tax here in Canada and not much saving on the used market. Have you tried a JHS emperor?

No I haven't. How much is the Stereo Chorus in Canada?
@petebrown8145
@petebrown8145 2 жыл бұрын
@@MadebyMiike Almost as much as the Waza Craft and they are in short supply here. I only found 1 in Canada and it’s about 6000km from here. I really only need mono for my rig but like the stereo option for recording. I tried the Analog Chorus but it’s also missing something (but not as much as the micro)

Were you disappointed that some pedals had to have their volume cranked. I haven't found one that will keep pace with my other pedals. Do I really need to decrease the levels on the other pedals? Thanks.

Well, the volume controls on these things are FX controls really (dry/wet). Some of These pedals bosst your signal a bit (like the MXR Micro Chorus). Thanks for watching - Mike
